A 3-hour Commercialized Children's Movie? Come on Jackson! Epic Fail!

    by

A 3-hour Commercialized Children's Movie with so much filler, it feels like eating a rotten dwarf-filled twinkie. Wayyyyyyyyyyyyy too many near misses with dwarfs being crushed, burned, drowned, and beaten to a pulp without actually being crushed, burned, drowned, or even slightly bruised. Simply not believable AT ALL! Peter Jackson might as well have had Coke, Pepsi, and KFC product placement with this overdone 3-movie wannabe LOTR trilogy. Most epic fail EVER!!!!! I have never been so disappointed in a move in my live :(.........

    Another masterpiece

    by

Peter Jackson picks up his talented storytelling right where he left off in The Lord of the Rings trilogy with an equally captivating tale. A beautiful start to an inspiring story that the whole family can enjoy. Very much anticipating the release of the second and third installments and I cannot wait to see our lowly hero go face-to-face with the fearsome Smaug.

Great Moments and Acting + Way Too Many Pre-Battle Staredowns= An Overall Good Time

I'll keep it short. It's a good time. The best parts of the movie (for me) are easily any moment with Bilbo (Martin Freeman) in them. They do an excellent job of not rushing the scenes. The stuff they add in from the other texts works fine. It is however very disappointing when you see the junk they simply made up. There is more dismemberment shown in The Hobbit than in Lord of the Rings and sometimes they make it a little silly/irreverent. It attempts to be dramatic too much to a level where you begin to feel insulted. For example, there are way too many pre-battle staredowns near the end. It's still a very fun movie and is definitely worth seeing.

    Entertaining movie

If you were a fan of the Lord of the Rings trilogy this is certainly a must see. We went to go see the movie in 3D and it was fantastic. Like every movie, there were a few scenes that dragged on too long, but over all a very entertaining movie. A must see.

    Great Movie

Peter Jackson's legacy continues. Only thing is, I wouldn't recommend watching it in 3D but definitely watch it in IMAX. 3D makes it hard to focus.

    The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey

I loved the movie. For Tolkien fans, the longer it has been since you read the book the better. You need to not spend the time watching going, "this wasn't in the book" or "that isn't how it went". Jackson never sticks right to the book so deal with it. Just forget how the book went and enjoy the movie. The book was great and the movie is great. Just don't try to compare the two.

Ignore the critics! Epic awesome movie

    by

Honestly I loved this movie more then the first LOR movie. Of course the later two were better.

Beautifully done. Great in IMAX and with 3D. Will watch it again with the HFR 3D.

Who says you can't go home...

For a decade we have revisited our initial moments with the Shire folk and all the adventures brought to us by "Lord of the Rings". The feeling that it might not feel the same or will we recognize the place, are immediately dispensed of in this first offering of "The Hobbit".

The tale is shared wonderfully as if we never left and Bilbo, Frodo & Gandalf usher us in to the past with a generous portion of nostalgic moments as well as a hint of things to come.

The story is told wonderfully and the new characters (Dwarfs) are both fascinating and fun. Truly this is a wonderful ride of adventure and fitting in pieces of the puzzle from a decade ago.

You'll laugh, you'll cry, and you'll definitely want more....So, see many times to catch all the multi-faceted aspects that are definitely going to be missed after only one or two go rounds.

And once you've done...ache for part 2...because that is what happens when one has to leave the shire;)

    This Movie is Too Long

I'm a fan of the Lord of the Ring series, but even I couldn't believe how long the movie took to introduce characters and travel to certain locations. There were just obvious parts of the movie that could have been cut without sacrificing any part of the story. To think this three hour movie is just the first in a series of three! If it takes nine hours to watch the whole trilogy, I think it might take less time to actually just read the book! Although it was nice to see one of my favorite books from childhood on the screen, the length of the movie made it difficult to enjoy.

    Everything I hoped

    by rudsaki

The scenery, the sound, the amazing above and below ground cities, the camaraderie of a group working for a larger purpose, and the background knowledge gained for what is to come. All amazing.

Wow they put a lot of work into this movie!

    by DJ Dan

Went to the 3D Imax experience for this movie. Totally worth it. The quality was astounding and picture was perfect. Plot was good, not super easy to follow but makes you want to see it again to catch everything. The scenery is amazing. Animation was great, even when I focused on the movement of the creatures, etc. Pay the extra money for the best theater you can go to for this one. Age group for this movie is probably at least teenager and up; it's a bit too violent/complicated for young children.

Extravagant, exciting and completely destroys the spirit of the story

    by

After creating such a spectacular movie while remaining true to the story and spirit of LOTR, I am so incredibly disappointed with the travesty this movie has has made of The Hobbit.

If you have never read the book or if you only care about the fantastic fight scenes and breathtaking cinematography, then this movie will just be the prequel to the LOTR that you hoped it would be. Go see it in IMAX 3D or whatever they best quality theater you can. It is worth the ticket price to see.

For those of us who have loved this story since childhood, it is heartbreaking to know that Peter Jackson has sold out the Tolkien story just to show off his CGI "talent" and make as much money as possible.

Unless you must critique EVERY little thing, see this movie!

While not the near flawless experiment that Lord of the Ring was the first part of the hobbit is the best thing I've seen all year. Fans will have to definitely adjust their expectations as fans of the book might be upset at new, darker additions, and fans of the LOTR movies might find the lighter tone and additional comedy not to their liking. Though taking things with a grain of salt may not be ideal I feel than many will be sucked back into middle earth.

Many of the moments in the film are simply fantastic, even by the standards set by the previous trilogy. The acting is definitely on par and the film had a heart even can be quite chaotic at times. The special effect are very different after ten years, but it very much fits the story the filmmakers are trying to tell. The only problems come from some conflicting tone. Especially in the beginning is seems like the grand apocalyptic story of LOTR is fighting the simple, light story
of The Hobbit. I think these films will endure.

    Another Peter Jackson Epic

    by

Peter Jackson has done it again. It was great to go back to Middle Earth. The movie was pieced perfectly together and was not a disappointment. The anticipation and hype was well worth the wait. Go and see it and be reminded why you first fell in love with hobbits, dwarves, and elves...Gollum as well!!
