    Hybrid style fails!

The play/film fusion was choppy and never grabs you...no willing suspension of disbelief. However the visuals were rich and scene transitions were creative. I usually love period pieces, but this one did not make it.

Tolstoy slaughtered by High School film class ....

    by kcbk

Trying to be artistic, this film is just weird. Staged like a Mary Poppins musical but no one sings. Several in our audience just got up and left. I heard a few snores. Costumes were nice. Especially hats. Can't believe this film actually got made. Leo might be laughing from the grave---or crying. Watch grass grow -- cheaper entertainment.

    Simply Stunning!!!

I've always been a big fan of Keira Knightly and have adored Joe Wright's work since Pride and Prejudice. So, I was so excited to see Anna Karenina! Keira is simply breathtaking in this film and the movie itself is visually stunning. The costumes are also impeccable. I wasn't very familiar with the story. I was a little confused in the beginning but was able to follow the plot. Be prepared for high drama, intense romance, and intrigue. The movie is also very artistic and stylistic. At times, it feels like you're watching a beautiful work of art coming to life or a performance art piece. Jude Law is astonishing and Matthew MacFayden (also a big fan) is great, too! The chemistry between Aaron Johnson and Keira is palpable making the entire movie a deliciously rich romantic tragedy that is simply stunning to watch. I have to admit, the movie was a bit slow at times and I could have had more love scenes; but, overall I'd HIGHLY recommend it!

    Anna Karenina

Too artsy, story line is known by most adults.seeing a show within a
show was distracting. Leading man was too foppish though sympathetic. I would not recommend this movie.

You thought it was going to be boring but......

    by

you didn't know the half of it. Not only was it incredibly boring, but the staging which attempted to be artsy was childish, and the directing was heavy handed and awful which led to extreme overacting. Do not torture yourself by going and avoid it when it comes out on blueray/dvd. If you choose to watch it when it comes on TV, you'll be so very grateful for the commercials.

    Fantastic Choreography & Magnificent Sets!

It is very hard to describe this movie, partly because I have never seen anything like it before! The formal dancing is incredibly intricate, & the way the actors move back and forth between theater and real life is very entertaining. The sets and costumes are also first rate, a feast for the eyes! Just be ready for intense emotion between various characters as the movie progresses!

    long, boring and no chemistry

    by

The movie is too long, weirdly shot and quite boring. The actors have absolutely no chemistry together. it's supposed to be a tumlultuos love affair. It's not even luke warm! Wouldn't waste my time. Sorry Keira, i love you, but this one is a bust!

    awful

    by john612

My wife and I love period piece dramas and the like. This was an attempt to do some artsy stuff with this film going from a play type film to a movie style. I was so awlful we left after 45 minutes. We just could not stand it anymore. I have seen pride and prejudice and it was very good so I thought this might be along to the same lines. However this was a total waste of time and money. I would not recommend this flim to anyone as it was a huge disappointment.

    What an odd production

I was excited to see this movie. I love period pieces. I found the production of the film to be odd. The dance scene beyond weird. I don't know what the director was thinking but it didn't work for me. The acting was okay but this movie didn't evoke any emotion from me. I was glad when it ended.

I did enjoy the costumes. They were lovely.

    Anna Karenina

Acting was great. Unusual mixture of theater setting and regular settings mixed well with scenes that went outdoors and made the story which could be quite long if done differently, move quickly. Clothes were fabulous, scenery was very well done and Keira Kneightly was fabulous. Jude Law was very convincing as her husband.

    Beautiful story.

    by

Disappointing in general, but still worth seeing. Costumes, theatre sets and acting were excellent. The ending was emtional. Glad I saw it, but not good enough to watch twice.

See It Again For the First Time!

If you think you've seen "Anna Karenina" before -- or read the book -- you'll be surprised
at what you see in this version. It's a berautifully directed/acted piece, worth seeing if only
for the spectacular production values, costumes and sets. A masterpiece of editing!
Not a Kiera fan, but she's brilliant here, as is Jude Law and Aaron Johnson. Haven't spoken
to anyone who didn't find something magnificent about the film!

Very pretty, but a bit choppy.

    by

While it was beautifully done, there were parts that the audience laughed out loud in that were meant to be serious. I would save this for a movie night at home.

A very difficult movie to sum up

This is one of the most beautiful films I've ever seen - and I've seen a lot in the past 40+ years. One of its chief attractions is that the director has given us long, rich, thoughtful takes. There's none of the choppy editing that wreaks havoc on the mind. Every performance is full and complex. Although the story may not match Tolstoy precisely, the film stands on its own. I like the casting very much. Keira Knightley and Jude Law play their roles to perfection, as do many of the supporting cast members.

The decision to play the scenes in and out of the theater set was captivating and never felt odd or forced. I can't tell you why it works so well, only that it does.

The film is 2 hours and 10 minutes of pure pleasure.

    GOOD movie, BAD projection

This fine visual spectacle was RUINED by a mis-aligned projection lens on one projector at the Consolidated KAHALA 8 theaters, which is the only theater showing this movie. The whole left side of the screen was defocused every other reel. If you're looking to see this movie DON'T see it at this theater and if you do, complain to the manager and ask for your money back. Its really too bad, I enjoyed this movie except for the poor projection.

bealerrr I wish Anna Karenina was about Levin. His tortured soul is much simpler, and more pragmatic. None of this flamboyant suicide.
