Different than expected, but very enjoyable

Overall, I enjoyed the movie, although at times the stylization reminded me of Moulin Rouge (which is one movie I truly dislike), but the costumes and acting were so well-done that I was able to enjoy the film and the story. My friend was in tears at the end (I am not so emotional as she) and she thoroughly enjoyed it.

I love the quote from the Countess in the early part of the film: "I'd rather say I wish I hadn't than I wish I had." (Which is ironic by the end of the story.)

    OMG--It Was Awful!

The 2 1/2 stars that it received was far too generous. Everything about it was dreadful--especially the script, and casting. Don't waste your time--it was almost laughable.

    AMAZING!!

If I hadn't seen A Royal Affair or Looper yet, this would be my favorite movie of the year. I understand how people with ADD couldn't keep track of the on and off of the stage but it gives it character and demonstrates the craft of this movie. Everyone's performances were phenomenal.

    A disappointment...

    by

When the movie was slated to come out, I was thrilled. When I learned of the theatre setting format, I was curious, wondering how they would pull this massive story together that way. I did have misgivings, and my instincts were right. The book was about so much more than Anna, yet the characters that came together in it were seemingly minor in importance to her in this film. Levin, my favorite character, was frail and spiritless. Kitty basically a side note. Scenes changed, and it was up to the viewer to figure it out. Woe to those that had never read the book! This movie should have been an epic, telling a story. The opportunity was missed, however, in favor of theatrics that left me empty. Vronsky looked like a schoolboy beside Anna. The movie was beautiful, but only a beautiful snack. Not even a good appetizer. :( Jude Law was wonderful, but not given enough opportunity. The camera does love Keira, but the numerous closeups could not win my heart, even though she shined at times.

SEMI MUSICAL FEEL TO IT...SEMI IMPRESSED

I was somewhat disappointed with the music and cinematography arrangement. I was expecting to see something that felt like a drama with an interesting historical lesson. However, what I got was a story with the kind of music from a production like Annie. I almost thought someone was going to be flying across the screen or something. I like some musicals... just not what I expected when I bought my ticket.

Terrible film adaptation of a great Tolstoy novel

Turn back! Run away! Go see a hobit or a british special agent or a vampire. Do not waste any money on this film. I don't think I am "enlightened" enough to appreciate a movie, within a play, within a musical, within a nightmare, but this story is nothing like what we expected. This is a tremendous novel; why they chose to make it a film in this way is baffling. It confuses everyrhing about the novel and only distracts from what could have been an outstanding cast. If it is not the random tuba player that interjects himself into the scene, it is the blindingly stupid scenes involving ink stamping and coat changes. I do love movies and pride myself on the fact that I must stay to watch a film unitl its' end no matter how bad (although Punch Drunk Love was the exception) but AK certainily tested my will. Good Luck if you choose to drop the $10+. Remember, you were forwarned.

A surreal reimagining of a classic story

A brilliant and captivating reimagining of the novel, blurring the lines of fantasy and reality as only Tom Stoppard can. But be aware before you go that this is not a typical movie epic. It is a surreal rendition of Anna Karenina that mysteriously blends elements of opera, ballet, musical theater, tableau vivant, and impressionist painting.

You thought it was going to be boring but......

    by

you didn't know the half of it. Not only was it incredibly boring, but the staging which attempted to be artsy was childish, and the directing was heavy handed and awful which led to extreme overacting. Do not torture yourself by going and avoid it when it comes out on blueray/dvd. If you choose to watch it when it comes on TV, you'll be so very grateful for the commercials.

    Anna Karenina

What a fabulous adaptation of Leo Tolstoy?s Anna Karenina. The presentation was dramatic, theatrical and poetically beautiful. What a feast. But I could not be convinced that Keira Knightley (Anna) would give up Jude Law (her husband) for Aaron Taylor-Johnson (Vronsky).

    Beautiful, visually stunning, yet boring

    by kpions

The setting was beautiful. The structure of the movie was a bit confusing. After an hour it became boring and just wanted her to end it. Gratefully that happened. The acting was good with a bit too much crying.

    Anna Karenina

Costuming was lovely. Characters all attractive to look at.
Substantively the film was a disappointment, using some of the core themes of a classic novel to deliver of story of unfaithfulness and retribution without any insights into the characters other than they do everything with style (of the period?).

    Anna Karenina

I headed for this movie, which, by the way, left the theater abruptly, because it has great actors and was a period movie. I was pleasantly surprised with the way it started out in a theater, moved from scene to scene through the back stage and ended in the theater. The costumes stood out as spectacular as well as the sets. I felt Kiera Knightly's acting showed advancemens from her past films and Jude Law truly put in a great performance. Now I'd like to see it again, but its not anywhere around. Perhaps we'll see some Academy nominations for it and it will come back.

    Beautiful soundtrack

It?s a very mature and well-composed piece of music. A little repetitive in some places, but the film convention somehow forced the narrowing to mostly the waltz music. You can listen to it here: [BLOCKED WEBSITE]

    Anna Karenina

    by

We were expecting Dr. Zhivago; however, it fell short. It left you scratching your head. 90% of it takes place on a stage or as part of an audience at the theater. They step outside the stage for some scenes, but they are not as believable or breathtaking as those from Dr. Zhivago. The story was weak and I wouldn't have cast the Count (he was hard to look at & almost laughable) & the young princess looked like you took Brittany Spears and dropped her in a ballgown from 1874. So disappointed that I now gave the reigns back to my husband to pick the next two movies of his choice.
