The knot in my stomach never left

After the opening sequence, the theater I was in fell into the kind of empty silence you feel at funerals. You almost didn't want to see the train wreck of American history you knew you were about to witness...

If you are old enough to remember the hostage taking, the memories this movie conjures in the opening sequences are nearly visceral, and it never lets up. Argo fills in a thousand memory gaps and another hundred backstories you never knew about. And in places the dialogue hysterical.

But make no mistake, Argo takes no prisoners--it will replay in your head repeatedly. Well worth the money, time, and emotional energy.

Should be nominated for Best Editing. Some great visual story telling. Affleck really kept it moving.

    Good movie, but not great.

    by

Argo was entertaining, but I don't think it was The Best Picture of 2012. It was entertaining, but wasn't very suspenseful, considering the subject matter. Even a scene in a bazaar, where all the Americans were surrounded by Iranians, didn't convey that much of a sense of dread and fear. Maybe it was because I knew everything came out okay in the end, but I would only rate this movie a 7 or 8 on a 1-10 scale.

    Argo

Even knowing the real life outcome of this story, the on screen portrayal was as riveting, suspenseful and overwhelmingly satisfying as any fictional story could possibly have been. It was like watching the actual events in the same real time sequence, and anxiety, that I vividly remember when they actually occurred.

    See this movie!

    Argo

It's set during the Iranian hostage crisis of the late1970s. Seems that when the mob broke into the embassy, six workers slipped out and escapted to the home of the Canadian ambassador. Ben Affleck plays a CIA agent who specializes in getting people out of the country in these situations. The only plot he can come up with is that they're scouting a site for a really schlocky sci-fi film. His boss describes it as "the best bad idea we've got." I assumed they'd all get away -- otherwise, they wouldn't have made a movie about it. But it's still heart-pounding.

    I remember this ...

    by NWCL123

Is this a Hollywood version of what really happened? Uh, Yes. Ben Affleck knows what is needed to make people come to see a movie. Is it important to see? Also, very much Yes. I remember being 9 or 10 when this happened. it was a big and serious event. It was great to be able to go see the movie and know that the base was factual and you get some history.

I would definitely recommend this. Go wanting to be educated and moved. Don't go to be entertained, it isn't that type of a movie. It does entertain (thanks to the Hollywood version), but that isn't why you should go.

    Argo

Argo stayed pretty much true to the actual events that transpired regarding the 6 Americans that made it safely out of the US Embassy in Tehran. A lot of the footage was spot on to the orignal pictures and film of the time that this whole incident went down. Much to my surprise the 2 hour movie seemed more like an hour long movie it was that action packed and edge of your seat intensly gripping.

One of the best films of the year!

That's right; you read it correctly! Of course I'm biased. I love the genre drama, for one, but I'm also a "historiphile," (a lover of history). The film is quite interesting how to get six Americans out of Iran during the the takeover of the American Embassy in 1979-80. Truth is stranger than fiction - and "Argo" definitely qualifies! Now I can look back and say how "Argo" the movie, was a cover to get those six Americans out - with the brave support of the Canadian Ambassador! Truly, thank you Canada! A true neighborly friend north of us! Oh, and thank you Ben Affleck for bringing this story to the silver screen! There was applause at the end!

    ARGO

I loved it, everyone should go see this movie. This is the best acting from Ben Afflect I have ever seen. I was on the edge of my seat and my eyes were teary at the end of the film. Very well made and it was even funny at times. Alan Arkin and the rest of the cast was excellent. I see movies quite a lot this was definitely one of the best movies I have ever seen.

    Great Movie

    by

Argo was a very good movie. It was interesting in the fact that I knew what the outcome was going to be before I saw the movie and I was at the end thinking hurry up they are going to catch them. When a movie can get me to think something else besides the out come that I know will happen, that is a great movie. Acadamy award for Ben Afflick for acting or directing.

    ARGO...a MUST Go see

    by kane2

True history of this century. Memorable, honest, real. Excellent casting. I was on the edge of my seat through entire movie. I knew the outcome, but didn't know the details. Felt the emotions of the individuals involved in this ordeal. ARGO is a MUST GO see.

    ARGO

This was such a well done movie. it's one of the best we have seen in a long time. The acting and directing were superb with a story that needed to be told. At the end of the movie, there was a silence in the theater like none I have experienced. It was so impactful everyone just sat and didn't move until the credits were completed. Ben Afleck certainly deserves consideration not only for Oscar's best director/producer but also for best actor.

Perfect blend of suspense, action and story!

    by Lora724

My husband, daughter and I saw Argo last night. I remember the Iran hostage crisis in 1980, but this movie, in light of current political conditions in the region, really hits home. Ben Affleck does a fantastic job of creating a storyline that stays relevant to the truth and keeps you in the edge of your seat! Impressive! Love John Goodman and the others as well. Superb casting.

    Argo

I didn't know the story already -- so it came as a complete surprise -- even though I remember living through the Iran hostage crisis. I was on the edge of my seat for the whole movie. I highly recommend it.

    Great Movie!

Even though it is based on history, we were drawn into the drama and were on the edges of our seats throughout. Well acted and directed. Make sure to stay for the credits.

    Rip-roaring historical fiction

This movie reminds me of others that were "based on a true story" -- especially one connected to a well-known historical event. I was an adult during the Iranian hostage crisis, so I was interested in the film for that reason. But the film is also extremely well-done: good acting all around; gripping plot tension; even a few funny lines. The movie also successfully satirizes both the movie industry and the way the White House and CIA make decisions (very topical these days!). Probably not a short-list candidate for the "best picture" Oscar, but a very engrossing couple of hours. Well worth the price of admission, even with popcorn thrown in!
