    Brillian Daniel Day-Lewis

WORTH SEEING: Daniel Day-Lewis is magnificent in Spielberg's Lincoln, which is very well made. Best decisions: it begins with the Gettysburg Address, and ends with the Second Inaugural, which is probably the greatest American political speech of all time.

    Lincoln

I really enjoyed the scenes where everyone would watch Lincoln with admiration and awe…probably because that is what I was doing also.
In my opinion, Daniel Day Lewis did a terrific job portaying Lincoln.

Best movie I've seen in years

    by cyka3

I knew it was going to be good, but I had no idea what a magnificent film this would turn out to be. Thoroughly researched, intelligently written, and magnificently acted and directed, it is hands-down one of the best movies I've EVER seen. The subject matter of this film -- the machinations behind the passage of the 13th Amendment -- could have been dry and dull. But the humor and humanity with which it was injected, and the fascinating tidbits of historical fact, made it one of those movies you don't want to end. Another feather in Steven Spielberg's cap, and deserving of many Oscar wins. Just two words of caution: First, if you have young children, you may not want to expose them to the rough language and the graphic (though brief) war scenes. And second, if you're not interested in history or politics, go see a mindless action film.

Lincoln is an OK movie, too long to be so bland

I went into the movie with low expectations, expecting it to be a blasé documentary about the attempt to pass the 13th Amendment and that's what I got out of it. Two-and-a-half hours worth. I was fidgety at the 1:45 mark.

I was not aware that President Lincoln sounded exactly like a monotone Bill Clinton. Interesting. There was no emotional range to the portrayal of the President save for a 30-second spot. Oh, and he slapped a table loudly once. No doubt the guilt at American history will compel the Academy to undeservedly bestow D-Day Lewis and the flick an Oscar (though Argo was far better).

It's flat, even-keeled movie, interesting from a historical perspective but blandly acted (save for Sally Field) and with nearly no character development whatsoever, also save for the First Lady (Sally Field). The final scene of the movie seemed gratuitous and out of context.

Not a great movie, but fine for fans of history and period pieces.

    Lincoln

This movie will probably go down as one of the great movies of this century. I believe it will win for best movie of the year. As history it showed a Lincoln who was brave smart and understanding his time in history. Coming at this time of a historical election withe first African American president. It does what history do-- teach.

    Makes Lincoln accessible

This is a very enjoyable film that displays the incredible performances of the lead actors.

If there is a weakness, the story over the enacting of the 13th amendment seems a bit melodramatic compared to the real conflict that waged on the battlefield. This makes the film slow at times, much like on of Lincoln's many stories.

In all, it made this historical man very accessible to people of our age.

    Renetta

My rating for this movie is 5 (five) Stars!!!!! Oscar material!

This is a powerful movie! The acting was just what I expected...quality, subperb! Loved the banter (just like today's fight D's against R's). I can't wait to purchase the DVD.

Put this on your must see list.

Sally Field is great! Whoever cast her choose the right actress. She's still got it!

Hal Holbrook outstanding! Tommy Lee - Wonderful! Abe Licoln..heart warming.

Mr. Steven you did it again.

Cinematography made my stomach a little sick too real.

    Lincoln inspires

This movie is fantastic on several levels. All of the characters are credible and most very well developed. For instance, US Grant has very minor appearences but in those short scenes his character as a person and on the stage of history is established. There are a number of Oscar nominees here for best and supporting actors. I could write paragraphs here but wont.
Spend your time seeing this film instead of reading about it!
We never noticed how long the film is. We were enraptured mentally and emotionally. Both my wife and I felt a range of thoughts and feelings;we wept and laughed.
This is a great film about great people (born and made) in a momentous time in world history.

    Lincoln

    by dvmoser

As usual, Speilberg has done a masterful job. Daniel Day Lewis is fabulous! I wouldn't have picked him to play Lincoln, but he Was Lincoln! I really enjoyed this portrayal of these seminal events in our nation's history.

    Almost perfect

    by dgkerns

This is a wonderful film with an epic performance by Daniel Day-Lewis. A few quibbles: Spielberg should have ended this movie with Abe in profile walking into history. The main add-on (I'll keep the explicit spoiler to myself) was obviously part of Lincoln's story, but not a part of the narrative of this movie. Tommy Lee was very good, but he could play cantankerous in his sleep. Casting against type (Spielberg's buddy Tom Hanks?) might have been more interesting for the Stevens character. All that said, this is a terrific, must-see movie. Oscars will abound.

    good acting but l-o-n-g

From a historical perspective, I found it interesting to learn how difficult it was to get the amendment passed, and what fannegling went on behind the scenes -- politics as usual. But both my partner and I had a hard time understanding a lot of the dialogue. It was long and sometimes confusing. Daniel Day-Lewis did an excellent job portraying Lincoln.

    LINCOLN: FINE CINEMA, DUBIOUS POLITICS

"Lincoln" is a great evocation of the capital's culture and politics at the end of the Civil War.
Daniel Day-Lewis is superb as the president, but the real Oscar-winner is likely to be Sally Field, who manages to capture both the neurosthenia and dignity of Mary Todd Lincoln. Unfortunately, the politics portrayed here are far less complex than the characters of the protagonists. The Republican Radicals are presented as patriotic statesmen for betraying their commitments to social and political equality for Black Americans in order to secure a legal reform -- passage of the 13th Amendment. The ghastly century-long consequences of that betrayal, and of the sainted Abraham's unwillingness to actually liberate the South, are never made clear. As a result, the movie remains on the level of hagiography, and another chance to reconsider the hard questions of American history is lost.

Lincoln lovers will be most impressed

I watched Lincoln with a friend who had read a lot of the history about Lincoln whereas I knew/remembered very little. I was touched by the character of Lincoln but felt like beginning was a little dry. She however was enthralled with the story and accuracy to what she had remembered and how well Daniel Day Lewis portrayed that character. Overall the acting, cinematography seemed excellent. As for the movie as a whole, people with knowledge of Lincoln history may get the most bang for the buck on this one while others may have a harder time. I still however, enjoyed the movie as a whole.

    Good movie.

I found the movie to be very educative. I think Sally Field was brilliant.
And Tommy Lee brought some humor to the movie.
A must see...I can see some of the actor taking awards this year.
