A Meaningful Drama? No. A Fun Popcorn Flick? Yes!
Critics don't have a lot of love "Gangster Squad", but it seems that it has a lot to do with the fact that they were expecting it to be more of a drama than the popcorn flick that it is.
If you compare a similar genre film like "LA Confidential" to "Gangster Squad", it would be like comparing Christopher Nolan's "Dark Knight" to Tim Burton's "Batman". Both are good, but one film aims to have their characters exist in a real world while the other film is more of an exaggeration of a real world. And even though this is based on a true story, "Gangster Squad" is the latter.
Once you accept that this movie is not trying to tell you a deep story about Mickey Cohen's reign as LA"s mob boss and that it simply aims to entertain you, you'll probably enjoy this film a lot more.
Personally, I'm not even a big fan of mafia films, but I found "Gangster Squad" to be a really entertaining movie with an excellent cast who give great, over-the-top performances. See it!
