    Different format/different interpretation

It's amazing how differently the same story comes across when presented in a different format. I've read the book, seen the play and now the movie. Each has something unique to offer. The story is compelling in any genre, and while I personally enjoyed the roadshow the best, I did enjoy the movie. I think the movie actors who are cinema professionals did an outstanding job with the character portrayals. I thought Anne Hathaway especially brought a depth of character to Fontine that you wouldn't find in the roadshow. With Russell Crowe as Jabert, he came across as much more human than the strict "legal automaton" that one usually imagines. That said, the road show are cast not only for their acting abilities, but for their voices. If you are expecting the same quality of musicianship, you might be a little disappointed. It's a trade, but again, one worthy of making. I think the best thing about the movie is that it brings the timeless story of "Les Mis" to the masses.

    Les Miserables

I see a lot of movies -- a lot -- and I can honestly say, with much enthusiasm, that this is the best movie I've ever seen. I loved it. Recommend it highly. Can't say enough good things about the cast, the music, the songs, the scenery, costuming. I can't stop thinking about this movie. Bravo.

A classic, beautifully portrayed on the big screen. A poignant story that demonstrates the complexity of being "right" and how it can manifest itself differently in different people. In the end, it is the power of GRACE that wins the day. MUST GO!

    Beautiful Musical & Story

If you love musicals, you must see this. I was amazed at the voices of the stars of the movie. It was moving and depressing and uplifting at the same time.

Excellent adaptation from the theater version!

I'm just a casual fan of Les Mis (my wife is the fanatic), but I really enjoyed this movie. I personally felt that I picked up so much more about the story this time around vs the few times I've seen it on stage. The reason is I , was able to see the characters up close, and see the action in greater detail on the big screen. Because of this, I really felt like I was there, and understood the characters range of emotions on a more personal level, compare to sitting 40 rows back at the stage version and not being able to see the detail as well.

The sets are amazing, the songs are very well true to the theatrical versions, and overall, the entire production is very moving. Yes, I'm a guy, and not embarrassed to say that I did tear up a number of times (never really did that in the theater versions).

Definitely glad I went to see this, and would consider seeing it again. Go see it, even if the theater version isn't your thing. You won't be disappointed.

Great acting and Cheaper than a Broadway Theater Ticket

Hugh Jackman and Anne Hatheway were incredible and convincing. For Russell Crowe, the singing was too much. If you have never seen this classic muical, now is your chance. Remember it is a musical and the entire movie is sung by its actors.

This movie is absolutely AWESOME! The cast is fabulous, I was particularly impressed with Eddie Redmayne as Marius. Hugh Jackman, Russell Crowe were fab as the two male leads additionally Sacha Baron Cohen and Helene Bonham Carter were extremely good as the Thernadiers!

It is definitely a MUST SEE - 5 Stars.

    Fantastic

The music is fantastic, the vocals are so beautiful, and I basically cried the whole movie through. The acting was fantastic, you definitely should go see Les Miserables.

Miz is not a movie as much as it is an experience

Overlooking all its flaws, I was totally engrossed in the music, story, and characters.

Early on I totally bought into the work as an experience rather than just as a film. As a film it has problems - as an experience it was completely fulfilling and touched me deeply.

I was blown away by Anne and Hugh ... and while Russell's vocal performance has been criticized, he portrayed Javert with a sense of deep unhealed pain in his eyes - something most fail to give this otherwise sinister, dogmatic character.

    Simply Amazing

    by

I'd unfortunately never had the opportunity to see this on the stage, so admit that I have no comparisons. Coming into it as simply someone who has heard and loved the music of it though I was absolutely struck speechless by this movie and am pondering going to see it again while it's still in the theatres.

3 hours of mediocre music and nonsensical sung dialogue

Where to begin? Some of the actors were really good(Anne Hathaway, Amanda Seyfried, Samantha Barks) but mostly they just were terrible (notably Hugh Jackman and Russel Crowe). Sadly, the good actors are only given a few minutes sporadically to shine while we're stuck with the horrible performances of the rest for most of the film. While the cinematography was incredible, the storyline is just stupid. The characters are never developed and we're left with more questions than answers. While most of the audience was crying at the end, I just can't understand WHY Jean Valjean dies, which makes it pointless. Also, let's take a minute to ponder why these actors have British accents (notably the little boy's cockney accent), while the story is supposed to take place in FRANCE! Different country folks. All in all, I'd give this a miss. The only incredible moment is Anne Hathaway's "I dreamed a dream" and sadly that happens 40 minutes into the film, leaving 2 mindless hours....

Some of the Drama is lost...

    by mcsarge

A great movie, but I have found that some of the incredible drama of the original stage production was lost because the performers, though pretty good, are not good enough singers for the material. I wish they had enlisted real singers, not famous actors for the roles. With the exception of Fontine, Marius and Cozette (both young and old) the rest of the cast was good, but not great. If they had real singing talent on the screen this would have been one of the greatest movies of all time. Using established talent, though safe, made it fall far short of what I was expecting.

    An amazing story of redemption

Set aside the fact that this is one of the best musicals to be made probably ever, this movie has one of the best plats and stories, and will make you and want to stand up and cheer by the end. The music in the film in outstanding and the singing is the most realistic of any musical I have ever seen! The actors have out done themselves, especially Hugh Jackman and Anne Hathaway. The movie is a bit long, but the plot does not drag on and the musical numbers help it to carry on. If you are a fan of musicals, you will love it! If you are not a fan of musicals, you might still want to see it just for the plot, despite all the singing.

    Every As;ect was superb

    by

Acting, Singing, Costumes, Make up, setting out standing. I've seen the musical on stage many times, this film magnifies the emotional content of the piece due to the close ups of teh actors.
