Cooper Kudos
Until now Bradley Cooper was just another name on a long list of too-butch-and-too-cute romantic leading men in Hollywood. But now I'm going to have to take him seriously, along with Matthew McConaughey, whom I disliked on first glance as much as I dislike Paul Ryan, and for the same reasons. In this film Cooper shows himself to be not only a serious actor, but an exceptionally good one. I hope that producers and directors will get past his good looks and charming manner and cast him in more roles like this one. It's much to the credit of the director that he made sure that the costume and makeup designer down-played, rather than accentuated, Cooper's looks. And the twenty-three or so year-old female lead, Jennifer Lawrence, is a genius. Not the least of my praises is the ensemble work led by De Niro and Weaver it's one of the most interesting films I've seen in a long time, and by far the most interesting film, ever, about mental illness.
