A New Birth of Freedom! Lincoln, an Excellent Film

    by Homer33

"Lincoln" is an excellent films that exhibits all of those qualities of excellence requisite for drama delineated by Aristotle in his book, "Poetics".
That is: 1. Excellent plot development; 2. Excellent Character Development; 3. Excellent moral development; 4. Spectacle; and 5. Good music.
While being extremely entertaining, the film stimulates the intellect and the emotions.
It reminds one of the sacrifices that Lincoln and others made in order to maintain our nation and government "of, by, and for the people."

    Lincoln is a must see!

Compelling movie and Oscar quality performances by Daniel Day Lewis as Lincoln and Billy Bob Thornton as Thadeus Stevens. Speilberg hits a home run for best director.

    Lincoln

Excellent movie, I just hate giving DemocRATs like Steven Spielberg any money, so I had to tell myself that my $10 went to a Republican that was in the movie, if there is such a thing in Hollywood.

Daniel Day Lewis is a tremendous actor, I think he may win another Academy Award for this performance.

Great acting, disappointing screenplay, overripe direction

    by pajer

I was expecting a great movie. I was disappointed.

The acting and costumes and sets are second to none.

The screenplay and dialog is contrived, and lacking subtlety. Plot points that are perfectly clear by inference, are spelled out explicitly like a Law and Order episode where the characters pause to explain to the viewer what just happened. I note that the screenplay was written by the same guy who wrote "Angles in America", which I also thought was poorly done, so maybe he an I are just on different wavelengths. The plot is spiced-up with a sub-plot of "dirty tricksters", and dramatic scenes in the House of Representatives. I'd like to know the historical accuracy of those.

It's directed with construction tools as opposed to cabinetmaker tools. Blunt. You *will* root for the "good guys". You *will* be manipulated, as in a romantic comedy.

Near the end, there is a wonderful scene that should close the movie, but two pointless epilogues follow.

    Over-hyped

While the performances of Day-Lewis et al are terrific, the script is languid at best. The movie was overly long and pedantic at points. Preachy too (from a standard Hollywood perspective). Cinematography is just right with a sepia tone overlay that ties to the Matthew Brady photos of the era with which we are familiar. Given all the hype, I was disappointed.

    Boring.Slow,Long,Bad Acting

Lincoln is the worst movie I have seen in years. Boring. Slow. Unimaginative and badly acted.

The story line is weak, Spielberg's direction is poor. Many scenes are shot with no imagination at all, and would be more suited to an amateur stage play, not a Hollywood motion picture, at $11 a ticket..

The Lincoln impersonation by Day Lewis is wooden and unbelievable.

Sally Field overacts terribly, as does Jones.

There is no attempt to tell the viewer who most of the characters are,

There is almost no attempt to tell viewers the dates when events depicted are actually happening.

Avoid this terrible movie at all costs.

    Lincoln

I agree completely with the review of " New York Snooper " , who has discerning judgement .
The acting was second rate as was the entire production , scenically . It was cheaply
presented , and ,sadly to say , portrays Spielberg as " burned out " . Regrettably he has
    passed his " prime " !

P.S. I would like to refer the movie critics to the Raymomd Massey and Beulah Bondi
film of LIncoln . Both superb examples of an actor and actress , in character , in a performance
and scenic setting which transforms you and stays indelibly etched in your memory .
The Art of Acting and film making lives with our current age of mediocrity , with movie
goers and Newspaper critics floating along with the tide . Three cheers for the " New York
Snooper " who ever you are . Keep sending out your reviews . You are a ray of Hope !

    Oscar Worthy

    by MedRed

A lot of effort goes into making a historically accurate movie interesting apart from the facts. Lincoln will pull on your heartstrings and tickle your funny bone. Daniel Day Lewis out does himself with a stellar portrayal of Abraham Lincoln.

This move is but a sliver of time in Lincolns 2nd term as President. Lincoln captures the gray found between the proponents and opponents of the 13th amendment. This film succeeds in telling the story at the heart of a President consumed with the desire to do the right thing despite the monumental uphill struggle necessary to do so and the uncertainty of the outcome if successful..

"Lincoln" honors one of the greatest Presidents in the history of the US. A man born into poverty, afflicted with depression, a witness to the untimely deaths of two of his young children, a man charged with the responsibility of the United States of America during the bloodiest period of its history, and a man ultimately assassinated. Bring on the Oscars!

    Interesting, but...

I couldn't tell exactly what the movie was focusing on. The most interesting characters and plot line, all related to the passage of the 13th Amendment, took a back seat to close-ups of Daniel Day-Lewis eerily channeling our 16th president, while droning on and on in these exaggerated monologues better suited to the Broadway stage. This movie is at least 30 minutes too long; it's ponderous and heavy-handed. We counted at least three "endings". The only pluses were Janusz Kaminski's cinematography and the production design under the direction of Rick Carter. Kudos too to hair & makeup, costumes by Joanna Johnston, and set decoration by Jim Erickson and Peter T. Frank. Daniel Day-Lewis is a sure bet for a Best Actor nomination. But the story itself is bloated. and may have worked better as an HBO mini-series.

    Need to see it!

The acting is superb, the characters are very believable, the art direction and cinematography are great! Its good and important film and Spielberg is undeniable master, but I felt that the story is told in not very engaging way. Sometimes it bored me, but there is magic on screen and it holds your attention. In his dramas Spielberg tends to be a bit too over dramatic and pompously patriotic and this directness often spoils for me an impression from his films. But I was very happy to see a full theater on the film where the message is more important than just a simple entertainment.
And lastly I wanted to say Thank You to creators for shooting yet another movie on film - its a joy for my eyes!

    Lots of liberties????

I read a lot of Presidential biographies and I gave this movie a so-so rating. Lincoln the character was done well, Sally Fields was outstanding and yes Mary Todd was considered a nut by historians, yet she showed the strength of our first Lady.

    Acting and Makeup = Superb

    by bloomie

Amazing facts woven into a great story line. Showed that some behind-the-scenes political maneuvering was all too common even in those days! Gripping, eye-opening, and heart rendering. Not surprising for a Spielberg film!

    Great movie!

This is a long movie, a lot of dialog but you are so into the movie you lose track of time. Daniel Day Lewis, Sally Field, Tommy Lee Jones and the rest of this star studded cast are amazing. I hope I get a chance to see it again before it is out of the theaters.

    Kinda Boring

    by rlbuss

Such a rich subject and yet the movie was slow going and not as exciting as I expected. The movie should be titled "The 13th Amendment"

Lincoln - A Must See Movie

I expected a slow paced, historical docu-drama. What I got was a moving drama, with wonderful touches of humor, that bought the marble seated giant of Washington to life. This Speilberg movie is not for children but certainly for the young at heart and mind. It is certain to inspire the curious to learn more about this political icon and amazing earthly being. If you like history but hate trudging through the past, this is a must-see movie. Be prepared to applaud at the end of the movie.
