    Fantastic

The music is fantastic, the vocals are so beautiful, and I basically cried the whole movie through. The acting was fantastic, you definitely should go see Les Miserables.

Les Miserables (2012) How can you not love this film?

    by pippop

I have seen the Broadway Show 4 times. I have seen the road show in Philly 3 times. Every version is different and every one in its own right is beautiful and moving and wonderful entertainment. The film version is also unique and wonderful. It is new and vital and stunning in it's production values. Ann Hathaway steals the show. Loved it!

    Different format/different interpretation

It's amazing how differently the same story comes across when presented in a different format. I've read the book, seen the play and now the movie. Each has something unique to offer. The story is compelling in any genre, and while I personally enjoyed the roadshow the best, I did enjoy the movie. I think the movie actors who are cinema professionals did an outstanding job with the character portrayals. I thought Anne Hathaway especially brought a depth of character to Fontine that you wouldn't find in the roadshow. With Russell Crowe as Jabert, he came across as much more human than the strict "legal automaton" that one usually imagines. That said, the road show are cast not only for their acting abilities, but for their voices. If you are expecting the same quality of musicianship, you might be a little disappointed. It's a trade, but again, one worthy of making. I think the best thing about the movie is that it brings the timeless story of "Les Mis" to the masses.

    Catwoman, Gladiator, and Wolverine!!

    by senrabe

I was very impressed!! I am not a "musical" movie person. However, this was amazing! First, I had no idea Russell Crowe and Hugh Jackman could sing so well. Secondly, to be able to act and sing simultaneously and flawlessly...wow! As for Anne Hathaway, she should get an Oscar. She sang beautifully and with such raw emotion. I was totally surprised...I went as a Christmas gift to my wife, but I was the one who was apparently on Santa's "nice" list. Enjoyed the movie immensely!!

    One of my Favorites!

The actors in this film are fantastic!!! I have always loved the stage productions of Les Mis. It was nice to see it on screen.. I gained a much better comprehension of the story than I had before.
    Beautiful cinematography!
    Beautiful music. Beautiful story.
A great movie to see over the holidays!!
Not a move for small children.... (long, and violence in some scenes, but )good for teens through adults.

Les Mis fans, go see this movie

A phenomenal presentation of what is already a great story with great music. Hugh Jackman will blow you away in the first 10 minutes and Anne Hathaway should win an award. Not all of the characters and singing are as strong as what you might find in a stage production, but the presentation of the story and the character portrayals are dynamite.

If you liked the stage production you'll generally like the movie

The movie did have flaws. Les Mis is all about the message wrapped in a spectacular sound track. The weakest part of the movie, however, was the inability of the main protaganists (Hugh jackman as Jean Val Jean and Russell Crow especially as Javert) to deliver the voices that are needed to carry the compelling music. Without that, it's just another drama. Fans of the stage show will generally overlook the shortcoming although probably leave the theatre unfulfilled. I'm not so sure about the casual moviegoer. A further problem is the incessant closeups, although I understand that they were necessary to block out the boom mikes that were needed to record the live singing during filming. All in all, a Go to See, but don't expect to be overwhelmed.

    Oscar for best everything....

While musicals never win best picture, Les Miz should win for everything else! Best actor,
best supporting actress and most incredible cinematography. I loved every minute. At the end
the whole audience applauded wildly. In one word.....STUNNING!

    Les Miserables

Although the movie theater was full, I had never been in such a quiet, still environment. We were all awestruck. This was not a movie, it was an experience. We laughed. We cried. The beauty of it all. At the ending, the audience gave it a standing ovation!

Even with all of its imperfections, it's a must see!

    by

I've seen the live musical a few times so I was really nervous about the musical! Without ruining anything, it was phenomenal! Yes, Russell Crowe was not the best singer, but everyone else made up for it. Yes, the same camera angles were used over and over, but the costume and set designs made up for it. Moral of the story: Accept the imperfections and recognize the beauty of the movie.

    A Valiant Effort

I have to preface this review by saying I am a huge fan of this musical. It is my absolute favorite, and I have seen it countless times on tour, on Broadway and regionally-big theaters and small. The film reminded me of one of my favorite staged productions which was in a small theater in the round. Hard to imagine if you have not seen it, but being so close to the actors and in such an intimate setting provided a much more intense experience emotionally. The film succeeds on this level, with the right amount of agnst and emotion, particularly in Hathaway's big number, "I Dreamed A Dream", and Redmayne's "Empty Chairs at Empty Tables". Not a dry eye in the house. Where the film was less successful was in the rest of its casting. Big names sell movies, but did Les Miserables need this when millions upon millions world-wide have seen and love this show? Crowe was awful, Jackman strained, Seyfried-why? Also, where was the gorgeous score? It never seemed to get off the ground.

    Very Much Enjoyed

I think the cast was amazing and the music itself was great. Only negative comment I can make is it was more an opera than a musical with consistent music and singing. Since the songs are largely based around the same three or four songs it could have used a little more spoken to break it up. Overall through it really sits with you and I recommend it.

    Les Miserables 2012)

A thrill. I give it an 8 out of 10. Every lead was terrific: Hugh Jackman, Russell Crowe (who can sing!) were a perfect pairing. Eddie Redmayne (as Marius) has a great voice and presence. Samantha Barks (as Eponine) knocked me over with her fine voice and beauty. I think Anne Hathaway?s dramatics could have toned down a little, but she was good. The entire cast was terrific.
Criticism: A couple of songs and events that were in the play and original story were left out. They were relevant, and I missed them. The opening setting was overdone, the costumes and makeup a bit over the top re the poor and wretched.
