    Yikes

Sinister starts out as a by-the-numbers horror movie with the characters doing the typical things that stupid horror movie people do, and real life people do not (e.g., invesigating noises unarmed, skulking around their own houses without turning lights on). Ethan Hawke does a nice job as do the supporting characters. Everyone is believeable, and eventually the film breaks loose and gives some semi-unique twists and turns. Overall however, I did spend the majority of the movie in suspense and scared, and Sinister managed to do it without a bunch of unnecessary gore. These days, that is a success.

    Sinister

Liked the jump scares! Took my macho 13 year old to see it too... He liked it. He kept grabbing my arm... Even my mother liked it. Could have had a little more story development. I like a closed ending rather than an open one. They left it wide open!

    Definitely worth a ticket

I went into this movie hearing some pretty good things about it, and I wasn't disappointed. I'll admit a lot of its scares were jump scares, but the movie does a good job of setting up the proper atmosphere to make you feel suspense and dread. I'd especially recommend this to people who like horror films, but haven't seen the trailers for this one; a lot is, sadly, given away in the trailers, and yet I still managed to get creeped out by it. So if you haven't seen them, you'll get scared by it all the more.

    Totally Worth It.

I saw PA4 and Sinister back to back in the same night. I saw PA4 first, so as Sinister started, I was expecting things to start happening early. It took a while for my adrenaline to calm down as the story developed. But I was not disappointed. Sinister is scarier than PA4 because it can potentially happen in real life (not to discount a spirit realm). The idea of there being a voyer is terrifying in itself, and without giving away any plot details, the connection between the murders leaves you wondering about your own home. How the families were murdered was horrific, and the way Ellison became overly involved in his investigation was crazy too. I think it would have set the bar if the "supernatural entity" was a masked human to disguise himself though. For me, it made it less scary for me knowing "the killer" wasn't real. In my opinion, the supernatural parts were the weakest moments in the movie, it felt like The Grudge to me. But I would highly recommend for a scary night out.

    Scary!

    by

This movie scared the sh*t out of me! It had me (and the rest of the audience) jumping out of my seat a dozen times. Definitely go, and take someone to hold on to!

A refreshing look at the Boogie Man

While I'm not a a fanatic of horror films, I did enjoy this one. The film makers do a great job of using wide angles and camera movement to keep you on your toes and to cloak the predictability of the scares. You will find yourself equally disappointed by the scare value in some scenes as you are rewarded in others. They manipulate the timing and sound very well to supplement the great camera and edit work. Good scare value in this film.

The story is a rehashing of the Boogie Man folklore but it takes awhile for that story to materialize. I would say overall: It's above average for a scare flick. Mixes in a little bit of the disturb-factor and you get a decent Halloween movie.

One note to be made: Mr. Ransone (the deputy) does a great job stealing scenes from Hawke. His chops as a comical actor were superb. Timing was great.

    Seen this before!

    by

I think I'm just getting tired of these movies. Claiming to be the scariest thing in years but its just the same ol same. Floor bumps, jump cuts, and zombie-esque children. I'm just not frightened because I'm looking for it already. I had this movie so timed to the beat that I knew exactly when to blow "Boo" in this girl's ear to get that maximum effect. I was the scariest part of the movie for her no doubt! My point is its all too predictable and in my view another in a long line of mediocre horror flicks! It's sinister how they got me for a dub!

    Must see !!

Way better then i thought it would be excellent plot, very suspenseful/chilling, I loved how the mystery of it comes together and the audience didnt find it confusing. although a little shorter and the ending was not how i pictured it was a twist to my presumption of what was going to happen. MUST SEE!!

    Sinister

    by geppie

Kept waiting for something really scary to happen. This movie was a dud. Of course all the highlights were in the previews. I would have rated this movie PG not R. Everything happened in the same place, in the house. It got boring to me.

    Not too bad!

This movie seemed kinda campy to me when I first saw the trailers, maybe thiking in the back of my mind it was going to be yet another Blair Witch/Paranormal Activity re-hash; but I was pleasantly surprised. It had the usual plot points and the annoying, everything is your fault wife, but it was all put together in an original manner with some disturbing imagery without the typical horror porn associated with the "SAW-People". I recommend going to see this movie in the theaters, made me jump 3 times, plus the surround sound of the theater lets you hear all the little bumps and slams that you just wont get at home. Not an excellent horror movie, nothing even comes close these days, but good and enjoyable.

    Sinister

This movie is absolutely crazy. The writers and directors constantly find different ways to push the envelope in every scene. This movie contains extremely disturbing scenes even to a scary movie buff such as I. I recommend seeing this movie but if you were to bring anyone they must not either get scared easily, or be squeamish. The idea is a completely new original idea, so it keeps you interested. The only downfall is the ending. Its like the movie was going so great and then they had to end it the quickest way possible. Go see it!

Better than I thought it would be

    by

The story behind this movie is great and the scenes are not conservative about how all of the murders happen. I jumped several times and had to close my eyes a couple of times. Creepy and refreshing, plot-wise.

    Sinister: A Haunting Horror Classic

The best part of the movie is the films. Just when I was convinced that found footage movies were tired and needed to be retired along comes a movie that completely refreshed the trope. And because the found footage is old 8 mm reels it has a distorted look and feel to it, adding to the film?s horror.

The films are more than just a plot device, they are a character in and of themselves. They are presented to Ellison Oswalt (Ethan Hawke), like a dismembered mouse left by the family cat. Difference being that the cat?s offering is out of love. The films are something far more sinister. A self-serving delivery of evil. The films are grotesque echoes of things past, and things to come.

Halloween is the time for spine-chilling terror and Sinister is a perfect expression for the season.
