    Bring the Kleenex

    by gigg101

An amazing performance by all - the raw emotion that was displayed in this film brought such a credibility to the delivery of the story, it's characters and the inner values of the story. Most striking is the message of Val Jean's steadfastness to remember the grace he received and to pay that grace forward, replacing the bitterness and hate. It isn't easy to watch - times during that period were desperate and they don't sugar coat that - but sometimes we need a dose of reality to make us understand how much we take for granted. We left the theater humbled.

Don't Miss This and You will Be Forever Changed!

I watched the movie of this novel many years ago and it forever changed my views of many things. Watching this adaptation of the musical brought my appreciation to a whole new level. The seamless blending of the music and the acting let you simply ride the roller coaster of emotions that this movie brings into your life. If this movie does not win awards then something is seriously wrong with the world!

    A Great Film Experience!

    by jzactor

Les MIserables is a wonderful film. It is extremely moving. You would have to be a committed cynic to not like it. The performances of the actors are superb, including the singing of the actors with one exception. In type, Russell Crowe is well cast, in voice, he chants & did not truly reach the depths of inner anguish required for the role. His most tragic moment near the end of the film looks to me like he is just having a bad day at the office, not plunged in regret, sorrow & guilt. I expected the same kind of anguish we saw in him in A Beautfiul Mind. All the other characters are richly and deeply expressed by the cast, in particular Anne Hathaway, Hugh Jackman, Eddie Redmayne, the young ladies and all the very young child actors. I found the comic relief duo led by "Borat" only annoying. Too much jerky, close-up camera movement at times made me motion sick. Yet, Inspite of its flaws, the work of Jackman, Hathaway et all, left me with tears in my eyes and triumph in my heart!

    Les Miserables

True to the book. Cast is excellent although vocally inferior to any broadway stage production. Easily overlooked with superior acting and each fits the character. Anne Hathaway gives Oscar worthy performance as does Hugh Jackman and Russel Crowe. One of the best movies I've seen in a long time. Highly recommend. Don't miss this. Especially if you are a musical lover.

    A Valiant Effort

I have to preface this review by saying I am a huge fan of this musical. It is my absolute favorite, and I have seen it countless times on tour, on Broadway and regionally-big theaters and small. The film reminded me of one of my favorite staged productions which was in a small theater in the round. Hard to imagine if you have not seen it, but being so close to the actors and in such an intimate setting provided a much more intense experience emotionally. The film succeeds on this level, with the right amount of agnst and emotion, particularly in Hathaway's big number, "I Dreamed A Dream", and Redmayne's "Empty Chairs at Empty Tables". Not a dry eye in the house. Where the film was less successful was in the rest of its casting. Big names sell movies, but did Les Miserables need this when millions upon millions world-wide have seen and love this show? Crowe was awful, Jackman strained, Seyfried-why? Also, where was the gorgeous score? It never seemed to get off the ground.

    Don't MIS Out!!!

In a word Beautiful. They took this classic musical and reinvented while keeping all the same elements we have grown to love. Filmed to perfection but make sure you have a stock in Kleenex.

Are They Really Going to Sing Everything? Won Me Over!

I've seen a few musicals that I like, but they are generally the kind with established songs spaced throughout the film. When the movie started, it felt a little painful to see them singing just about every bit of dialogue,

That said, with the incredible story, beautiful cinematography, and extraordinary acting talent, it really won me over. Great movie!

    Go if you enjoy musicals

Very moving, very intense, and very long. If you can't sit though 3 hours of music - a total of 49 songs, don't go. If you like musicals, history, period costumes, and beautiful sets, you should indulge yourself.

    Very Much Enjoyed

I think the cast was amazing and the music itself was great. Only negative comment I can make is it was more an opera than a musical with consistent music and singing. Since the songs are largely based around the same three or four songs it could have used a little more spoken to break it up. Overall through it really sits with you and I recommend it.

Good But 1.camera work almost ruined it and 2. PG-15!

    by maritdw

Fabulous, BUT... ~~~Music was surprisingly good -coming from a die hard Les Mis fan. Acting was excellent. Costumes were good. The staging was nice. Story was exceptional -change your life- kind of story, as usual. Characters were for the most part very believable.~~~
The camera work was terrible. Almost ruined the movie! They shot it in a stylized format with very short depth of field - backgrounds blurry and directs your eyes where they want you to see. However, they missed. Short depth of field too short and with moving subjects? the closeups were out of focus about half of the time. Seriously! Why pay $10 for a movie when they don't have any of their face in focus? Not even one eye? VERY DISTRACTING! Also, they used wide angle lenses several times that distorted the faces too much. ~~~The vulgarity, and sex scene were too much. The violence was strong. Too much for a young teen.~~~Truer to the book than the musical - a little. good overall. See, but with caution.

Epic movie. Les Mis is a must see even for non-musical fans.

There were no weak spots for me. Started strong and built steadily. Hugh Jackman owned the role. Big fan of the original stage production and this delivered. Everything I could hope for. Kudos to the entire talented cast. Every one. Brutal and moving. I heard lots of sniffling by the end.

    Doesn't work!

I tried it, didn't like it. Left after 1 1/2 hrs. It does not work! You cannot cast very good actors and expect them to sing in a musical. Their voices are not good enough for the grandeur of this film or story. Really difficult to watch and listen to... the sound was just not equivalent to the picture. Very disappointing.
Borat was the only redeeming quality of the film.

A movie to "Experience", rather than "see".

This is not a movie to "see" as much as it is to "experience". It is deeply moving, entirely musical and, as far as I can remember, theatrically faithful to the stage production. If you have seen the stage production, read the book, or have seen any of the many versions brought to the screen, you will find this version entirely satisfying. If you are unfamiliar with Les Mis, as my friend was, it will knock your socks off! This is "A Three Handkerchief Movie"!

Visually, for me, some of the close-ups were too extreme because they were so constant, but then Ann Hathaway, Hugh Jackman, and Russell Crowe were incredible and owned the screen when they were on. Well done, worth going to, bring a date, and cry your heart out!

SHOULD BE BEST PICTURE OF THE YEAR

I WENT TO THIS MOVIE AFTER SEEING THE STAGE PLAY MANY TIMES, AND THE PBS 25 ANNIVERSARY PRODUCTION SEVERAL MORE TIMES. I WAS PREPARED TO HATE THESE
ACTORS TRYING TO SING...BOY WAS I WRONG. THIS IS A VERY POWERFUL MOVIE, EXTREMELY WELL DONE AND IT JUST BLEW ME AWAY. HAVING COLM WILKENSEN INCLUDED WAS ICING ON THE CAKE. I THOUGHT EDDIE REDMAYNE AS MARIUS WAS PROBABLY AMONG THE BEST MARIUS I HAVE SEEN...I LOVED HIM IN THIS PART. PROBABLY TO ME RUSSELL CROWE WAS THE WEAK LINK, BUT NOT BAD ENOUGH TO MAKE AN ISSUE OF IT. HUGH JACKMAN AND ANNE HATHAWAY WERE SUPERB. I THOUGHT IT A TOUGH UNDERTAKING WHEN YOU THINK OF THE HUNDREDS OF LES MES PRODUCTIONS...BUT THIS IS DEFINITELY A CANDIDATE FOR BEST PICTURE AND ONE I HIGHLY RECOMMEND...JUST TAKE YOUR KLEENEX!
