    Gangster squad

Decent film. The movie was supposedly based on real life events and I have no idea how accurate it was. Acting was good, for the most part. It was a bit over the top in many fight scenes and of course the industry made sure certain racial groups were represented in a favorable light.

    Compelling story, and characters

Go see it, it was one of those movies that keeps you on the edge of your seat. I was taken with the story of justice and good vs evil.

A TERIFFIC 40"S STYLE GANGSTER MOVIE

    by

This movie is loosely based on the xploits of the gangster era, on the west coast of the 1940"s...........if you enjoy good shoot in ups, and period cars clothes, and good looking women, dont miss this one........

Entertaining but could be so much more

I have been watching films long enough to know what to expect from a film like this. Very entertaining ( also violent) film but the story doesnt quite suck you in and even though all the players do a fine acting job you don't get to spend enough time with any one character to see any development. Overall an entertaining film if you want some great visuals with an easy to follow story but if youre looking for something more you wont find it here.

    Gangster Squad

What moved me to see this Gangster Squad is that it was based on a true story. And that it was about the Good Guys going after the Bad Guys.

It was violent, more violence than I am comfortable with, but the actors and leading actress were outstanding. Great scenes, brilliant, excellent movie.

Disappointing movie, beautiful but not very interesting.

My husband and I were both quite disappointed in "The Gangster Squad." We had hoped for a lot more. We thought it was a very good-looking movie; the actors, the beautiful vintage cars and the sets. It was predictable; lots and lots of gunfights, car crashes, shoot-em-ups, explostions, lots of leaking gasoline set afire with a lighter! A bunch of those -- lots and lots of of action. It was a dazzling movie, but not terribly interesting. Very little, if any character development.
Whoever made up Sean Penn as Dutch Shultz did a great job --

Very good movie! Tad bit violent, not for kids BUT a good movie. Line up of stars did the job very well...kept the movie interesting ,but predictable.

    What a cast of characters!

    by

I am not a gangster movie fan but this was a great movie. It had romance, it had a plot and it had good guys that went bad. Love Emma Stone and the cast of misfit cops sold the show. Sean Penn is great as Mickey Cohen, he plays the part to make it real. Go see this movie!

LOVERS OF A HIGH MORTALITY COUNT WILL BE SATISFIED WITH THE HUNT AND DEMISE OF MOBSTER MICKEY COHEN.

Vigilante brigade strives to rid Los Angles of its Jewish mobster, ?Mickey Cohen?; a plastic caricature by Sean Penn. It is 1949 and a corps of terrific actors comprise the ?squad?; they had to have had a riotous time making this ?B? movie about lawless LA and cops gone rogue, cauterizing Cohen?s notorious cabal of amoral thugs. If you are in the mood for a ?shoot ?em up?, good versus evil scenario ?Gangster Squad? satisfies the craving. This is the time of year when we are smothered with insufferable fluff; mindless violence (concur with filmmaker Charles Evered about the unnecessary, ubiquitous, ?mushrooming of mayhem?) vampire mania, a plethora of exorcist candidates, taunting, crippling comprehension; escapism at the remedial level...

    TWO & 1/2 STARS!!

Overall good, though a bit confused

    by westyle

This is a dark movie with humorous jokes, some great performances but then almost comic book fantasy like abandonment of reality. It's not Scorsese reality. It is fun though. Some very good acting, and lots of blood and action. Excellent wardrobe and set- the cars in this movie are amazing and everything true to the era.

I think Penn's character performance would have been better served in a more realistic setting, but nonetheless a fun time of a movie. Just expect something shot well and entertaining while not overly worried about realism or a true story. Think comic book.

    Gangster Squad

    by DMLIPKA

I attended with my wife and we both found the movie to be enjoyable. The 1940's wass a great time in our history and this was seen in how gansters ruled the cities.

I would recommend this movie to anyone except kids under 16.

    Loved it!

    by

Not a chick flick, but it DOES have Ryan Gosling! Really enjoyed the movie. Sean Penn is amazing. Tons of violence. The period clothes and sets were beautiful. This chick loved it.

    Next Generation's "Untouchables"

    by

I was pretty excited about "Gangster Squad" when I first saw the trailer. Great cast, I love Emma Stone, and the film noir feel was very intriguing. Not that I was let down, but it was a bit different than I was expecting. I thought it was going to be more along the lines of a "The Departed" but I could not help but think of "The Untouchables" throughout much of the film. The film's gore is a bit on the cheesy side and some of the camera work was very artistic and De Palma-esque. However, I enjoyed it a lot. As expected, the acting was great and is really balanced out when your supporting roles are Michael Pena, Giovanni Ribisi, Anthony Mackie and Robert Patrick, aka T-1000. It is a fun trip to the movies that is worth the price of admission, which is more than you can say about a lot of movies these days.

Stylish set design, a true story with pretty people, escapist entertainment

Enjoyed the movie, varied a bit from the book, which was written by an LA Times reporter with the help of the LATimes archives...kinda violent, especially in the opening "hit" when the rival mobster is dragged between 2 Cadillacs and torn in two....the end was a bit preachy, but overall the movie was really fun and interesting, The locations were pretty authentic, except for the Park Plaza Hotel interior which looked suspiciously like Union Station LA... catch the "old" 1940's postcards in the closing credits...the art direction is incredible.

A great movie for a cold rainy day or any day. Josh Brolin & Ryan Gosling are great together and Sean Penn makes a perfect gangster.
