Frankenweenie is delightful
I took my 8 year old son and his buddy to see Frankenweenie, and I thought it was great. The boys definitely liked it but it wasn't their all-time favorite. My son thought it would have been better in color, and I tried to tell him about director Tim Burton referencing old-fashioned horror movies like Frankenstein, Bride of Frankenstein, Godzilla, etc. I think as he gets older and sees some of the classic horror movies, he'll appreciate Frankenweenie more. But for kids raised on whiz-bang, constant-motion, rainbow-colored CGI films, this is visually understated.
This might be a bit scary for very young children, but for elementary school-age kids and up it's terrific. The voice work is definitely non-threatening and loving in the main family, to offset the grim idea of a boy resurrecting a dog corpse. But the supporting roles play as a who's who of great horror voices of the past, channeling Vincent Price, Boris Karloff, Peter Lorre, etc. I'll definitely see again when it's on dvd!
