One third good two thirds irritating

    by Donzer

I thought the first two thirds of the movie were very irritating and incredibly hard to watch. It got somewhat interesting just in time to keep me from walking out. I did enjoy the last third, which was both funny and touching. Could have done without all the irritating screaming and grating dialog up to that point.

Definitely a "don't go" beginning and a "must go" end.

    Silver Linings Playbook

    by jernof

The last 20-30 minutes of this movie were good... But not good enough to warrant sitting through what it took to get there. Do yourself a favor and skip this one.

    Good but not Oscar good

Good little flck to watch but not close to one that should be Oscar worthy.
Bradley Cooper was actually very good and his acting much stronger than Jennifer Lawrence.
Worth as a Sunay afternoon flick.

    Riveting

Bradley Cooper, Jennifer Lawrence and Robert DeNiro play their roles so authentically and with great grit. This characterization of emotionally challenged souls could easily pander and go askew, but none of these actors ever lose touch with the humanity of their character. I remained riveted through the movie; never distracted, never lost. What a masterful performance, by these three and by all.

    Awesome Movie :)

    by

Jennifer Lawrence is not only really beautiful but also an awesome actress, with a chip on her shoulder constantly it always seems. She and Bradley Cooper, who is also very good, have a fantastic chemistry with each other. Robert De Niro once again shows himself to be an ageless wonder, as he again is fantastic :) The story is a really tough one, but speaks to the elements of love, happiness, friendship and others that I think we all always strive for in our lives. How Bradley Cooper's character Pat and Jennifer Lawrence's Tiffany meet, and have there friendship, then relationship develop is a sobering but also somewhat comforting and pleasing portrayal of what real life and love can be like!! Definitely recommend this movie to pretty much all movie-going audiences :)!!!

    Performances are a WOW!

This movie is a great portrayal of a dysfunctional family trying to come together. While I overheard someone say it was offensive, I found it to be very true to the subject.
Bradley Cooper and Jennifer Lawrence were awesome! Bipolar Disorder is destructive and painful, but the manic behavior can also be comical when viewed by an outsider. Not for everyone but well worth it!

    Loved It!

Thoroughly enjoyed this "slice of life" movie. Great character interaction, romance, and left you feeling great when you left the theater. A little slow at first, but then picks up. Far better than most of the garbage put out these days.....and a story about real people and real life.

Predictable, yes but a GREAT movie none the less

Bradley Cooper plays his role flawlessly and Jennifer Lawrence is amazing! The movie is real, very believable and a perfect blend of humor, drama and romance. It just makes you feel good! We need more movies like this one!

Best Movie of the year! HANDS down

Trailer does NOT capture the essence of this amazingly scripted movie. Bradley Copper was believable every step of the way. Jennifer Lawrence rocked her role. Robert DiiNero is perfect.
Great storyline. GO GO GO...will NOT disappoint!.

There's gold in this Silver Lining

Not since 'Ordinary People' have I been so effectively seduced into suspending disbelief and taking the journey through the sometimes frustrating, sometimes unbelievable and sometimes annoying mineshafts of mental illness. But where Ordinary People was purposeful and serious 'Silver Linings Playbook' is a kaleidoscopic view of familial and societal mores and mannerisms; whimsical here, whiplike there.
Bradley Cooper is a difficult but engaging guide; Jennifer Lawrence is embraceably unemotional (until she HAS to be,) Robert DeNiro, believe it or not is adorable and Jacki Weaver and Chris Tucker are pitch-perfect; but so are Julia Stiles,John Ortiz and Anupam Kher. And did I forget to mention that script and direction are at the same high level as trhe acting?

    Pleasantly Surprised

I did not know much about the story going in to the theater, except that it was a romantic comedy with Brad having some sort of handicap. I believe his acting was spectacular as was Jessica Lawrence's. The story was fun as it moved along yet there were serious moments. I would certainly recommend this for a good night out. Definately worth it.

    Silver Linings Playbook

My boyfriend and I had date night and decided to see this move and I'm glad that we did, we throughly enjoyed it. The movie had a little of everything and for the adult age groups. It was funny, serious, love story with a twist for the male population. Bradley Cooper played a great roll and of course Robert Dinaro was his usually great self. We recommended this movie to many after we came out of the show.

    Good Movie

Great character development. Enjoyed the story and great acting all of the way around. Good movie to see on a date with someone you may have been with for a while. Even though it was good don't really get the Oscar buzz.

    Wow. Sensational.

    by

Just a few short hours before going to see this I was telling a friend how, up to this point, I had been pretty underwhelmed with the Best Picture nominees that I had seen. Not that they are not good, but that they never hit me with the "it" factor that separates a best picture nominee from just another good movie. This movie, though, has "IT." I have not been this emotionally invested in a film for some time now and yet I found myself as emotionally unstable as the crazy people in the film, having feelings range from happiness to frustration to nervousness. Bradley Cooper, well, I was wrong about him and he is much more than a handsome jerk in every film; he really nails this. Jennifer Lawrence is fantastic and is right there on the same level as Robert De Niro here. It is nice to have Chris Tucker back in film but, in my opinion, Jacki Weaver was the personification of emotions and helped put this film on a tier of its own for 2012. The camera work was also creative.

    Unexpected Warmth

David O. Russell is not one of my favorite filmmakers. Often using actors I'm not fond of, I've only seen one of his films all the way through, the excellent "Three Kings". With my opinion of him colored by his famous off-screen feuds with George Clooney and Lily Tomlin, I've never been one to seek his movies out.

But the potential of Bradley Cooper, Robert DeNiro and Jennifer Lawrence was impossible to ignore. And, fueled by their terrific performances - and those of a great supporting cast - Russell knocks "Silver Lining Playbook" out of the ballpark.

Powerfully human, emotionally rewarding, and featuring the most realistic depiction of daily living with a "functional" mental illness, this non-rom com is exactly what a post-millennial romantic comedy should be. And though the events of the "third act" are pretty conventional, the depiction of and performances in that last reel are anything but.

Cooper, DeNiro and Lawrence are all Oscar-caliber.
