    Best Gangster Movie Yet!

Action packed! The dramatic tension between the main players makes you hold your breath throughout the movie. Excellent script and direction- true to events and period! The best shoot-em-up since Pacino's Scarface! Great, believable character performances. Sean Penn plays Cohen as he was- sinister, smart, and without conscience. Bullets flying everywhere! Not for kids, or the faint of heart. A must see!!

    FANTASTIC!

We went & saw Ganster Squad last week & it was FANTASTIC! There were a few parts I had to close my eyes on (missing body parts), but it was a great story & I enjoyed the non stop action! Recommend!

Great movie, I really enjoyed it!

The critics are crazy. I guess they just don't like action movies. They can't all be Les Miserables or Lincoln. If you like a great shoot em up movie with lots of old cars, then this is for you. Don't miss it!

Great Movie! Action Packed Til the End!!!

This movie is action packed to the end, it has a few typical scenarios but that doesnt take away from the film at all. The best thing in my opinion is how they really fit the scenery with 1940s mob/crime mob scene. Nothing lacks at all in this film if you like mafia/action packed type films, forget the CRITICS review!

    Gangster Squad

Pointless violence and gore, and no real heart in the story. More like a cartoon. Sean Penn was ridicolous in his role of the villain, Mickey Coen. Too much shooting, and way too much gore. No empathy with any of the characters. I should ask for a refund.

Thanks for checking, but this is a bomb!!!!

    Gangster Squad

Went to see Gangster Squad because we were interested in the story line with the added bonus of a great cast....were we disappointed! Although violent and not for children, the script felt like it was written by a third grader (strike one). The stars, although appealing in theory, were either miscast or mis directed (strike two). Which may have just been the fault of the director who seem to not really know which direction he wanted to take the picture in....action, drama, or as it came across, comedy! Biggest disappointment, Sean Penn as Mickey Cohen. He portrayed him like a cartoon character (think Al Pacino in **** Tracey) instead of a larger than life colorful yet wicked personality. Even the adorable Emma Stone was more cute than Veronica Lake sultry (strike three)....Swing and a (big) miss!

    Awesome!

    by

In all my years of going to movies I've never once been excited enough to go to an midnight release of a movie but I just had to see Gangster Squad, & I liked it so much that I came out wanting to go see it again in theaters which once again I never do, Sean Penn makes the movie, he's just a bonafied bad *** with his portrayal of Micky Cohen, & the shootouts were well done & fun to watch, out of the "Gangster" films I've seen (Godfather Trilogy, Goodfellas, Scarface, Etc) this has to be #2 only behind Godfather which is my favorite, 4 out of 5 stars!

Great effects, nice story line, easy to follow

    by

This movie follows the same line as the television show, "Vegas". With just about the only law man in town that isn't corrupt trying to save the city from the mob (and corrupt judges and city officials) and a ragtag team of "good-guys" known as the "Gangster Squad" in support, the mob, of course, loses. Story line is well written and easy to follow. Characters are kept to a minimum to keep down the confusion and stay true to the story. Special effects (gun play, explosions) were realistic and well placed. the "matrix" type slow motion was unnecessary but fun. I expect to see this on ppv in two months. Overall a good movie.

    Okay

The directing was great, acting cinematography, blah, blah, blah. But what a movie comes down to is the story. When you make a film, you are trying to tell a story, and in this case, it was a bad one. I could see what was going to happen. I said it in my mind, and it literally happened (I won't say what, because that would spoil it). So I came out of the theater saying: "meh, it was OKAY." I would see things like Lincoln, Skyfall, Django Unchained, Argo, and (the best movie I have seen in a LONG time) The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey over this. But if you have seen all those movies and you want a bubblegum movie with a lot of action, sure see this. I wasn't too pleased with movie, but thought it was OKAY.

    Go see this film!

The reviews had not been great on this film, but don't believe them. The movie was a lot of fun and it had some great acting and action sequences. It was a really fun time at the movie

    Compelling story, and characters

Go see it, it was one of those movies that keeps you on the edge of your seat. I was taken with the story of justice and good vs evil.

    Gangster Squad

All actors wee fabulous!! This movie told a story from our past as well as was entertaining. I was pleased to see the accuracy of the props, from dinner ware, automobiles, store signs, clothing and language.

    Not much to it

Gangster squad is moderately entertaining. It is bullet ridden and angry and filled with tough talk. There really isn't much to it other than watching the beautiful Emma Stone bantering with Ryan Gosling which comprises the best parts the movie. In between these scenes there is nothing but tough sounding banter between Sean Penn and the Cops and guns firing with infinite bullets.

Fantastic movie. Leave your cerebrum at home and expect to have fun.

This movie appealed to me because of the historical perspective on Los Angeles (I'm an urban history/sociology freak), the classic cops vs robbers/cowboys vs indians/soldiers vs infidels story line, and the promise of great acting by Sean Penn, Ryan Gosling, and Josh Brolin. Not to mention that Emma Stone is a stone fox.

I have to say that this movie delivered in leaps and bounds on all fronts. The time period was reproduced beautifully, the cops & robbers story was very entertaining and at times gripping, and Sean Penn and the rest were other-worldly.

My only critique of the film comes from my background in Gender Studies, as the story highlights themes of white supremacist capitalist patriarchy (bell hooks), and my sensitivity to extreme violence. I closed my eyes at a few really violent parts of the film, and kept my ideals in tact by acknowledging and dismissing some themes. I found that I still really enjoyed the film, and will definitely purchase it when it goes to DVD.
