    I'm a fan !

I thought this was an excellent adaptation of the stage production - all that I expected and more. Beautiful score - great performances (although I'm one of those Russell Crowe fans who feels he was definitely miscast). Still - a great experience. Take your tissues and dress comfortably - it's just under 3 hours in length.

    Impressive

I really enjoyed it. Anne Hathaway blew me away. Planning to go see it again. I hear people complaining about the constant state of close-ups, and I may have as well if I hadn't heard the director on NPR saying why it was that way. He stated that, for example when Valjean is conflicted about having stolen the silver in the beginning but being accepted by the priest, the director says that shot isn't about the room that Valjean is in or the way the set is painted, it is about the dialogue that Valjean is having with himself. I can agree as being that close in to Hugh Jackman's acting out that turmoil made it more intimate for me.

Outstanding! - what a new and different movie experience

    by

This movie blew me away. The videography and scenery were unbelievable and you can absolutely tell that the actors sang their parts rather than lip synced them.

    My Review

I liked the film, but enjoyed the stage musical better. The acting was superb, cinematography intense, but the sound was limited. The music was classically good, but only in my opinion the stage sound of stage performers is better. This movie should not be seen at home on DVD. YOU MUST SEE IT ON THE BIG SCREEN.

    Les Miserables

Absolutely loved it. I do think that Russell Crowe was miscast... still trying to get used to him singing. But the rest were outstanding and a magnificent spectacle.

    Good show, good acting

    by

Very good acting & singing, sometimes it seemed to be a bit long in some places. Since I have never read the original, I can't say how well this follows the original. Good stryline.

    Must See

This is a wonderful presentation of the musical. The visual impact of the time brought the music to life. Victor Hugo wrote a fantastic story, and the provided the basis for a Broadway musical, which successfully morphed into a wonderful movie.

AmandaSeyfreid is better than Russell Crowe!!! Who saw THAT coming???

A movie of soaring heights and deadening lows. Impressively mounted and goreously shot, this is an in-your-face entertainment that doesn't know when to quit. The "big" scenes/songs are full of emotional impact, but the softer, more intimate songs are given the same "battering ram" treatment--the result of which was that I had to pull myself away from the movie, which caused long stretches of boredom. Hooper shows none of the skill that won him Best Director for The King's Speech.

Jackman and Hathaway shine in this movie. Samatha Barks makes quite an impression as Eponine as does Isabelle Allen as the young Cosette. Russell Crowe is grossly miscast as Inspector Javert and is the least effective actor in the movie (even Amanda Seyfreid as Cosette is better and I never thought THAT could happen!)

    Best Musical Movie ever

    by

I'm a fan of the Broadway show and knew I had to see this movie. I had high hopes it would be a better adaptation than the Phantom of the Opera movie was. And I was not disappointed. The only complaint I can even come up with is that Russell Crowe really can't sing and I wish they'd had someone else in the roll of Javert, but even that couldn't stop the movie from being a complete emotional rollercoaster. Having the actors all sing during the actual scenes instead of filling in the music later really stood out and helped make this movie a success.

I don't believe there was a dry eye in the theater at points during the movie, and I'm really glad I brought tissues with me as I really needed them. Everyone clapped loudly when the ending credits began and I have to say I've never felt more emotionally drained from a movie in my life. I WILL see this again and own it on BluRay when it comes out, there's no doubt in my mind of that. I highly recommend this movie.

    Did not disappoint

    by

I love musicals and had never seen this on stage, so I could not wait to see the movie. It did not disappoint. The acting while singing beautifully was award winning! Best movie I've seen in a long time. I think I will see it again and buy the DVD.

    Musical Theatre Heaven

I am a confessed musical theatre GEEK, not necessarily a "Les Mis" crazy geek. I've seen it 3 times on stage, along with public TV concert & anniversary shows. This was more enjoyable because the acting and plot advancement were equal to the musical rapture. And Hugh Jackman was in it.....A+

    Epic fail

Les Miserables is such a fabulous story yet unbelievably this producer managed to destroy it. Overwhelming the senses with unnecessary violence and gratuitous scenes of vile behavior by beloved icons of culture made me want to retch. Hugh Jackman's acting is the only redeeming element of this film. If you want to be moved by this story then I recommend that you see the play, ditch the movie. Two thumbs down!

    Wonderful!

    by

The movie is fantastic. It's a little sad that the movie is SO significantly better than the play. I did not really know what the heck was going on when I saw the play. And the music is good in the play BUT in the film, everything is so vivid, up close and I know I should be shot for saying this... But I actually liked the way Anne Hathaway sang I dreamed a dream better than Patty Lapone. Something about the way Anne Hathaway sang it, more personal and emotionally connected than the "theater" version, Patty Lapone sings just made it so great. And ALL the characters are so much more tangible. Sacha B Cohen is PERFECT with Helena B Carter. Hugh Jackman deserves an Oscar. The other actors were amazing too...Cosette young ..totally adorable & older Amanda S, Marius (Eddie R), Éponine (Samantha Barks) even Russel Crowe, all of them were wonderful.
If you like musicals this to me is a brilliant combination of film and theater. LOVE IT!! Can't wait to see more like this.
    :)

    Half & Half

I liked the movie in that it allowed me to better comprehend what I had seen in the musical and in understanding the meaning of the songs. But I was somewhat disappointed with the actual singing. One example was that of Hugh Jackman, who I saw on Broadway. his performance / voice on Broadway was fabulous. Whereas, his voice sounded disappointing in the movie. He was not alone in bad singing performances. Thus I did not find one singing performance that took me away or that I would even remember.

    No No No

The acting is not compelling, the singing is mostly talk-singing, and the voice of the adult Cozette is ear-piercingly irritating-ouch she's giving me a head-ache! MAKE IT STOP!!!
Very disappointed! I went because I figured they would be able to do so much more as far as visualizing details and story tellng, but all they did was add more gross details, like the sewer scene.
I suggest that if people can't see the real play, buy the play version on dvd. The REAL Les Mis is sooooo much better in every way!
AND WHY IS ARE THEY TALKING OSCAR FOR ANNE HATHAWAY??? she's only so so for the all of 15 minutes she's on screen!
