    Lincoln

I am a Linsoln aficianado, reading everything about him from Gore Vidal's work to Carl Sandberg's Pulitzer winning four volume set. I used to think that Raymond Massey did the best job portraying him in the movies, but I have to say Daniel Day Lewis'portrayal was awesome. I couldn't help but notice that the people in the packed theater I was watching it in were mesmorized when he spoke. Lincoln was a tortured man with a mental case for a wife and political hacks for a cabinet. No wonder he aged 20 years during his last year in office. When you sit down to Thaanksgiving dinner this year say a prayer for and thank Abraham Lincoln who is responsible for making it a National Holiday. If they ever event a time machine in my lifetime and give me a chance to go any one place in time for a day, it's 19 November 1863 in Gettysburg to listen one of the greatest Americans who ever lived

    Fascinating..

    by anne-b

DDL is exceptional in his portrayal of Lincoln, as are Tommy Lee Jones and David Strathairn.in their respective roles. Film was realistic in showing the living conditions and dress of the period; and the fear regarding enfranchisement. A slow start for those used to action films, but worth going the distance. Helps to have some knowledge of the history of the period; lots of references to events not otherwise explained. Read the Doris Kearns Goodwin book upon which the film is based before going; will be that much more enjoyable..

"Now he belongs to the ages." So does this great film.

I think I have an idea of how the people who first saw Citizen Kane felt: film history had been made. So it is with Steven Spielberg's Lincoln, which IMO is a masterpiece and has Oscar written all over it. More importantly, it will undoubtedly live on in American classrooms for future generations as a lesson in how messy political intrigue can sometimes result in a great moment for mankind.

Speilberg's meticulous attention to accuracy, detail and pacing serves the story well. Tony Kushner's layered screenplay made me feel like the proverbial fly on the wall as Lincoln cunningly jousted with political and personal demons simultaneously to legally abolish slavery before the war ended. The actors who portray Lincoln's family, colleagues and operatives are uniformly excellent, but special praise goes to Daniel Day-Lewis, who IS Lincoln. Fact: the film would have failed without him. Please mail him his Oscar now.

In summary: See LIncoln. It is historic on many levels.

    Superb acting

Spielberg crafts a great movie about the wrangling and complicated dynamics of politics. The acting is superb. Day Lewis is not present int he movie; you only see Lincoln brought back to life.

Although the movie is excellent and every American should see it as a well-needed history lesson, some may find the extensive dialogue and political discourse less interesting than the bangs and booms of Skyfall.

Daniel Day Lewis is the boss!

Daniel Day Lewis has to be the single best actor of our times! He literally becomes any character he plays! He was Lincoln! Amazing performances by all actors, and the cast was quite prominent! This should be shown in schools everywhere in US history classes!

    Many Oscars for this one

It was a joy to see Lincoln come to life in this movie. Day-Lewis absolutely nailed his character right down to the timbre of his voice and his non confrontational mastery over his cabinet. This is a "don't miss" movie.

    Lincoln

The actors were great! Lewis was great as he is in every role I've seen him play. But, the history was questionable. Setting forth the idea that the war of northern aggression was based SOLELY on the need/want to abolish slavery sort of rubbed me the wrong way. Sure, slavery was wrong and it needed to go. But to propose that it was the only reason for the war is incorrect.

    Give Him The Oscar

Just give the Oscar to Daniel Day Lewis now and get it over with. And give the other one to Steven Spielberg while you're at it. What an astonishing movie. I felt like I had been transported back in time and dropped into the middle of Washington, DC during the Civil War.

    Fantastic acting and story line

    by

The provoking story of standing up for what you believe when all odds are against you. A great example of the strength & character it takes to make a difference in this world.

    Lincoln

It was a great, well acted movie, but In admitting that Lincoln was a Republican, The director had to throw in a few dirty tricks to make sure that the audience didn't take that as a positive. Daniel Day Lewis should win an Oscar for His Spot-on portrayal of Lincoln. Overall, it was very well done....

    Good FIlm

I was surprised. I thought this would be the life story of Lincoln. Instead it was the events surrounding the Emancipation Proclamation. Perhaps there should be a subtitle so moviegoers are not misled. Either way, this was brilliant.

I generally don't like star-studded casts. But this one worked. Period films always get my attention and tell the truth of an actor's ability. Like me, I'm sure there are moviegoers that were surprised by some of the events, comments, attitudes that took place and actually made it to the screen without being washed over or lied about; how refreshing for Hollywood to tell the truth (in the space of 2.5 hours).

I also thought it was interesting that we did not see the assassination but rather heard it announced at the other theater. It was an artistic decision I'm sure. But a good one. It would have taken another entire film for that portion of the story to be told.

Bravo to all the fine actors. I hope to see more American history on screen.

    SO good.

    by ibbnyc

I, of course, was expecting DDL to be as amazing as he usually is, and he most definitely did not disappoint, but to be honest I was half expecting this movie to be a bit dull and dry-- something you can see to appreciate great acting but whos story was just mildly engaging. I had heard it's dialog-heavy and more like a play than a film because there is little action, however although this is true, the film and this man (both Lincoln and DDL) will have you riveted start to finish with a fair amount of witty dialog, and strong supporting cast This movie will make you realize how amazing the earlier days of our country were, and how far our political system has fallen. In the wake of our current political crises, where it seems no one can get anything done in Washington, this movie stands as a beacon for what the system once was, and what it can hopefully return to. Go see this movie, it'll keep you thinking long after the credits roll.

    Lincoln

Daniel Day-Lewis is phenomenal as Abraham Lincoln, and all of the supporting cast is terrific. The movie is a nuanced telling of the story of how the 13th amendment prohibiting slavery came to be. I think of Spielberg as being a bit sentimental and over-the-top in his story-telling, but not this time.I think this is his crowning achievement. Best movie I've seen in years.

Great Movie But Muffled Sound Track

The movie is an excellent history lesson on the passage of The 13th Amendment to the Constitution. Acting is superb by DDL, Sally Fields, etc. My only complaint is the poor clarity of the voice sound track - The low volume dialog is often muddled with ambient noise or room echo. I suppose this was done on purpose for "realism" but it often causes problems understanding what is being said.
