    See it IMAX 3D

Visually Stunning and well put together telling of JRR Tolkien's The Hobbit. See it in IMAX 3D if you can. The 7 minute preview and 2 minute teaser of Star Trek Into Darkness is well worth the extra cash.

Stop what you're doing right now! Go to this movie!

    by hpme

So, the movie starts... I laugh many times, I cringe a few times, I get worried for characters many times, I remember parts of the LotR movies at various points, and then the credits start! I was completely involved from start to finish. I did not know I had been sitting for >2.5hours until I looked at my watch after the credits began. What more can you ask from a movie?
So, it's not Tolkien's The Hobbit. It's Peter Jackson's The Hobbit. Unlike the LotR, I was prepared to ignore (as much as possible) any and all changes. Not possible - Azog chasing after Thorin? Sheesh!) - but I was not allowing that to impact my enjoyment of the movie (also unlike LotR).
Casting, sets, art work, acting (mostly... Elrond is a bit better in this. Gandalf is, unfortunately, a bit "rehearsed"), interpretation of many of Tolkien's thoughts, all great!
Just a fantastic piece of work!

    Great movie!

I just saw the Hobit: An Unexpected Journey, and i was as expected, blown away. Peter Jackson is incredibly adept at taking viewers right into Middle Earth universe he so magically created in the LOTR trilogy. For those that have read the books, he does delve off a little bit, but he sticks largely to the script. I also saw in IMAX 3D, amazing. I will definitely be going again.

If you love LOTR you'll love this movie

    by

I'm not sure of it, but I love the development of Bilbo in this move. Also it's starts off very slow but then it's just action packed after that. it's has small subtle clues leading to LOTR. The Golum part of the movie stole the show.

    No more 3D for me

    by b_k

The Hobbit is a great movie. If you like the LOTR trilogy then the Hobbit delivers exactly what you want - another 2:40 immersed in Middle Earth with all your favorite sets, characters, and story lines. Like LOTR itself, The Hobbit is not told in the same order as the book is read, but is ordered more chronologically for the bigger picture. Unlike LOTR, The Hobbit goes beyond the story, stretching it a bit and maybe even changing it. Maybe this was more for the producers who want three more full-length films, but not bad if you're a true LOTR junky and will never get enough.

What I didn't appreciate was the 3D technology. The 3D doesn't add as much as the lack of quality takes away. I'd rather see my screens in focus, thank you. There were some scenes (like the tossing and cleaning of plates) that seemed designed entirely for the 3D affect, and this detracted from the story as well as the movie.

So I like the movie but see it in 2D!

    True to the book!

I really love J.R. Tolkeins works. I'm so happy that Peter Jackson has taken the time to do them right in a movie version. The hobbit I think was very true to the book and real readers this author's work should not be disappointed. However, a hit of a spoiler alert, they did break the movie into two parts though. That I did not expect. I felt like all of the characters were portrayed well by the actors and the special effects were quite good as well. Overall, this movie is a must-go for me.

    Good Movie but

Saw it in IMAX 3D. The movie seemed really blurry. If you did get a good picture it would disappear almost immeditaly. Good luck moving your head at all because it'll go blurry. Don't see in 3D, if you really want to enjoy the movie

    I need more

The Hobbit was excellent. I enjoyed this movie way more than I thought I would. When the movie was over, I wanted more. Not because it wasn't enough, but because I was wrapped up in the story.

Not a must see but you kinda have to.

It was good but not great. I think it was a bit dragged out as they are trying to get three movies out of it. Most of the fight scenes felt like the same thing after a while. You do kinda have to see it though as the next two will build up to the ending.

WHAT DOES IT HAS IN IT'S POCKETSES?

saw the IMAX version. a little slow for the first 1/3 of the movie. Jackson brought back a few familiar faces, and added a few items not in the original story. necessary for those who saw the LOTR trilogy, but didn't read the book ( Hobbit). effects were great. ashamed to admit it's been a while since i read "the hobbit". so i temporarily forgot a few characters, and story lines. gollum stole the show. was nice to see a happier version of the "Bi-polar kid", and the riddle scene was awesome, and left mostly intact. definitely a lot less depressing than LOTR, as this is a child's story. although the battle scenes are just as gruesome. bonus 9 minute preview of the Star trek movie. that looks real good. almost three hours long, it was a long trip to the end of the movie. first part ends right about where it should in the story, using the three movie formula. disappointing it is going to take three years to see the finished product. go see this on the big screen, and take your kids.

A Lovely Adventure That Leaps Past Second Breakfast and Elevensies

    by kmowll

My three kids are all in their late twenties now and living in different states across from coast to coast. Nevertheless, they each want to experience The Hobbit with me since I read it to them aloud, one at a time, when they were young. And the conjuring of images at that young age is not disappointed when presented with Peter Jackson's representations on the 3-D IMAX screen. Indeed, it is a thrilling and reaffirming experience.

There are embellishments to the original that stay true enough that it is easy to accept these indulgences as a fulfillment of the whole. The animation enables the teller of the tale to reach the heights of what is a spell-binding and engrossing adventure.

This is not to be missed. It is long enough to make you miss your second breakfast and elevensies, but it is worth the grumbling of young tummies to treat the eyes, ears and furry little hobbit feet that tramp along with the grand adventure.

    Worth the Wait

I didn't realize that this was going to be shown in three installments at first. However, it was like seeing the book open up before my eyes in many ways and I am glad that it was decided to give this story more screen time as it is so rich with detail. It was simply an "alkariqua maara luu"!

    good for children, i suppose

I found The Hobbit to be way overdone, at least for adult consumption. between the direction, the script, the acting and the score, we're hit repeatedly over the head with things that a subtler approach would convey more effectively. when Thorin yells, "out of the frying pan," do we *really* require Gandalf to complete the cliché in order for us get the reference? (and does a wizard of the stature of Gandalf really have nothing better to do while in full flight from a pack of bloodthirsty orcs, or goblins, or whatever those things were?)

the movie also often challenged (and handily defeated) my powers of suspension of disbelief.

I did get a big kick out of the Rock-'Em-Sock-'Em Robots though.

    Fans will enjoy!

If you are a Hobbit fan, go see it. My husband loved it in 3D. Me, I'm not a fan. The scenery was beautiful, as was the music. I didn't get the purpose of the journey until later in the very long 3 hour movie. I never understood why the hobbit was there. I really hate violence and there is a lot of it. In fact, if you cut out the senseless violence, the movie would have been about 45 minutes of actual story. I could have enjoyed it then. The 3D was good-not intrusive and it added to the enjoyment of the movie. I don't have an urge to see another sequel, however, my husband says there are 2 more books, so I guess I will be going with him when they come out, if they come out.
