    Highly recommended

    by

As a keen fan of the Lords of the Ring trilogy, I was looking forward to The Hobbit. And it does not disappoint. The scale and building up of the characters, where some are familiar and others new from LOTRs is in a similar style or what is the start of an epic journey,

Only point to mention is that for young kids, it may be a slow moving and at well over two hours is not exactly a short movie!

    Disappointing

Was a huge fan of all LOTR films, I'd rate them 10 out of 10. This is a 2 out of 10. Very, very slow; no character development; limited plot. The good: 3D effects are fun, as was seeing Rivendell and the Shire again. But that was only worth 2 points. Jackson shouldn't have turned this short book into three long movies...the material is not nearly as meaty as LOTR, and way shorter. This was a crushing disappointment.

    Amazing

    by

PJ hasn't lost a step since LOTR this new trilogy starts off with old familiar faces making us remember why we have loved this adaption of Tolkiens classic so much. It than introduces us to Bilbo's past and his incredible journey that introduces him to the one ring. All I can say is that I was totally enthralled with this movie and it made me feel like a little boy again anything that can do that for a few hours has my total approval!!! Yes PJ adds some material that wasn't in the book but it doesn't distract from the story at all. Excellent adaption that I can't wait to see again!!!!!

    by

This movie was awesome!! The storyline was good, you fell in love with the charcters and the action scenes were fantastic!!! Planning on seeing this movie at least 2 more times!!
I loved it in IMAX but could have done without the 3D aspect of it. Seemed blurry at times....

    Over the top artistic license

It is expected for A movie director or producer to take a little artistic license when converting a book to a movie, but this one went over the top. The book "The Hobbit" is a classic. If it is necessary to Change the story and add characters to make it interesting, then maybe a more talented director is needed. This movie is just one long chase and battle scene with the orks. Got to be rather boring after a while. The beek is a great read and I will reread to refresh myself with what really happened, but would not reecommend the mopvie for anyone wanting to see the book played out. Great if you like 3D effects and don;t care about story line. Very Very disappointing.

Great addition to the Lord of the Rings Universe, If you liked the Lord of the rings Trilogy, then you'll love this first of three in the Hobbit Series :)

The first 45 are a little boring but...

    Hobbit: An Expected Thrill

Peter Jackson has done it again. I hated waiting so long for this movie after the Rings Trilogy but the wait was worth it. This is every bit a good and complex as the previous three. The casting is perfect. I am anxiously awaiting the next two installments.

    The hobbit - IMax 3D

Over all a good movie...great visuals, decent soundtrack, good 3-d effects (but not as stunning as "Avatar"-viewed in the same theater)...Story line is embellished (amazing to get ~3 hrs out of the first third of the Hobbit book)...The movie seemed overly dark and long...more a Lord of the rings prequel, than a happy go lucky, stand alone, Children's story. Particular complaints were the volume level was blasting @ AMC Emeryville, CA (louder than a heavy metal rock concert !), seats not too comfy, and temp 75 +...obviously these issues could be resolved if I had viewed it at a different theater ! Will I see it again ? at home on blue ray 3d , perhaps....Will I go to see the other 2 Hobbit movies ? Unlikely at this theater..maybe at home...The visual images were wonderful on large screen 3-d IMAX, but $ 17.50/ ticket (incl fandango charge) was a lot to see this movie, at this venue, with the issues I described...I was definitely squirming in my seat by it's ending !

    Good Movie but

Saw it in IMAX 3D. The movie seemed really blurry. If you did get a good picture it would disappear almost immeditaly. Good luck moving your head at all because it'll go blurry. Don't see in 3D, if you really want to enjoy the movie

    WOW

    by kakzhit

the best 3d i've ever experienced. Also, as tolkien's fan, was suprisingly content with all plot chganges, and they were slight. I now believe that Peter jackson loves tolkien's world even more then i do. My heart was touched, my senses were brought to life. I have to add, that almost everybody in the thatre sat with their mouths open, nobody spoke, nobody texed on cellphones, nobody ate popcorn that much. I'm going again in a few weeks ))))

    Masterpiece!

    by

So, this review is for the IMAX 3D version of the film. I saw the midnight release in 2D and i really enjoyed the movie. Start to finish it will capture your attention and take you on a journey. There are some liberties that fill in some unanswered gaps in the original text of the book....however for the most part they are wins in my opinion and added great flavor to the story. I won't say any specifics because I would not want to ruin someone's first time experience...but needless to say I went to see it again today in IMAX 3D. It blew my mind how flawlessly the 3D flowed. I have always been VERY skeptical of 3d films, and the old ones would give me awful headaches. Peter Jackson hit a home run w/this and I picked up every last detail that I missed the first go around. It is very rare to see a movie of this caliber and I would strongly recommend ANY big fan to see it in IMAX 3D even if you've already seen it in 2D. There are scenes so magnificent that I had tears flowing..

Wonderful, Engaging Addition to the Series

    by daduwa

I wasn't the least bit disappointed in this movie ... visually stunning and wholly engaging. The 3-D was MOSTLY wonderful (some minor issues that could have more to do with my poor vision than the film) and it's definitley worth the extra money to see it on an IMAX screen. I never cease to be amazed by Ian McKellan's ability to become the character he's portraying.

Giant Birds Must Charge By The Hour

Well-made and EGREGIOUSLY padded. Saw this in IMAX 3D (not HFR), and it looked real pretty. Jackson harvested from appendices to fatten this book into a trilogy. Movie 1 is pretty (in 24 fps, at least), though it RUNS long. I was struggling somewhere in the middle. And toward the end. There are some amazing sights and it ends strongly enough... but, IMHO, THE HOBBIT should have been two movies at most. That said, I've read The Hobbit and the LOTR books, and I've *liked* them but I've not made a religion of them. In some ways, Martin Freeman makes a more interesting/engaging protagonist than Elijah Wood. Still, caveat emptor. While I'm here, DISHONORED is a pretty fun videogame. Hello, Hi, How are you?

Cool and worth it, looking forward to next two films

    by JJBarr

Cool opening, not just a jump into it. Fans of the LOTR trilogy will love the opening. They really want these three new films to mesh with the LOTR trilogy. Story was clear and consistent, like the LOTR, you do have that feeling of the book come to life, you feel and laugh and worry about the characters. It's great seeing Gandalf the Grey back - he's so sneaky. GO GO GO.

Not quite there and back again.

    by

For Tolkien fans, this movie is wonderful. With dialogue straight from the book, scenes from the appendices, and allusions to the Lord of the Rings; the movie is brimming with nods to Tolkien fans.

However, if someone did not know the story line, it could be an incredibly confusing adventure that abruptly ends on a mountain peak.
