    Too much surrealism.

    by doclewk

I liked some of the acting, and the dialog was very good. But the surrealism I found distracting to the story. The music, costumes and cinematography were phenomenal, though.

    Beautiful, visually stunning, yet boring

    by kpions

The setting was beautiful. The structure of the movie was a bit confusing. After an hour it became boring and just wanted her to end it. Gratefully that happened. The acting was good with a bit too much crying.

    Beautiful soundtrack

It?s a very mature and well-composed piece of music. A little repetitive in some places, but the film convention somehow forced the narrowing to mostly the waltz music. You can listen to it here: [BLOCKED WEBSITE]

    awful

    by john612

My wife and I love period piece dramas and the like. This was an attempt to do some artsy stuff with this film going from a play type film to a movie style. I was so awlful we left after 45 minutes. We just could not stand it anymore. I have seen pride and prejudice and it was very good so I thought this might be along to the same lines. However this was a total waste of time and money. I would not recommend this flim to anyone as it was a huge disappointment.

    Very pretty, but....

This isn't Pride and Prejudice....it's more a Chanel commercial for Tolstoy. The movie is very stylized to the detriment of characterization....Count Vronksy is a 19th Century club kid until he suddenly becomes emotionally adult (but nothing leads you to that conclusion) and the same goes with Anna, the dutiful wife who shuns Vronsky and then is suddenly in bed with him and on and on. I really liked Matthew Macfadyen (who teams up with Knightley again), as Anna's brother...I've never seen him so alive and animated (he usually seems dull and plodding). I'd say go see it if you like Tolstoy....but despite the beauty, I was struggling to literally stay awake at 10am on a Saturday morning.

    Anna Karenina

Even though I fell asleep mid-way thru, I liked most of what I saw. I do like Jude Law & Keira Knightly. I think I wanted a little more action. Worth going to see (as the people were saying how much they loved it, walking out of the theater) I missed some key parts

    Anna Karenina

Acting was great. Unusual mixture of theater setting and regular settings mixed well with scenes that went outdoors and made the story which could be quite long if done differently, move quickly. Clothes were fabulous, scenery was very well done and Keira Kneightly was fabulous. Jude Law was very convincing as her husband.

    What an odd production

I was excited to see this movie. I love period pieces. I found the production of the film to be odd. The dance scene beyond weird. I don't know what the director was thinking but it didn't work for me. The acting was okay but this movie didn't evoke any emotion from me. I was glad when it ended.

I did enjoy the costumes. They were lovely.

Why call it Anna Karenina. Why not call it "I am so clever as a writer/director?"

    by Elainee

It open showing a theater and the people/characters in it. Curtains, wheels, walkways...behind the scenes. Ah..a train! That's foreshadowing, just in case you didn't know. There are no real people, no character development. Just magnificently dresse beautiful people wandering about when they are not dancing. It is a pagnent. But so over the top it becomes silly. The jewlery should win an Oscar. Not the actors.

You thought it was going to be boring but......

    by

you didn't know the half of it. Not only was it incredibly boring, but the staging which attempted to be artsy was childish, and the directing was heavy handed and awful which led to extreme overacting. Do not torture yourself by going and avoid it when it comes out on blueray/dvd. If you choose to watch it when it comes on TV, you'll be so very grateful for the commercials.

Story line was good but scene transitions were annoying

I enjoyed the story line, as I had not read the book. However, they transitioned between scenes as if it was a play. That made it very hard to get into the story and feel compassion or any other type of feeling for the characters because the transitions took you out of the story. I would wait for video.

    Art for arts sake

This was one of the worst movies I have ever seen. There was no character development and the use of the "staging" was distracting and unnecessary. I wanted to go ask for my money back. Anna Karenina is a classic love story, and the director forgot to tell The story. the only bright spot in the whole thing was Jude Law. Don't go see this movie.

    A disappointment...

    by

When the movie was slated to come out, I was thrilled. When I learned of the theatre setting format, I was curious, wondering how they would pull this massive story together that way. I did have misgivings, and my instincts were right. The book was about so much more than Anna, yet the characters that came together in it were seemingly minor in importance to her in this film. Levin, my favorite character, was frail and spiritless. Kitty basically a side note. Scenes changed, and it was up to the viewer to figure it out. Woe to those that had never read the book! This movie should have been an epic, telling a story. The opportunity was missed, however, in favor of theatrics that left me empty. Vronsky looked like a schoolboy beside Anna. The movie was beautiful, but only a beautiful snack. Not even a good appetizer. :( Jude Law was wonderful, but not given enough opportunity. The camera does love Keira, but the numerous closeups could not win my heart, even though she shined at times.

    Anna Karenina

Movie is very artsy changing between the stage and reality. That proves a bit confusing at first. It is beautifully filmed, but the chemistry between Anna and the Count is flat. Jude Law is excellent as the long suffering husband.

    AMAZING!!

If I hadn't seen A Royal Affair or Looper yet, this would be my favorite movie of the year. I understand how people with ADD couldn't keep track of the on and off of the stage but it gives it character and demonstrates the craft of this movie. Everyone's performances were phenomenal.
