    A unexcepted movie

I walked into The Hobbit IMAX 3D with high hopes that the movie would be as good as the book. this is nothing like the book at all. The IMAX was not worth the money(only filling half the huge screen for the entire 3 hours). The 3D was good but not mind bending. They skip every stop that was made in the book and put in new bad guys that sound like their in Eragon. A little disapointment on my part and if you must see the Hobbit, find a cheap $5 2D showtime.

    Over the top artistic license

It is expected for A movie director or producer to take a little artistic license when converting a book to a movie, but this one went over the top. The book "The Hobbit" is a classic. If it is necessary to Change the story and add characters to make it interesting, then maybe a more talented director is needed. This movie is just one long chase and battle scene with the orks. Got to be rather boring after a while. The beek is a great read and I will reread to refresh myself with what really happened, but would not reecommend the mopvie for anyone wanting to see the book played out. Great if you like 3D effects and don;t care about story line. Very Very disappointing.

a good but not great movie

    by Kilgi

This is a movie that I was looking forward to for months! Unfortunately unlike the fellowship the first movie of the lord of the rings trilogy this movie feels forced and the dialogue stiff. That being said there is enough going on to satisfy Rings fans until the next film and that will definitely pick up the pace!

    Great Movie

There are a few deviations from the book but I went in expecting that. Purists will be dissapointed but the changes do not detract from the story and make the move more enjoyable. There a a couple of places that drag on a bit long but overall for a nearly three hour movie it seemed much shorter. The 3D was amazingly done, so much so that I heard some folks complaining that they didn't notice the 3D. I also initially was unaware of the 3D until I started looking for the depth of field and found it to be incredible. There are a few of the gimmiky in your face effects but the real beauty of the 3D in my opinion was the movie stretched from right in front of you for seemingly miles. Can not wait for the next installment!

    Good movie,decent adaptation

    by dagahss

I'm a big Tolkien fan and have read most of his books. From a movie fan perspective it was pretty good, the casting, landscapes, effects, the visuals were astonishing as with the LOTR movies. Although the I felt they overused the slapstick humor for example: the three trolls feel like the three stooges... one of them even had Curly's voice and the Gobling king, come on... and let's not get started with Radagast. So, there are some loose, but forgivable, parts However as a book adaptation I felt it could have been a lot better, like, including Radagast and the white orc... completely made up. Besides that the subtle changes they made here and there... the problem is that, in the book, Tolkien makes such a good job describing the characters, their personalities... that you know how they're supposed to look and they don't.

Anyway, if you can forgive those (not so) little creative liberties of an adaptation, it is still a good movie, a must for fans of Tolkien.

Digital Effects don't make good cinema

After the LOTR trilogy this movie was a serious failure. I went to it with great expectations, but the only thing good about it was the high quality graphics employed. The story was worse than lame. The first hour of the movie is complete garbage. For the first time I fell asleep in a movie. I am extremely dissatisfied. This is nothing but a fairy tale for children.

    Hobbilt- 4 & 1/2 out of 5 stars

Other than being a bit too heavy on battle scenes, this is a terrific adaptation of The Hobbit which expands the story in interesting ways. The eagle rescue makes the 3-D definitely worth the extra $ one pays for this. Excellent casting.

Ignore the critics! Epic awesome movie

    by

Honestly I loved this movie more then the first LOR movie. Of course the later two were better.

Beautifully done. Great in IMAX and with 3D. Will watch it again with the HFR 3D.

Peter Jackson's love for Middle Earth is Apparent once again.

    by

The first Hobbit installment was great. Richard Armitage was an amazing Thorin, and Martin Freeman had the hesitant but brave Bilbo pinned to perfection. The effects were pure art. Jackson knew just where to bring added depth and history to the characters and story line. It is obvious just how much love Jackson has for Tolkien's works in his movies. I read an initial review when the movie came out, that accused the 48 frame per second filming of being disorienting and nauseating, but I found that to be completely untrue. And, this is coming from someone who gets car sick if I sit in the back seat for too long!) My fellow movie goers and I all agreed that it was crisp and super realistic. My boyfriend, who is from West Africa and had never seen an Imax movie, leaned over during the stone giant scene on the cliffs of the moutain and said, "my legs are hanging over the edge." It is safe to say it was very much worth the 13 bucks a ticket I paid.

    Return to Middle Earth

    by mjbare

I know some people are compairing this movie with the Lord of the Rings Trilogy but that's the worst thing anyone can do. Each story should be taken and judged on its own merrit. You'll love this movie and the way Peter Jackson tied everything to the Fellowship of the Rings with the begging of this film. Rich scenes as well as sets. It'll take a little bit to get used to Bilbo but it was the same way with Frodo too. Of course, it was only just and right to see Ian McKellan back as Gandalf!

    FREAKING AWESOME.

SOOOOOOOO good to be back in Middle-Earth again! Martin Campbell does an incredible job as Bilbo. I wouldn't recommend the HFR (High Frame Rate) version as it's very dizzying and doesn't have the 24fps cinematic feel to it. Looks like you're watching a ginormous TV when you're watching a HFR version. We watched it a second time, this time in Imax 3D and it was much more cinematic and less nauseating. Overall, way to go, Peter Jackson!

If you liked the LOTG Trilogy, You'll enjoy this.

Not too long, not too short, just right... I like the fact that they split the story up into two movies because pushing it all into one wouldn't have done it proper justice (see: Avatar, The Last Airbender for example of too much story pushed into one movie).

Peter Jackson does it again adding to the expansive and beautiful world that is Middle Earth. Plus there's an added treat if you see it in IMAX. It's definitely a Go for IMAX 3D. I caught myself at times looking away from the focal points of the movie at the scenic landscapes and natural beauty of New Zealand just because it was captured so well.

a new high in movie making . . . the technology in this movie is incredible. Didn't think I would like it but it blew me away . . . Everyone needs to see this in the Imax #D.

    Worth the Anticipation

    by

I've read the entire Middle-earth series numerous times, and honestly in my opinion, The Hobbit was the weakest one story wise. With the film(s), they flesh out more of Tolkien's intentions and imagination better than ever. For those of you expecting perfect and exact novel storylines, just stick with the books. They are wonderful as they are, and so are their film counterparts. Tolkien's writing is not for everyone, and the film medium makes him much more accessible.
The Hobbit is extremely well-made, the primary characters (Gandalf, Thorin, and Bilbo) are immensely lovable, but none of the characters fail to amaze!
Go see it, and find out for yourself!!!
