    Fabulous piece of history

I am steeped in US History, and even I learned some new things about the 13th amendment.
Fabulous acting, directing and of course writing. Doris Kearns Goodwin and Steven Speilberg are an amazing team.

    Awesome, Serious, but awesome.

    by

Daniel Day-Lewis once again wins the Oscar. This is a role designed for Award-bait but that doesn't make it any less of a accomplishment because Lincoln is such an iconic character and the performance was so subtle and expert. Sally Field was the weakest link in a all-around great ensemble cast with many faces you'll recognize who disappear into their characters.

This movie is a courtroom-like political drama. The script must have been 12 inches thick, the dialogue is just densely packed with wit, powerful monologues and era specific language. This is an All-American classic in the very best of ways and it will almost certainly be a staple for U.S. History classes for decades to come.

    Too long and slow moving

    by loara71

This movie could have been shown in 1/2 the time. It is too long and very slow moving.

The movie depicts the struggle to get 13th amendment into the constitution (slavery). It makes one think that the war between the states was ONLY about slavery which it wasn't. The civil war was about states rights in general with slavery being one of those southern rights.

Acting = just fair but if I had to pick the best actor it would have to go to Sally Field (Mary Todd)

Suggestion = stay home and don't waste the money. Wait until it is out on DVD than rent it. Don't buy it since I am sure there will be other Lincoln movies that will be better than this one.

    Lincoln

    by Idabon

This movie really speaks to our time and politics. It is so ironic how history repeats itself. The issues then were the Union itself and the end of slavery, two conflicting ideals and how Lincoln navigated both politically. Very fascinating. The acting was superb. Lewis will get his 3rd Oscar.

    Lincoln

    by thmsabl

It was a fair representation of the struggle it took to pass the 13 Amendment through the House. It was interesting to note that the scriptwriter actually had Lincoln acknowledge he circumvented the Constitution in unethical and possible illegal ways. This is not how Lincoln is ever dared portrayed. The movie also does a great job of depicting Lincoln as a talented and gifted politician, not the kindhearted "aw shucks" bumpkin history has relegated him to. I think the film did an admirable job showing how absolutely polarized people were on the issue of slavery, even amongst the states which stayed apart of the union, and how hard Lincoln had to fight even those in his own party to end it. Daniel Day Lewis was brilliant as Lincoln, and Sally Field managed to bring depth to a character long thought to be silly, vain, and weak. In short, it was a good movie and worth the money.

    Speilberg does it again

Just like Schindler's List....................You know the story - or so you think. Then you're so INTO the story you just go with it. DD Lewis and Sally Field at the top of their game!

lincoln was wonderful in every way

The film was done extremely well- lighting, cinematography, acting and plot. It is not an action movie so you have to pay attention ! All roles were well played. It gives one a chance to immerse him or herself in the times and the character of Lincoln. DDL was fantastic showed all sides of this fascinating man.

    Lincoln

In effect a big-screen, feel good and largely predictable rendition of story that we all know at least in broad outlines. I was not impressed by characterization of Lincoln -- having read Team of Rivals. There seemed to be little development or arc to the person, and most other characterizations were quite two dimensional. The battle scenes and hospital were about as graphic as one could imagine. The political jockeying to obtain votes seemed pretty reasonable. In summary, the movie is good entertainment and fodder for dinner or cocktail party conversation. I would not give it Oscar for best actor, compared with Beasts of Southern Wild.

    an okay movie ...

    by JWSofia

The acting and character portrayal were excellent. The sets and scenes conveyed a strong sense of the historical time and place. But the weighty polical dialog was monotonous and inescapable for two and half hours focusing on a mere 6 months of Lincoln's life. Also, I personally don't find the backroom machinations of politicians particularly entertaining or enlightening. And this movie also puts a positive veneer (spin) on corrupt political manipulation ... if "the cause is just" ...

    Makes Lincoln accessible

This is a very enjoyable film that displays the incredible performances of the lead actors.

If there is a weakness, the story over the enacting of the 13th amendment seems a bit melodramatic compared to the real conflict that waged on the battlefield. This makes the film slow at times, much like on of Lincoln's many stories.

In all, it made this historical man very accessible to people of our age.

    Lincoln

Portrayed Lincoln as a man who wanted to do something important that would have a lasting effect and showed how his quest was turned around by his opponents! Amazing one Representative said if the 13th Amendment passes, what next? Women voting!

    Just Like Being There

Lincoln was done so well that it made me feel like I was there.
    Daniel Day Lewis was amazing.
I believe there will be many Academy Award nominations for this film including Tommy Lee Jones and Sally Field.

    Lincoln

...from reviews and trailers I really was set to not like this movie. Thought two hours of conversations and dialog would just be a yawn fest. But, _well_ worth time and money. Quickly grabbed me and didn't t let go until the end. Performances were great. Not a super history buf but, from what I have read about the time -- they've done well with costume, character, and concerns of the day.

The rapid change of scene and situation actually did well in advancing 'plot' if you-want to call it that it was rather more like being in a time machine.

    You _won't_ be bored!

    Lincoln's determination wins

At last a brutally realistic portrayal of Civil War times on screen. The movie is long and wordy, not for action fans, but any American who wonders how a nation based on freedom and equality for all allowed slavery to persist for nearly 100 years after the Declaration of Independence was signed. Lincoln's determination to end slavery in his second term as President drives the film. The masterful performances by the actors bring this long ago time to life. I highly recommend seeing "Lincoln".

    History Channel Special

An excellent work of historical drama, showing the inner workings of politics and governance have been with us from the beginning. But I have to say that Daniel Day Lewis is not the Lincoln that I expected. While an excellent actor, I do not believe this was an accurate portrayal of Abraham Lincoln. The story moved VERY slowly, felt like real time at points. And I wanted to see some of the strength and regal bearing that Lincoln is reported to have had in great measure. Lewis's Lincoln comes off as the bowed, sensitive, soft spoken, politician with the single-ness of purpose to get the deed done... AND I hated the ending.
