The movie was funny because it hit so close to home but it could have used a litttle better editing it was a little long and choppy at times. But overall I gave it three out of five stars.

    If This is 40...

    by

I love movies that have a realistic focus on family life. Families have crazy dynamics and this movie carries that well. For comedies like this it's refreshing to see fairly good cinematography too!

Paul Rudd and Leslie Mann co-star as Pete and Debbie and they have great chemistry on the screen. A believable couple who have problems...teched-out kids, mooching or absent parents, problems at work, and decisions that have to be made. There's a handful of recognizable faces and it's fun to see them all together. It's mostly realistic but with some grand overkill in the form of Melissa McCarthy ranting that's hilarious. (Be sure to sit through the first part of the credits!)

The brightest star is Apatow. Not enough directors can write and direct well. He's made a funny, heart-warming, and well crafted story that had potential to go overboard--but held in place by good direction. If this is 40, even with all the trouble, I'll take it.

I want my 3 hours back

If like most of us you have seen the trailers then you have seen the best parts of the movie. The constant arguing trying to be funny is painful. When you watch Jerry Springer you feel better about your own life. Someone else's life sucks more than yours. This is one of those kinds of movies. Save your hard earned money...

    I should have walked.

I am a 34 year old movie buff. I have seen many good, the so-so's, and the bad but never in my life have I ever wanted to walk out of the theater after 20 minutes into a movie. The movie was filled with endless awkward moments, most of the characters are whinny and annoying, the entire movie was based on yelling and cursing and there were very few... okay *five* funny scenes. I wanted to cry and scream the entire movie because it was that horrible. I left very depressed. I am shocked that this movie made it to the theater.

I am sorry to be so negative but please save your $10 for a beer. I promise you'll have a better time drinking by yourself than watching this garbage.

    Horrible

    by

I am a huge movie fan, and it doesn't take much for me to enjoy a film . A little plot, an interesting character and I'm good to go...
Honestly, I don't know any 40 year olds who behave this way. The sex references must have occurred every five minutes only separated by the "***&^" every other word dialog. That wouldn't be so bad if it was funny, but it was all so immature. We wanted to get out of there, but we stuck around for two reasons: 1. Nothing else was playing at that time 2. We assumed that at least the problems would be resolved in the end. Big assumption. Not one problem fixed. Not one of the relationships is improved in any way. None of their life problems gets worked out. None of their money/business issues get resolved. In the end they decide that it's easier to stay like they were before. Horrible!!!

    I liked it

    by

I have read many reviews and they have been very mixed, but I have to say I liked it. I am 42 now and could relate to a lot of it. I thought it was consistently funny throughout the whole 2 hours. I am also a huge Paul Rudd fan so that helped.

    WOW!

I had a few good laughs in this movie, but overall I found it was too long and a lot of extra scenes were added and should have been edited out. I found myself getting frustrated at the movie as it progressed as it seemed it would never end. Like I said, We did have some laughs, but overall We were stunned by how much it lacked.

Terrible!! I wish I would have walked out of the theatre in the first 15 minutes... kept thinking it was going to get better.. NOT! The language was awful..my friend and I walked out of the theatre more stressed out than when we walked in... Don't waste your money.

    Hilarious

    by

It may be crude but I haven't laughed that hard at a movie in a long while. It was worth seeing, I want to buy it the second it's available. So good!

    Lightweight Fare

If it weren't for Paul Rudd and Leslie Mann I would have been snoring long before I was, which was about 2/3 through this overly-long (by at least 30 minutes) film. The material was not good enough to be carried even by Rudd and Mann. Their kids, played by Judd Apatow's own kids were pretty cute and adequate. Albert Brooks, as Rudd's dad, was so annoying, I could barely stand to watch the scenes with him and Rudd. A few laughs, yes, but not memorable in any way.
And if I see Melissa McCarthy being Melissa McCarthy one more time in one more movie, I'm offing myself.
I'd give it 2 1/2 stars out of 5. Maybe 3, tops. But then I've seen so many GOOD and entertaining films lately, this can't hold up.

    this is not my 40

    by

I took my wife to see this movie after a lunch date. As a 43 year old married man with 3 kids, I could relate to some parts of this movie. My wife, younger than myself, also related to some of the stresses the characters had. But 2+ hours long. It had me checking the clock on my phone 1 1/2 hours in to it. Thank GOD for the out takes running with the final credits, they put a smile on my face while we exited the theater.

    Many Many Laughs

    by schwanz

This is a must see for someone who is about to enter this time in their life or who has already been there. The warmess and honesty between the couple is priceless and will be very entertaining for anyone who has been in a long term relationswhip. Paul Rudd's scene of him looking in the mirror (you all know the scene) will be forever planted in my brain. LOL!

    This is 40

The movie wasn't bad, however, there were scenes in the trailer that drew me to the movie, but were different in the actual movie (not as funny). Also, there were waaaaay too many unnecessary "F" and "D" words, and waaay more chaos than I feel it warranted. It was also hard to relate to the marriage of the main characters because there was not much background revealed through memory scenes to give us a strong sense of their love. But in the end, it was an overall entertaining movie.

    Don't waste your money.

We would have walked out if we weren't there with another couple. When we got outside they said the same thing-lol.
I honestly cannot understand the good reviews. To each his own I guess.
