For the first ten minutes or so hang in there
It starts off a bit dark, almost unbearable. But hang in there. The moment Jennifer Lawrence comes into the picture, the connection is made, the story comes alive. I am not saying the problem that is the story has its answer. It is more that you know that you are watching a drama that is dark and beautiful at the same time. A drama that is achingly real. I am sure everyone will say the end turns it into a dramatic comedy. And, technically, I guess it does. But, if it is a comedy, it is one that you will never forget. Lawrence should have gotten the Oscar for Wintersbone. She won't get it for this either - RCs seldom get noticed when it comes to that. But I don't know of another Amercian actress that could have pulled this character off as well as she did. I guess this is supposed to be Cooper's movie. He was good. But without her, he would have just been annoying.
OK - wait - he was more than good. It is not easy to pull off BiPolar. He did it.
