Good But 1.camera work almost ruined it and 2. PG-15!

    by maritdw

Fabulous, BUT... ~~~Music was surprisingly good -coming from a die hard Les Mis fan. Acting was excellent. Costumes were good. The staging was nice. Story was exceptional -change your life- kind of story, as usual. Characters were for the most part very believable.~~~
The camera work was terrible. Almost ruined the movie! They shot it in a stylized format with very short depth of field - backgrounds blurry and directs your eyes where they want you to see. However, they missed. Short depth of field too short and with moving subjects? the closeups were out of focus about half of the time. Seriously! Why pay $10 for a movie when they don't have any of their face in focus? Not even one eye? VERY DISTRACTING! Also, they used wide angle lenses several times that distorted the faces too much. ~~~The vulgarity, and sex scene were too much. The violence was strong. Too much for a young teen.~~~Truer to the book than the musical - a little. good overall. See, but with caution.

    Les Miserables

Definately a "must go". A most amazing production. Others have complained about the use of actors as singers as opposed to the usual use of singers as actors but, to me, the imperfections in the vocals added a touch of humanity and realism to the film.

    Catwoman, Gladiator, and Wolverine!!

    by senrabe

I was very impressed!! I am not a "musical" movie person. However, this was amazing! First, I had no idea Russell Crowe and Hugh Jackman could sing so well. Secondly, to be able to act and sing simultaneously and flawlessly...wow! As for Anne Hathaway, she should get an Oscar. She sang beautifully and with such raw emotion. I was totally surprised...I went as a Christmas gift to my wife, but I was the one who was apparently on Santa's "nice" list. Enjoyed the movie immensely!!

    Simply Amazing

    by

I'd unfortunately never had the opportunity to see this on the stage, so admit that I have no comparisons. Coming into it as simply someone who has heard and loved the music of it though I was absolutely struck speechless by this movie and am pondering going to see it again while it's still in the theatres.

    Oscar for best everything....

While musicals never win best picture, Les Miz should win for everything else! Best actor,
best supporting actress and most incredible cinematography. I loved every minute. At the end
the whole audience applauded wildly. In one word.....STUNNING!

    Godly Movie

I was surprised and touched, to the core, by the prayerful moments in this movie. The acts of forgiveness were beautiful.
I'm so glad I went to see it and want to see it again very soon!

A classic, beautifully portrayed on the big screen. A poignant story that demonstrates the complexity of being "right" and how it can manifest itself differently in different people. In the end, it is the power of GRACE that wins the day. MUST GO!

    Les Miserables

Absolutely excellent! The most brilliant casting was of Coln Wilkinson as the Bishop; he was the original Jean Valjean on stage. The scenery was spectacular portraying the darkness of Victor Hugo's epic novel. The voices were all very strong. The children's voices, Cozettte & Gavroche, were amazing, as were the adult Cozette and Marius. Hugh Jackman did a great portrayal of Jean Valjean and Anne Hathaway's Fontine was excellent. The only weakness would be that of the voice of Russell Crow as Javert though he played the part beautifully. We will see this again and again!

If you liked the stage production you'll generally like the movie

The movie did have flaws. Les Mis is all about the message wrapped in a spectacular sound track. The weakest part of the movie, however, was the inability of the main protaganists (Hugh jackman as Jean Val Jean and Russell Crow especially as Javert) to deliver the voices that are needed to carry the compelling music. Without that, it's just another drama. Fans of the stage show will generally overlook the shortcoming although probably leave the theatre unfulfilled. I'm not so sure about the casual moviegoer. A further problem is the incessant closeups, although I understand that they were necessary to block out the boom mikes that were needed to record the live singing during filming. All in all, a Go to See, but don't expect to be overwhelmed.

    All thumbs up

I enjoyed the Broadway production, and the PBS specials that showcased Les Mis, and I was not expecting the movie to be anywhere near as entertaining as the Broadway production. I was wrong. This movie exceed my expectations. There were some gaffes and characters that I thought were poorly cast but in the end, entertainment at its finest. Anne Hathaway does deserve the kudos she has been getting for her role in this film.

Epic movie. Les Mis is a must see even for non-musical fans.

There were no weak spots for me. Started strong and built steadily. Hugh Jackman owned the role. Big fan of the original stage production and this delivered. Everything I could hope for. Kudos to the entire talented cast. Every one. Brutal and moving. I heard lots of sniffling by the end.

    Beautiful Musical & Story

If you love musicals, you must see this. I was amazed at the voices of the stars of the movie. It was moving and depressing and uplifting at the same time.

    disappointing

I knew Russell Crowe wasn't going to be a strong singer from the trailers, but I was surprised at how disappointing Hugh Jackman's singing voice sounded. It was very nasally. And he could not pull off the best number of the show "Bring Him Home". And I'm not sure why the director felt the need to have strange camera angles and have the camera up everyone's noses the whole time. Too much cutting back and forth between close-ups. Very distracting. Overall, still love the music (and part of my problem is that I have the amazing original Broadway cast recording in my brain), but the next time I see Les Miz will be on the stage.

    Excellent adaptation

At the end of the movie, when the credits started, a majority of the audience spontaneously applauded. It was that good. I was pleasantly surprised. EXCELLENT use of the medium to show what you had to imagine or simply didn't think about during the stage production.
