    The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey

I enjoyed the movie very much. The book was written for Tolkien's son, a child at the time. As such, direct translation to the screen would have left the viewers with many unanswered questions.

The only negative I noticed was this: In "the Two Towers", Aragorn tells Eowyn that dwarf women have beards; however, dwarf women in the movie are shown beardless. A minor point perhaps.

    GREEDY

    by

The movie was entertaining and exciteing in 3D/IMAX ecspecially, but STICK TO THE BOOK , what an act of greed i could see 2 movies possible but a over 300 page book 3 movies. its also predictable its basically going to be the lord of the rings till they get to the end with the dragon its like cmon, and obviously they will be fighting orks and trolls and whomever along the way. the Hobbit is a different story than the Lord of the RIngs in many ways and it was just taken to far for the Hobbit. make it one movie or 2 at the most otherwise to me its just greed lord of the rings went to His head. I regret i bought into it really, but, if you dont really care about that and you love the excitement and the fantasy of the other worlds and the battles of lord of the rings than you should see it in the movies because the sound and scenery and the excitement is all there and in IMAX its even better in my opinion. i enjoyed it from that perspective, but, was dissapointed of the stray from the book

Digital Effects don't make good cinema

After the LOTR trilogy this movie was a serious failure. I went to it with great expectations, but the only thing good about it was the high quality graphics employed. The story was worse than lame. The first hour of the movie is complete garbage. For the first time I fell asleep in a movie. I am extremely dissatisfied. This is nothing but a fairy tale for children.

    Everything I hoped

    by rudsaki

The scenery, the sound, the amazing above and below ground cities, the camaraderie of a group working for a larger purpose, and the background knowledge gained for what is to come. All amazing.

Most of the critics have it backwards.

    by

It seems to me that the problem most critics have with this film is the pacing. They didn't like that there is a lot of time spent introducing characters and fleshing out the story. I thought those were the best parts. The movie included quite a bit that wasn't in the Hobbit but was taken from other Tolkien works. I think it makes the story better and gives it more scope. The parts that lost me were the battles. They are just so CGI heavy and unrealistic that my brain would just turn off until the battles stop and the plot starts up again.

Peter Jackson recaptures the feel of LOTR perfectly. I thought it was a solid and entertaining movie. The humor worked, the acting performances were great and it was really pretty to look at. The 3D even worked and I normally hate 3D. Definitely worth watching on the big screen.

    good for children, i suppose

I found The Hobbit to be way overdone, at least for adult consumption. between the direction, the script, the acting and the score, we're hit repeatedly over the head with things that a subtler approach would convey more effectively. when Thorin yells, "out of the frying pan," do we *really* require Gandalf to complete the cliché in order for us get the reference? (and does a wizard of the stature of Gandalf really have nothing better to do while in full flight from a pack of bloodthirsty orcs, or goblins, or whatever those things were?)

the movie also often challenged (and handily defeated) my powers of suspension of disbelief.

I did get a big kick out of the Rock-'Em-Sock-'Em Robots though.

    Worth the Anticipation

    by

I've read the entire Middle-earth series numerous times, and honestly in my opinion, The Hobbit was the weakest one story wise. With the film(s), they flesh out more of Tolkien's intentions and imagination better than ever. For those of you expecting perfect and exact novel storylines, just stick with the books. They are wonderful as they are, and so are their film counterparts. Tolkien's writing is not for everyone, and the film medium makes him much more accessible.
The Hobbit is extremely well-made, the primary characters (Gandalf, Thorin, and Bilbo) are immensely lovable, but none of the characters fail to amaze!
Go see it, and find out for yourself!!!

    Superb and Exciting!!

    by

This was a fabulous movie, that I would recommend to any LOTR fan. The story line was great, and all the characters are wonderful! I will be buying this on BluRay! Super excited for the following installments!

    Good to be back

    by

The Hobbit was a journey back to Middle Earth that doesn't disappoint. I very much enjoyed the trip however the IMAX digital projectors they have these days just don't do this movie justice. Bright areas are washed out and everything is dark. A home theater may just be a better experience than spending the same amount to see it as you would to buy the blueray.

    Enjoyable

I read the book long ago, so I don't know if the adaptation is faithful or not, but it is a fun movie, well acted and well made. Also, this was my first experience with IMAX 3D, and count me as a convert: the effects are magical.

    The Hobbit

    by

Amazing movie. Saw it in IMAX 3D last night/this morning. Read how some people thought it didn't look great with the fast frame rate. I was so enthralled I never noticed anything but perfection. It is faithful to the soul of the book and the acting and characters are outstanding. I will be seeing it many more times before it leaves theaters! Thank you Peter Jackson for transporting me back to my most favorite place in the world.
Scary for kids younger than 10ish. Depends on the child I guess. The end made me and my 14 year old daughter cry...in a good way.

    The Hobbit

I was very disappointed in the movie. I loved the Lord of the Rings because it followed the book. Much of the dialouge was taken directly from the text. Not so with the Hobbit. It did not follow the story line at all. I cannot believe that I watched a 3 hour movie and it only took me about a third of the way through the book. I saw this in an imax setting with 3D because I was so looking forward to seeing the dragon and the spiders in Mirkwood coming off a big screen, but alas! All of these are in future productions. I bet that Tolkien is rolling over in his grave!

It is very clear that the writers, producers and directors are just interested in making money and not creating a product that follows the fan base of the book.

Save your cash and don't go.

    Good, but didn't meet expectations

    by aquatad

I enjoyed the movie, and it didn't feel as long as it is (about 3 hours). However I felt a bit underwhelmed, probably because I was expecting the caliber of the Lord of the Rings Trilogy, in terms of the pace of the story and the way the characters developed. The scenery was phenomenal though, especially watching it on an IMAX screen in 3D. Overall I'm glad I saw it in a movie theater, but it didn't wow me like the other three LOTR movies did.

    Good story and FX

I truly enjoyed Peter Jackson's incredible "screen presence" of the characters and the story. The 3D was used artfully and practically. It truly brought depth to the picture like 3D is supposed to be used.

I highly recommend seeing this movie, especially with the family.

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey-IMAX 3d

    by wpelk

I rate movies 0-10 (10 being the best). I'm a pretty tough critic, I rarely give movies a 10. So I give The Hobbit a solid 8 It was really good in 3D and had some good effects, but some of the movie felt like it was part of a video game and then the lighting in some parts was like LED lights, you know, that bright white light. So I gave it an 8 because of the acting and the story. I don't think I'll see the next one in 3D.
