Comedy, Action, Suspense, Romance All Packed in One!

This was a really entertaining movie and definitely spurred a great crowd experience in the theater! If you just want a great night to relax and be entertained this is a great movie for men and women of any age. I was really surprised at how funny it was yet still captured the enchantment and intrigue of all gangster/mob movies.

Nothing special, more cringe moments than a chick-flick

Alright, so we've got Ryan Gosling the 'ladykiller', typecast as usual, tangentially related to the story of Mickey, but doesn't actually do much besides sweep Emma Stone off her feet.

You know how in a chick-flick or a "romantic-comedy" how there are moments that make you shift in your seat with uncomfortableness? Moments that are too cheesy for real life, usually, and this movie has PLENTY.
Seriously, someone's last words are a quote that was already said in the movie "Remember, shoot where he's going to be, not where he is." *shoots* *saves josh brolin's life* *dies*.
Also, Ryan Gosling (Jerry)'s best friend gets killed. Literally murdered in front of Emma Stone. She runs up to him later "HE FOUGHT LIKE HELL". And suddenly it's never important again that OH WAIT JERRY'S BEST FRIEND IS DEAD. But he doesn't care because, well, poor acting I guess.
Basic, basic filmmaking with huge names to soften the blow of a poorly directed, basic american "feel good"

    Fun night out

Gangster Squad is all out fun with incredible performances from most of the cast!! Personally I don't understand the draw of one of them, but I'm sure the Nicolas Sparks fans see it and while being the weakest, he manages to keep close. Josh Brolin, Sean Penn and Emma Stone easily carry this film. And the supporting cast is amazing!!! The story seems a little choppy at times like things were edited out for one reason or another, but if you're not expecting King Lear, this is a great night out!!

    An Exciting, Intense Surprise!

    by jzactor

What I expected this film to be and what it is are very different. I was very pleasantly suprised by this film. The great actors in it raise it to a deeper emotional level than most good guy cops against wicked gangster films. Each of the star actors makes specific, distinct character behavioral and emotional choices which increase the intensity of the script which is very simple and basic. We have seen it before in many films but in this one the cast raises it up so it was impossible for me not get deeply emotionally involved in the film and the characters. Most memorable is the horrible violence and reminders of people who have been and still are cut down and give their lives to fight for the right and good. Sean Penn is incredibly, disturbingly intense making his bad guy easy to despise. The vivid colors used and dark noir quality made this an exciting, intense & disturbing experience, which suits the fact that this war reallly did happen!

    Gangster Squad

    by OFLYONS

Wife and I loved the film. It's a great get out for the night film. Lot's and lot's of action and of course you know which good guy is going to get killed. They paid a lot of attention to period detail in this film. They even made sure the right sounds went with each gun ex(BAR ,Thompson SMG, smeischer smg, shotguns etc.

    Mr

    Too much violence.
If I would have to pick which mob movie was better on the west coast between The Gangster Squad and Chinatown with Jack Nicklas and Fay Danaway, I would pick Chinatown.

    Gangster Squad

GREAT movie! I was on the edge of my seat the whole time although the movie did have some comic book humor to it which was a welcome relief from the tension. I have new-found respect for LA. Very interesting, very entertaining movie. And the acting was superb - How could this film get passed over by the Oscars?

Great effects, nice story line, easy to follow

    by

This movie follows the same line as the television show, "Vegas". With just about the only law man in town that isn't corrupt trying to save the city from the mob (and corrupt judges and city officials) and a ragtag team of "good-guys" known as the "Gangster Squad" in support, the mob, of course, loses. Story line is well written and easy to follow. Characters are kept to a minimum to keep down the confusion and stay true to the story. Special effects (gun play, explosions) were realistic and well placed. the "matrix" type slow motion was unnecessary but fun. I expect to see this on ppv in two months. Overall a good movie.

    Exciting & Thrilling

This was a great movie. I'm not a Sean Penn fan but have to say he did an excellent job. If your looking for action this is the movie for you.

Formula? Sure, but a good one.

Everything in this movie has been done before, but rarely so well. While it loses a few originality points, it recovers them in cinematography, soundtrack, and proving again that Sean Penn really CAN act. Twenty minutes in, I had forgotten it was Sean; he BECAME Mickey Cohen, with enough force to convince even his most jaded detractors that he still wields the skills he brought to "Mystic River" ten years ago.
Josh Brolin acts like his father: well, but not outstandingly. His character had the potential for more depth and dimension, and, unless he was directed to play it simple, he missed the opportunity to tap into a more revealing portrayal.
Emma Stone is Emma Stone... 'nuff said. I'm sending a bottle of whiskey to the casting director for that choice.
Nick Nolte plays the part he was born for. I'm glad he's still in the game.
Ryan Gosling turns in another great performance. I'm keeping my eyes on him. I hope he learned from Sean.
    *Lots of brutal violence.
    7 of 10 stars.

    The 2013 Version of 'Untouchables'

    by

This was a great movie. It was action-packed and the plot was solid. Without the really epic details of past great gangster movies, 'Gangster Squad' was driven by a lot of weak dialogue and cheesy one-liners and the movie could've done without Ryan Gossling-this just wasn't his type of movie if you will. Overall, this was still a great movie with plenty of action and I enjoyed every moment of it.

    Good Entertainment

I didn't know anything about the realy Mickey Coen so didn't have any preconceived ideas. I saw the trailers so figured it would be a regular gangster movie which it fit the bill. There was alot of pretty graphic violence but that's part of the gangster era. The movie was pretty intense with a few cheesy lines along the way. I liked it and would recommend it -- but not kids.

    Great shoot 'em up film

Very good action movie very loosely based on the reality that the LAPD did take strong action to keep the Eastern Mobs from gaining a foothold in the City of Angels. Good acting, humor and plenty of action. Took my girlfriend's 70 year old mother along and she thoroughly enjoyed it. Fast paced action made it an enjoyable time at the movies.
