A story we didn't know in the midst of an adaptation of what we did.

    by Nedzo

This is a wonderful telling of a story none of us knew at the time absent the scent of failure and malaise enveloping the U.S. when it happened. The failed Special Ops mission to spring the Embassy hostages is alluded to, but only prior to its failure. Those sad, wilted yellow ribbons on everything then (and for months after Reagan's election) are evocative to those of us who experienced it - inexplicable absent an introduction to Tony Orlando and Dawn's "mega-hit" to the younger members of the audience. A Shawn Colvin "Viva Las Vegas"-like treatment of "Tie A Yellow Ribbon 'round the Old Oak Tree" would have been the perfect touch.

The cast is stellar, though few break much of a sweat in their roles. The end titles with pictures of those portraying and portrayed shows how well the casting agency did with the sole exception of Ben Affleck's character "Antonio Mendez.

politics acutally makes an interesting movie

    by

Even though I agree with much of the politics behind films (i.e. liberal) most politically slanted films have been boring. Argo was an exception. It was amazing. Even knowing what the end result of the mission I was still on the edge of my seat. Affleck did an incredible job creating tension when the outcome was already known. Goodman and Arkin were the highlight characters and showed why they are true greats. Makes me want them to do a buddy move together.

    Great movie!

I really enjoyed this movie. Great actors! Awesome story! I saw Ben Affleck in a different light. But the story and history behind this are what made the movie so great!

    argo

a true life rescue adventure, well-written and acted.
ben affleck does a good job as director and actor.
it's amazing that it's based on what really happened.
shows the "best bad idea" is better than no idea at all
sadly it shows a bloodthirsty regime in iran was followed by ..a bloodthirsty theocracy.

    ARGO

White knuckles and breath held as I waited to see if they'd pull off this crazy charade to rescue the 6 Americans. Fascinating and well done.

    spellbinding movie

    by

Both my husband and I liked this movie. If you lived through the Iranian crisis, this movie is absolutely fascinating. It is definitely a movie for adults, not kids, because of all the cursing.

    Argo

    by

From the start, this film is a blast! Carefully crafted and gripping. Based on true story about six people who in midst of the Iranian Revolt back in '79, hideout in Canadian embassy until they get rescued by a CIA agent. Not gonna tell you the whole story, but it?s fantastic! Kudos to Ben Affleck who was director and lead actor. Many studios turned down this film. I bet they?re kicking themselves! Go see it!

    First Rate Thriller

It's pretty impressive when a director can keep you on the edge of your seat through the whole movie even though you already know how it's going to turn out. Ben Affleck is really coming into his own as a director and this is a fantastic movie. Do yourself a favor and GO SEE IT!!

    Well done Mr. Affleck!

Having known many ex-pats and embassy staff members in that era, I thought the film did a good job of portraying the time period and the ex-pat culture and a great job of demonstrating how otherwise ordinary people can occasionally stretch way beyond their comfort level to get something done. Another movie where knowing the outcome in advance didn't diminish the impact.

    Excellent story very well told

    by mfsheff

Argo is very well done. A little too political to start with but then moves along well. Great acting especially by Alan Arkin and Bryan Cranston. Very much worth seeing. Affleck has come into his own as director.

    Filled with Hollywood embellished suspense.

As previous reviews state: Acting and suspense levels are good, but the over-all story has been given the Hollywood treatment of bigger booms and closer calls to a point of silliness. Unfortunate, for a movie touted for it's depiction of giving the "true story" Argo has traded truth & fact for explosions and car chase scenes. The story is much to slow to be considered as Action/Adventure, so it misses the mark there as well.
Over-all, Argo is worth seeing, but not worth putting up with theater-prices, kicked-seats cell-phones & babies. - Watch this one at home.

    Loved it!

This was a great suspenseful movie, and even though I knew how it ended, it was still a great story, knowing most of it was true.

Argo - a great picture of the American Spirit

I was very moved with the story of Argo and its tribute to the courage of the American and Canadian people who believed that doing what was right is more important than thinking of their own personal well being -

It made me very proud to be an American -

Our audience was packed with every seat taken and clapped upon the conclusion vigorously -

What a quality product from Ben Affleck and his team - Thank you Ben,

    BB

    Really Brought Back Memories

    by

I was in high school at the time of the Iran Hostage Crisis. I remember the news Canada has closed their embassy and had smuggled six Americans out of the country. Argo explains how it was actually a CIA operative who with the help of people from Hollywood devised a plan to make a fake movie and make Iran believe they were a film crew looking for location and were able to get them out. It was a movie that kept my attention throughout the two hours and I think Ben Affleck did a great job directing it. It was a thriller with a sense of humor and I'd recommend it highly.

    Argo

A well developed story line based on a true story of the Iran hostage crisis in 1980. There is a noticeable anti-Shah, pro-Ayatollah opening which I found offensive as an American, but the rest of the story was devoid of any political agenda.
