Excellent Performances, but slow, plodding script

    by

Daniel Day-Lewis is outstanding - acting does not get any better. Sally Field is perfection as Mary. Tommy Lee Jones give the best performance of his career.

The weakness is the script, editing and Spielberg's plodding direction. The scenes go on too long and it becomes self-indulgent and repetitive in it's preachy message.

I wanted to see more of the persoanl side of Lincoln and not so much the political. We do see how rotten politicians were then and how nothing has changed but only gotten worse.

The overall feel of the movie is dark, dirty and somber. It lulls you to sleep at times.

I was expecting a better overall film and not just pieces.

    Lincoln

How can you go wrong when Doris Kearns Goodwin and Speilberg collaborate on a film. Her story telling brilliance and his film making magic combine to make one of the best movies I've seen in years!! Some of the negative comments I've read in the adjoining box are ridiculous and must have been written by people who are either 12 or have an I.Q of 12. The movie is a history lesson wrapped in a fascinating story. Daniel Day Lewis, Straithan (sp.), Spader, Jones, and Field are magnificent in their roles. How anyone could watch this movies and not walk away with a good feeling about how our forefathers struggled to make this country as good as it could possibly be, is beyond me. I had many laughs at the anecdotes and behavior of the characters and I had a tear in my eye thinking about the atrocities we allowed against our fellow man - just because their skin was a different color. I also felt sorry for Lincoln and his family for the personal toll this struggle took on their lives.

This Art Met History and Fiction Prevailed.....It's Entertaining None The Less.

Albeit more historically accurate than "Abe Lincoln Vampire Hunter," this Abe isn't all that honest. Believe what you will but artistic license was taken, revoked, suspended, reinstated and now the artist is doing his mandatory three to life. I like Mr. SS's as much as any movie buff but before the general public swallows this basically "history revised by Hollywierd," they'd do well to heed the words, "those who forget the lessons of history are doomed to repeat them." Dismiss me, laugh, whatever floats your boat but from the first scene to the last, this was a melodramatic play, loosely based on (not in) historical fact. See it though. It's much better than the "Abe" Vampire movie OR the other Vampire movie that opened this weekend. Just don't learn history from movies and TV.....read.

    Very moving film

While a bit slow at times, it's hard not to be moved by this film. Daniel Day Lewis' channeling of Lincoln is eerily similiar to historical accounts of our 16th President's personality. I had previously read "Team of Rivals" and had a 'leg up' on the characters in the film. It may have been a bit difficult to follow without that. The cinematography was superb. I was a bit disappointed that we didn't see glimpses of Lincoln as a young boy, but overall this film hits you in the heart. It's hard not to come away with a realization that this man's walk on earth was divine intervention.

    Lincoln

    The acting was incredible.
Even at 2 1/2 hours you felt like yo were right there the entire time.
It also gives us hope for our troubled nation today.
    God Bless Abraham Lincoln!

    FANTASTIC

    by

If there is anyone else out there that thinks they're going to get Best Actor then I'm sorry but Daniel Day-Lewis has it on lockdown. He is phenomenal as Lincoln. He IS Lincoln. It is fascinating story and Steven Spielberg did a wonderful job just letting the story tell itself. So great. Go see it. Go read Doris Kearnes Goodwin's book. GO DO ALL THOSE THINGS and be prepared for this movie to sweep the Oscars as it should.

    Very emotional movie

I was surprised how the entire movie was about one incident, the fight between passing or not passing of one important Amendment to our Constitution. It is raw history re-enacted on screen. So many lost their lives because of the war, and Lincoln paid with his life as well for pushing the Amendment through to success. This is a movie about two people who have fascinated us all over the years, Abraham and Mary Todd Lincoln, his wife. I am glad I saw it once, and am not sure I want to see it again. Not a ''feel good'' movie, but history, raw, sad history with a few moments of elation.

    Except for that Mrs. Lincoln . . . .

    Extremely well done.

The first few minutes had me wondering whether Speilberg and team was using gratuitous violence for its own sake. Not the case, just as in Saving Private Ryan, the reality of the conflict needed to be established.

What a better way to explain the politics of war then with a well written well acted story.

Having read a lot about this war and to politics behind hit, the some what sleazy attributes of how the 13th amendment was passed, was handled with kid gloves compare to what probably went down.

this is a great movie worth the time in front of the "big screen".

My hope is the the same production team could take on Jame's L. Swanson's Manhunt as a sequel. It would be fantastic.

    Lincoln

    by

"Lincoln" is a superb movie with great acting, dramatic cinematography, and directing that evoked Oscar worthy performances from a number of actors. Daniel Day Lewis gives the performance of a lifetime and makes the viewer forget he is playing a role. The audience applauded at the end of the movie. "Lincoln" is best suited for adults and children over 12 years of age. There is some strong language.

    Lincoln

This film is a MUST SEE for all adults of voting age. A lot of lessons to learn here, in regards to the realities of Washington D.C. politics.

    The acting was superb.

    Well Done, Spielberg.

The movie is very well done. When you are watching the movie, you do not see Daniel Day Lewis, you see Abraham Lincoln. You will be seeing him during awards season.

    Good not great

The acting was superior. Day-Lewis and Sally Field were there characters. Day-Lewis has set the bar for all future Lincolns. He was Lincoln. All the acting was excellent but I could not get past some of the big named actors playing smaller roles as if they needed a pay day. This was a distraction as I found myself trying to place the actor and not paying attention to the words.

The movie was a great character study but it lacked real conflict between characters. The conflict was between groups, North vs. South, Dems vs Republicans, pros vs cons of the 13th amendment. It was a movie about the House of Representative vs. the White House and the will of the President.

The best scenes were one on one conflicts between Lincoln and Mary, between Lincoln and individual congressmen. It needed more of that. Daniel Day Lewis carried the movie and will most likely get a nod for best actor. Sally Field will also get a nod.

Great movie - good historical education and to see a great man

    by ddsmall

Wonderful movie. I was in tears at the end awestruck by the human being, Lincoln, and what he was able to do and what he was able to bear. A master with people and as a politician.
It gave the human dimension to the people involved and the sense of the great burden that was born to save the Union and eliminate slavery.

It also gives insight on how humans evolve in their thinking and views. The prejudice against blacks seen then as compared to how we treat and view each other today shows how we can change for the better, not just in race relations but in our views about many other aspects of our human experience.

Daniel Day-Lewis, David Strathairn, and Tommy Lee Jones stood out in their performances, in part, due to the large part their roles played in the movie, in part, to the interesting nature of the characters they played and, of course, due to their talent.

Best film of the 21st Century!

If you miss this film, you deprive yourself of an insightful treat. Lincoln is a film that artfully integrates the historical context of the nearing end of the Civil War following Lincoln's re-election with a poignant look inside his personal life, struggles, and triumphs. Although many well-known stars appear, the focus remains on the story and Lincoln. Sally Field gives a particularly noteworthy performance on various levels of excellence, as do Tommy Lee Jones, Hal Holbrook, and others. The dynamics are well done and it will captivate you! Of note, this is a particularly exceptional film for parents to see with their junior high and high school children--as, at one point in the film it is stated, "...this is history!" Do not miss this superb presentation -- it should, if Hollywood has any integrity at all, play in many Academy Award categories in March!
