Good to see a movie with no explosions

    by

A great history lesson; shows us how far the country has come.

As an aside, I never thought I would see so many people in Manhattan pay to see a movie that depicted Republicans in such a favorable light.

    Lincoln

GREAT movie - LOVED the costumes, sets, plot and terrific performances by the key actors.

Profanity and grisly scenes fit within the plot but should rule out younger folks.

Length of film should not discourage--I never looked at my watch.

    A Must See

This movie was very well written, directed and acted! We loved all the characters. The historical presentation opened our eyes to the life and times of Washington, DC and the surrounding states we live in.

I hope this movie will make its way into my stocking at Christmas!

    Spielberg does it again! Insler

Steven Spielberg just keeps on rolling along. One of the greatest directors, he gives us another masterpiece. Lincoln's screenplay by Tony Kushner is superb, capturing the vernacular of the time. Add to that the award winning performances by Daniel Day Lewis, Sally Field and the rest of the cast, whose skills in delivering the language of 1860's America is great indicates that this film will be nominated for several categories come Oscar time.
This film's verisimilitude w/ sets and objects makes one feel he is seeing exactly what life was like back then. Mr. Lewis's portrayal of Lincoln- facial expressions, speech and body movement- makes me think that this is what the real Pres. Lincoln must have been like. He should get the Oscar. Also excellent is the cinematography, with Lincoln always in the middle with light upon him or his hands, heightened his mythic proportions. Also, the tale of passing the 13th Amendment shows politics hasn't changed in 150 yrs.
    A brilliant film!

    Lincoln

This is an impressive movie. I think all of our politicians should be required to see it. The acting is superb. This movie has something for everyone. It's a great story and well told. It is not for young kids (younger than 12).

    Incredible Movie!

    by

I have read Team of Rivals and the fact that this movie was based on that book excited me. This movie is a MUST-SEE!! Daniel Day-Lewis performed what (I'm sure) will be an award-winning performance, and his supporting cast made sure everything fit together beautifully. There were so many times that you were able to glimpse into who Lincoln genuinely was. He was comedic but always battling depression, and you saw these two things battled throughout the entire movie. I am already planning to see it all over again. For any Abraham Lincoln fan, history buff, or even just the person looking for an interesting movie, Lincoln is perfect for anyone.

    Lincoln was phenomonal

    by dojoss

An outstanding movie that shows that those we idolize are really ordinary men who feel pain, love, emotional distress, who are voted into leadership in extraordinary times. While the theme centered around the passing of the 13th Amendment, we were treated to the politics of all that went into that passing. Hats off to Steven Spielberg for creating this as a seemingly current event. History tells us what the vote was; so, why was I sitting on the edge of my seat, holding my breath, until the final count was regarding the Amendment. Excellent movie, Extraordinary acting, Tremendous cast. This production will be around for a long time. I will be surprised if it doesn't take the majority of academy awards this go around.

    Lincoln

A really great movie with great historical education that applies to today. Lincoln really looks like Lincoln and not the actor. A must see for every American.

    All should see it.

    by FE523

Superb job by everyone in it. I've read many books on Lincoln and this film brought it all together. Sally Fields brought Mary Lincoln to life. What a personality she was. Daniel Day Lewis is at his best. Makes me wonder how this country would have evolved if Lincoln lived to complete his second term. Much better off I'm sure. Thank you S.S. for making it.

Lincoln: A Man of his Time, but not perhaps a Man for this Movie

    by

The "Lincoln" film is a largely dull movie overall. While it seemed to follow the general spirit of the historical Lincoln, it took several modern liberties. For instance there is a copious amount of rough language from characters across the demographic spectrum; even Lincoln makes bathroom jokes at random times. The confederate uniforms seem too clean and fake for that late in the war as well.

Other than that the film has a definite historical atmosphere in it. Even if it may seem to drag on, "Lincoln" is fairly accurate and true to the real Lincoln that historians have depicted. The viewer may find the similarities between the dilemmas of this president and an uncooperative congress and our current national government strikingly similar. If one is looking for a riveting thriller, he may have come to the wrong movie. But if he or she truly wants to immerse himself in that time's trials and aspirations and mood, this is an excellent film worth seeing.

    Great in big screen

    by

This is the kind of movie best seen on the big screen.
The cinematography is awesome and movies stages in periods, like Civil War time,. have much detail to soak in. The bigger the screen the better.
A LOT of dialogue. Good story telling and my fact checking agrees with the timeline of events presented.

    Lincoln

    An excellent movie.

Beautifully acted, lit and filmed, and from what I remember of the book "Team of Rivals" by Doris Kearns Goodwin, kept close to the known facts.

I was amused that both Lincoln and Grant were portrayed by non American actors!

    Fabulous!

    by

It covers a very short period of time in Lincoln's presidency, but is very powerful. The main part of the story is the struggle to pass the amendment that abolished slavery. It gives a great history lesson on the timeline of when things happened. At this point in history we seem to think that he did the emancipation proclamation and that was all there was to it. I just didn't realize how hard he struggled to pass this amendment. The difficulties with congress back then resonate for today. The fighting among themselves for power, and the lack of support for those in power. Daniel Day Lewis is AMAZING in this role! All the actors are topnotch, but he makes the movie mesmerizing. For the first time I really got a sense of who Lincoln was.
It also give you a view of how far we have come from 100 years ago, with the black vote and women's vote. This is a must see movie!
