    Very entertaining

    by

I really enjoyed the movie. The critics don't seem to like it much and it isn't too deep but it was fun - just what a movie should be!

    On a 1 to 10 scale its a 5 at best.

Supposed to based on the true story about Mickey Cohen but research on line does not support the movie's info. The actors did a good job of playing the parts, good job on the sets for time period. This gal is certainly getting her share of movie time even though she just isn't that attractive. Yes she can act which I guess is better than a hot dim wit Megan Fox playing the part.

    Great movie, great cast.

Loved the movie. Casting, acting, directing; all were big hits with this one. Really a great job recreating 1940s Los Angeles.
Leave your kids at home though, this is a night out with the wife movie.

    Bang-Bang-Bang-Bang-Bang-Bang Squad

A lightweight and laughably simplistic screenplay/plot/dialog patched together as a clumsy framework to feature gratuitous automatic gunfire and bloodletting. The inane opening drawn-and-halved scene set the tone for what followed. This is the type of irresponsibly senseless and graphically bloody violence that seeps into and feeds the suggestive subconscious of the silently disturbed. There was some redeeming entertainment value to be found in the fantastically detailed period interior and exterior backdrops, and in the Carmen Miranda musical number.

Not Much of a Story About Untouchable Thugs

    by pedsarq

Sean Penn overplays Mickey Cohen in an ineffective and ridiculous manner. His gang of thugs do things like pour acid on pretty women whenever Cohen believes he's being slighted. The movie basically establishes him as an untouchable thug from the beginning and doesn't do much else to explain his crimes or his racket, so we don't really know what's important to his operation. Josh Brolin plays the LAPD cop who gets commissioned (along with several other A-list stars) to take Cohen down, basically at all costs. Unfortunately, all that happens is the LAPD's gang of thugs disrupt Cohen's operation by going on a killing spree of their own. This movie is disjointed, has no real story, and lacks character development. In fact, each of the actors is so self-absorbed that we never get to care about or understand a single character. It's a mess that you should pass on. There isn't a single redeeming quality to this film, despite all of the talented actors.

Delicious Film Noir: **** Tracy With A License To Kill

James Brolin is at his best! Prepare yourself for two incredible hours of great acting and fun violence. Yes, it's a comic book, the real Mickey Cohen was nothing like the character Sean Penn portrays in the movie; at 66, Cohen died at home from a heart attack. Yes, Coen was quite a character, he survived several assassination attempts, including a bombing of his home in Brentwood, and a shooting on the Sunset Strip; although the movie suggests he was a psychopath in complete charge of Los Angeles; not so. Gangster Squad is inspired by real events. Yes, there was a real Gangster Squad, but the writer's inspiration runs extremely fast and loose with the facts, most of all, the endless, outrageous high-profile public violence, as depicted in the film, never happened. But forget reality, the movie is a thrill ride of **** Tracy with a license to kill. Emma Stone is tasty eye-candy but underutilized as a story line; she brings little to the story with the exception of looking amazing.

    Classic Gangster Movie

Before you go see Gangster Squad, it's highly recommended to Google Mickey Coen so you have an understand his background and career leading up to his move to LA. He worked for Capone before his planting roots in LA. The movie does not really refer to this but you will understand better his wanting to get into sports wagering. Plenty of action to keep you entertained. Good mix of characters and actors.

    Very entertaining!

This was a very good movie full of suspense, it could have been longer and done much better than it did. Overall a GREAT movie just wish it were longer and had more of a story in (even though the story was filling enough). I just wanted more of this movie and want to watch it again already

    Gangster Squad review

    by

I've heard a lot of good things abour this film since I saw the first trailer for it with "The Dark Knight Rises". Sean Penn is the scene stealer of the film. His portrayal of real-life gangster MickeyCohn was so impressive, it was like seeing a young Robert DeNiro in Once Upon A Time In America. The cast was also great; Josh Brolin, Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone are quite good in their roles. The director really made an effort in bring the Los Angeles of the late 1940's to life. I'm glad that the producrers decided not to use the scene from the early trailers that showed the police shooting from behind a movie screen; it was all too familiar with the infamous Aurora shooting. But this film is indeed worth seeing.

    Ganster Squad

Sean Penn gives a spectacular performance as a mob boss. This film is based on true events when the mob tried to take over L A in the late 1940's. The acting was excellent throughout the film and the storyline good. Two things to be aware of is a high dead body count and excessive cussing, including both the F and C word. I realize that the language fits the rolls of the stories content; but you should beware of it. I would still say go and see this film if only to see Sean Penn's performance.

    Gangsters and Water Pistols

This is a movie about the pressing need for gun control. The characters should have put away all their firearms and bored each other to death, instead of taking their dull roles out on the audience. This noise machine proves that it is easy to sleep through flat amateurish depictions of violence. The only thing parents need worry about is coming home late at night to find Gangster Squad showing on their TV and their baby-sitter snoring away peacefully.
