    Surrealism Not Up to Story

    by nktex

Anna Karenina is a great book, and there have been fine productions. While this one has beautiful performances, I found that the extreme stylization trivialized this very dramatic tale. The score was not good, either. Very disappointed.

    Anna Karenina

    by sezaal

The placing of the movie in a theater became increasingly irrelevant and was even rather irritating. But the acting was good all round and the film was enjoyable. I liked it more than my husband did. Definitely not a kids movie.

    A disappointment...

    by

When the movie was slated to come out, I was thrilled. When I learned of the theatre setting format, I was curious, wondering how they would pull this massive story together that way. I did have misgivings, and my instincts were right. The book was about so much more than Anna, yet the characters that came together in it were seemingly minor in importance to her in this film. Levin, my favorite character, was frail and spiritless. Kitty basically a side note. Scenes changed, and it was up to the viewer to figure it out. Woe to those that had never read the book! This movie should have been an epic, telling a story. The opportunity was missed, however, in favor of theatrics that left me empty. Vronsky looked like a schoolboy beside Anna. The movie was beautiful, but only a beautiful snack. Not even a good appetizer. :( Jude Law was wonderful, but not given enough opportunity. The camera does love Keira, but the numerous closeups could not win my heart, even though she shined at times.

    Bravo!

I am Russian and I have seen multiple versions of this movie ( I also read the book a million times since Tolstoy is my favorite author). None of the movies had ever touched me as this one did. Director did an amazing job with the theater-like transitions. Because of them all the scenes move really fast and you don't waste any time. Considering that the book is about 600 pages, it really helps. Plus, it keeps you focused on the main characters.
I was very curious about how British would interpret such a classic piece, and I was not disappointed. As usual, they stayed very close to the story, the details were realistic.
But the best part of the movie is the acting. Keira is outstanding as always, Jude Law is unbelievable(his best), and Vronsky is the way I imagined him when I was reading the novel.
The chemistry between Anna and Vronsky is so vivid, it's electrifying. You really feel like you are there! The final touch is the fantastic music.Definitely watching it again.
    Bravo!

A very difficult movie to sum up

This is one of the most beautiful films I've ever seen - and I've seen a lot in the past 40+ years. One of its chief attractions is that the director has given us long, rich, thoughtful takes. There's none of the choppy editing that wreaks havoc on the mind. Every performance is full and complex. Although the story may not match Tolstoy precisely, the film stands on its own. I like the casting very much. Keira Knightley and Jude Law play their roles to perfection, as do many of the supporting cast members.

The decision to play the scenes in and out of the theater set was captivating and never felt odd or forced. I can't tell you why it works so well, only that it does.

The film is 2 hours and 10 minutes of pure pleasure.

    Beautiful story.

Disappointing in general, but still worth seeing. Costumes, theatre sets and acting were excellent. The ending was emtional. Glad I saw it, but not good enough to watch twice.

    Gorgeous but otherwise......

If sets, costumes and jewelry are your thing, don't miss it. Otherwise it's turgid, and miscast in it's most important role--Count Vronsky. Jude Law's Karenina may be stiff and formal, but he's kind, Arron Taylor-Johnson is foppish and insipid. Why would she leave her son, her life's love, for a fop?

    Anna Karenina

Too artsy, story line is known by most adults.seeing a show within a
show was distracting. Leading man was too foppish though sympathetic. I would not recommend this movie.

    Absolutely Awful!

    by Fern123

This movie was so ridiculously awful that is was almost comical. We would have walked out if we didn?t have to make everyone in our row get up.

    OMG--It Was Awful!

The 2 1/2 stars that it received was far too generous. Everything about it was dreadful--especially the script, and casting. Don't waste your time--it was almost laughable.

If you want to see a ridiculous movie that thinks it's a play go to see this. We walked out after 15 minutes. It's like they are trying to win a cinematolgraphy award with no substance. If I wanted to see live theater I would go to a play not a movie. Worst movie of the year.

Beautiful to look at, wonderful music to listen to, fabulous performances, over the top costumes and sets, and a timeless story combined with relevance in a specific historic time -- what could be better.

Entertaining but not a must see

If you like period movies with great scenery and costumes, this is a great choice. But the setting was a bit strange (I don't want to say more as to give it away) and a bit confusing. The plotline is classic "soap opera" and, since I have not read the book, I can't say how true to the plot it was. The acting, however, was very good and it was a good way to spend a rainy Sunday. If you miss it at the movies, DVD is a good option for this movie.

    Great Movie

    by INSC

This movie honors Russia and so many Russian traditions; done in the style of The Ark, another great movie about Russia. The transitions, costumes, details in the scenes are so well done. Really enjoyed it.
