Just turn off your brain and enjoy

Take a bunch of square-jawed cops, add one scenery-chewing Sean Penn, give them Tommy guns and film noir lingo, disengage your higher brain functions and have fun. And when you've had your fill of blood, explosions, fistfights and power drills to the head, there's always Emma Stone to look at, wearing dresses so slinky that a Slinky will slink back up the stairs in shame.

There, I did it. I used variations of 'slink' three times in one sentence. That required more intellect that you'll find in 'Gangster Squad's entire script. But, hey, it's January, and you can't spend all of the next two months trying to catch every Oscar-nominated film for 2012 that you missed.

    Good B movie for today

better then I expected & Not to bad, entertaining, but at times a little to **** tracy for me. Over all was pretty cool. Fun to watch and see the action, sets, clothes and stuff from the 40s. The acting by some is a bit comic book at times. Some were better then that but not tom much.
Over all it was good to see on the big screen rather then rent or on demand even if some of the acting wasn't up to par.

    Eh.

This is a fun action movie, by no means a Departed or Goodfellas, etc. This movie is like watching a 1950's True Crime Stories comic book brought to life. Okay acting from everyone, semi-weak plot and next to no character development. Go see this if your looking for an action flick, nothing more.

    Still born prodigy

    by grrbach

A promising cast (mightily uplifted by Sean Penn's oscar-worthy performance) and a few moments of enrapturing style can't make up for two, terminal flaws?the most inconsistent A-list script of the past ten years and direction that's competent only when the guns are blazing.

Is it a waste of time? No. But don't expect the gangster/mob film classic the trailer or the movie critic shills promise.

So much potential, so much disappointment.

    Thoroughly enjoyed it...

This movie wasn't really on our list to see, but we ended up there based on a good show time. Glad that we did. It had great action and well placed laughs. The acting was great and you were at least a bit invested even with the characters that weren't very central or well fleshed out. Have to say, we had no expectations going in, but we loved it.

    Loved it!

    by

Went to this movie with my husband with few expectations because of the general description. I was pleasantly surprised. It is violent but nothing out of the ordinary from a "gangster" film. I thought Josh Brolin, Ryan Gosling, and Sean Penn were excellent in this movie. Emma Stone looked beautiful, as always. I would recommend this film to friends.

Great Movie! Action Packed Til the End!!!

This movie is action packed to the end, it has a few typical scenarios but that doesnt take away from the film at all. The best thing in my opinion is how they really fit the scenery with 1940s mob/crime mob scene. Nothing lacks at all in this film if you like mafia/action packed type films, forget the CRITICS review!

    Next Generation's "Untouchables"

    by

I was pretty excited about "Gangster Squad" when I first saw the trailer. Great cast, I love Emma Stone, and the film noir feel was very intriguing. Not that I was let down, but it was a bit different than I was expecting. I thought it was going to be more along the lines of a "The Departed" but I could not help but think of "The Untouchables" throughout much of the film. The film's gore is a bit on the cheesy side and some of the camera work was very artistic and De Palma-esque. However, I enjoyed it a lot. As expected, the acting was great and is really balanced out when your supporting roles are Michael Pena, Giovanni Ribisi, Anthony Mackie and Robert Patrick, aka T-1000. It is a fun trip to the movies that is worth the price of admission, which is more than you can say about a lot of movies these days.

    Okay

The directing was great, acting cinematography, blah, blah, blah. But what a movie comes down to is the story. When you make a film, you are trying to tell a story, and in this case, it was a bad one. I could see what was going to happen. I said it in my mind, and it literally happened (I won't say what, because that would spoil it). So I came out of the theater saying: "meh, it was OKAY." I would see things like Lincoln, Skyfall, Django Unchained, Argo, and (the best movie I have seen in a LONG time) The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey over this. But if you have seen all those movies and you want a bubblegum movie with a lot of action, sure see this. I wasn't too pleased with movie, but thought it was OKAY.

    Surprising!!!!!

I went into this movie not expecting much besides a typical action movie. I was very surprised at how funny it was as well it was. Overall I would recommend this movie to anyone.

    FANTASTIC!!

THIS WAS SUCH A GREAT MOVIE OR SHOULD I SAY FANTASTIC MOVIE! Emma Stone (favorite actress) did a amazing job but overall I liked Sean Penn as Mickey Cohen. He really won me over!

    PREDICTABLE BUT VERY GOOD

I enjoyed the movie very much. It was very predictable...you know, good vs evil and good saving the day but all in all, it was a pretty good movie. Sean Penn, whereas I love him and think he's awesome, seems to be way over the top with his hammy acting in the last few roles I've seen him play. This was no exception. It turns into a caricature and almost comes off as comical. But that's Sean, we've seen it before from him. Ryan Gosling, on the other hand, is just the most adorable thing on 2 feet. It's very violent - it's hard to believe that someone can take THAT kind of beating from a bare fist and still keep on fighting. But even tho I've said these things, it really is a pretty good movie and I think, if you like gangster flicks (which we do), this is a pretty good one worth seeing.

    Excellent! - All-Star Cast

    by Lsavan

The movie was better than the movie trailers depicted! The all-star actors were fabulous, including Sean Penn, Ryan Gosling, Josh Brolin, Michael Peña, Anthony Mackie, and Emma Stone. It was a slice of history, and to see how the mobster Mickey Cohen was taken down was nothing but pure violence. I am not suggesting the violence, guns, etc., were good however it surely leaves you wondering after the end of WWII how the violence after the war(s) brought men back to this country knowing how to fight. This movie although it appears glamorous is not.
The scenery was gorgeous including the era of Art Deco with the neon signs, high fashion, and clubs.

    Fascinating watch

    by

The movie was very well written, well casted and well down. Absolutely no boring moments. Might not be the best movie for younger kids. This is a must see.

What a waste of talent 'n money...

    by

Well, at least the trailer was kinda cool! This movie was lifeless and one-dimensional. HOW does that even happen with such elements attached... and such a great high concept!? I was SO disappointed. This was so bad, it was close to laughable. The audience reaction was the same throughout. This is a recommended no-go! You might not even bother when it comes available on DVD or free TV. Yeah, that weak.
