Loved the movie, hated the 3-D

Anybody else getting tired of 3-D being shoe-horned in to movies? This movie would have been GREAT on the IMAX screen, but the 3-D detracted from the film tremendously. Note that I ssaw this on a "real" IMAX screen, not one of those converted multiplex IMAX jobs with a regular stadium seat theater & slightly larger than normal screen that many theaters pass off as IMAX.

I freely admit a lot of this is just me, but the 3-D only works when viewed "straight on". View it at an angle and you get a slight double image. This is where the problem of an IMAX screen comes in. It's so large I'd find myself turning my eyes to see something 'over there' on the big screen, then I'd get an fuzzy double image and I'd have to shift my head or body to adjust my viewing angle to make the double image go away.

This thing is we'll end up seeing this movie again in 2-D just so we can see it without the needless 3-D getting in the way.

    The Hobbit

Terrific movie! Engaging, gripping, heart-warming, exciting. Lays out important premises for The Lord of the Rings trilogy, esp. how evil is truly fought in the small kindnesses of people in fellowship and community. The 3D was sometimes hard to focus on in the IMAX, but thrilling.

    Simply Amazing

For what the movie is based around, a children's tale, it is a amazing movie with great special effects, characters, action and plot. If you are looking to see another Lord of the Rings, stop now, you won't find it. This movie is what Middle Earth was before Tolkien ever penned Lord of the Rings, and Jackson has created Tolkien's image perfectly. It is a simple adventure film, not one to save the world and smite ultimate evil, but an adventure film of finding the heart of oneself and through the thick and thin, finding where oneself belongs. You will laugh, you will cry, you will sit on the edge of your seat, if Lord of the Rings is a 10, this certainly gets a 9.

Peter Jackson's love for Middle Earth is Apparent once again.

    by

The first Hobbit installment was great. Richard Armitage was an amazing Thorin, and Martin Freeman had the hesitant but brave Bilbo pinned to perfection. The effects were pure art. Jackson knew just where to bring added depth and history to the characters and story line. It is obvious just how much love Jackson has for Tolkien's works in his movies. I read an initial review when the movie came out, that accused the 48 frame per second filming of being disorienting and nauseating, but I found that to be completely untrue. And, this is coming from someone who gets car sick if I sit in the back seat for too long!) My fellow movie goers and I all agreed that it was crisp and super realistic. My boyfriend, who is from West Africa and had never seen an Imax movie, leaned over during the stone giant scene on the cliffs of the moutain and said, "my legs are hanging over the edge." It is safe to say it was very much worth the 13 bucks a ticket I paid.

    Loved it.

    by kpenny

First 3D movie for me so I was amazed. Other 2 I went with had been to one before and they were impressed as much. Fits in well with the other Lord of the Rings moves you can make lots of connections that make it that much better. Still a great stand alone movie. Would go again.

    Technical Beauty

I thought the Hobbit did an excellent job keeping the audiences attention throughout the movie. The use of lots of new types of fantasy creatures was extremely fascinating. I loved the scene with the giants around the campfire. Absolutely hilarious!!

    Same old scenes

When the Movie started out - I was intrigued - Dragon Story....throughout the whole movie - never saw the Dragon until the end - a 5 sec shot from Jurassic Park - the Dragon Eye - .

The Story was very entertaining, great special effects. At times I felt like dejavu - same scenes from previous Lord of the Rings Movies.

All in all it was an ok Movie - I'm glad I didn't stand in line for the Premier..i would have been disappointed.

    Amazing!

Martin Freeman did an EXCELLENT job of channeling a hobbit. As an avid fan of the book, I was very pleased with the way the movie came out. Eagerly awaiting part 2 & 3!

    "The Hobbit"

    by Nixdad

This is a great start to the prequel to "The Lord of the Rings." We see some old familiar faces and a lot of new ones. The setting of Middle Earth via the terrain of New Zealand is once again breath taking. This is a must see if you are a fan of the LOTR.

    Hobbit

    by degn

Excellent cinema work, great sounds track and of course the visuals are outstanding. Now to the substance. A very slow start, but it was an introduction of the characters and it got cameos from LOTRs actors out of the way. Unfortunately this lasted like 1/2 and hour. Once done a great story unfolds and I will be looking forward to the next two movies. The Hobbit will be able to stand alone from LOTRs. This is a good thing. I see myself in 5yrs having a snowy or raining weekend of a hobbit/LOTRs marathon. Oh and the issues of getting a bothered stomach etc.. from the way the movie was shot was non existing for me. .Go an see.

The Hobbit, Impressive but not the best

My family and I have been long time fans of the Lord of The Ring series. We have read all the books and have saw all of the series on the first weekend of release-we love these stories. For me I didn't get the feeling of leaving the theater of, WOW, lets go back and watch it again. That was a really great movie. I was a good movie and maybe it was just that the Hobbits story wasn't as epic as the other stories. After seeing what a wonderful job Hollywood did with bringing the story to the big screen with the other movies and being such a big fan I expected more of the same. I know the Hobbits story is a more humble story but even his story can be told with the romance of a classic epic tale of lore and it just didn't deliver for me.
Now for my son's who are huge fans of high fantasy and the role play type stories and games, that appeal to that audience loved it. They felt that it hit the mark of all the characters being present for the story line.

    The Hobbit, an unexpected journey

Wonderful movie. Fastest 3 hours I ever spent watching a movie. Even my grandkids couldn't believe the movie was over. Great 3-D, wonderful characters, beautiful scenery, action-packed. Go see it in IMAX 3-D.

    A unexcepted movie

I walked into The Hobbit IMAX 3D with high hopes that the movie would be as good as the book. this is nothing like the book at all. The IMAX was not worth the money(only filling half the huge screen for the entire 3 hours). The 3D was good but not mind bending. They skip every stop that was made in the book and put in new bad guys that sound like their in Eragon. A little disapointment on my part and if you must see the Hobbit, find a cheap $5 2D showtime.

    Expectations not met

Let start by saying that it is a great movie and I throughly enjoyed it. It was my first IMAX 3D experience and caught myself ducking several times. Figuring that they are making 3 parts to the Hobbit, that the book would be followed at lot closer than it was. I feel they missed the mark on Thorin Oakenshield, he was not a young dwarf. I also think the animosity between dwarf and elf was overplayed. I do not why the pale orc on the white warg was thrown in. The goblin town was a work of art, but they should not have changed Bilbo's escape. I would liked to have seen the guard room scene. I do plan on seeing the movie several more times and buy each video when released plus buy the box set when it becomes available, as I did with LOTR.
