    Ultra Frustration

Thought maybe this movie would mirror my life with normal day to day frustrations of a married couple with small kids and little time for themselves. Instead I watched a screaming match between two unlikable characters who spend most of their lives lying to each other. Then we are supposed to magically believe they love each other at the end despite none of their issues being resolved. There were funny moments especially the outtakes while the credits were rolling. With little time for movies my husband and I wished we had spent our time/money on another movie!

Worth a watch, but not what I expected

    by skaggej

I wasn't too thrilled about this movie. It's actually kind of depressing. While 'Knocked Up' was hilarious throughout, 'This Is 40' had only a few funny moments and I found it difficult to laugh during those because of how sad and depressing the rest of the movie is. I'd watch it again to give it a second chance, but the first impression wasn't great and it's surely related to what I expected of it after seeing 'Knocked Up.'

    Depressing and Sad

    by tallmom

This movie was a real bummer. I can't believe I paid $10 to see a movie based on mine and my friends' lives. If I wanted that, I wouldn't bother going to the movies. Yes, I get it, it is based on real people with real problems and I'm sure there are people out there dealing with these types of issues, but these characters and their whining and complaining and putting each other down was too much to endure for 2 plus hours. The kids' characters were funnier than the adults. Seeing kids like that in a realistic light was refreshing because 13 year olds are obnoxious and 8 year olds are innocent and sweet. But these adults with their ranting and raving just got old and tiresome. Albert Brooks was funny but even his character got old after awhile. There were some funny moments where I chuckled out loud, but they were too few to sway me into liking this film. Sorry Apatow, Freaks and Geeks was your shining achievement.

I want my 3 hours back

If like most of us you have seen the trailers then you have seen the best parts of the movie. The constant arguing trying to be funny is painful. When you watch Jerry Springer you feel better about your own life. Someone else's life sucks more than yours. This is one of those kinds of movies. Save your hard earned money...

    HILARIOUS!

    by knd1027

It's safe to say anything directed by Judd Apatow starring Paul Rudd, Jason Segal, and Leslie Mann is going to be a must-see. This movie follows suit. It is hilarious - you're sure to be laughing pretty much the entire time. It also has a very believable plot which some comedies lack. However, as with any R-rated flick, it isn't for kids or even young adults - lots of language (which just serves to make it even funnier to adults) and some nudity.

    A Must see!

Movie was hilarious. I layghed all through the movie. They did use lots of strong language and sexual comments not appropriate for children under age 13. It was very realistic of everyday family and parents turning 40 with modern day kids and family issues. I thought it was great. I normally go to early features becasue if movie boring I will fall alsleep. I went at the 9:00pm showing and never dozed off so that means it it's good.
My daughters friends who are 20 thought it was not funny and said it was boring. But thats because they are young and can't relate to the content of the movie. For couples 40 and over who have families it was very, very funny and true to life and relationships.

A Great Way to Spend the Evening

This movie was hilarious and the laughs were continuous from start to finish. It is a longer movie but it didn't seem that way and I was entertained through the whole thing. For those of you that are fans of Judd Appatow, this movie will not let you down.

    Very Real, Very Enjoyable

    by

I feel this is one of Judd Apatow's best films to date. Although it is not what you come to normally expect from him (a comedy); it is well written, heartfelt, and filled with a cast of characters that I found relatable.

    Wait for DVD

While there were some very funny moments in this movie it had no continuity. Several scenes should of been cut. It seemed like Judd Apatow wanted to give his friends a cameo even if it didn't pertain to the story. Also these characters were annoying. I love Paul Rudd but in this movie I thought he was a real ****. Leslie Mann's character was so annoying it's small wonder Paul Rudd didn't want to have sex with her, The kids whine and the father in laws are worthless weenies. The only saving grace is Melissa McCarthy who almost reprises her bridesmaids role.

    HYSTERICAL, I LOVED IT!!

AS THE PARENT OF TWO DAUGHTERS, WHO ARE NOW GROWN WITH CHILDREN OF THEIR OWN ON THE WAY, I FOUND THIS MOVIE TO BE PERFECT. THE WRITING WAS SPOT ON. IT WAS A BIT LONG, BUT I WILL GO AGAIN. ALSO, IT WAS CERTAINLY NOT FOR CHILDREN, AT LEAST UNDER 14. BOTTOM LINE I HAVEN'T LAUGHED THAT HARD AT A MOVIE IN YEARS.

    OMG! So funny!

    by

I LOL'd :) A lot of the time with funny movies it's like they show all the funny parts in the trailers, and then you get in there and it's so disappointing, but that wasn't the case! This movie was awesome!

    This is 40

Funny in parts, but tried to tackle too much so it ended up being disjointed. Could have condensed the movie down to an hour or less. Some of the additional characters were unnecessary and simply made the movie longer. I usually like these type of movies for what they are, silly and a bit raunchy, but the storyline ended up being as much about whining as it was about turning 40. Again funny moments, but wait until pay-per-view and see it for $3 vs. $12 (NY area).

    Tedious and annoying

If you enjoy listening to a couple and their two children scream at each other for two hours, then "This is 40" is the movie for you. Throw in a few scenes of bathroom humor just to add insult to injury. It had some individual funny moments, but not enough to save this movie. I loved "Knocked Up" and other Apatow films.

A Clear Picture of Life at 40, with the Pleasures and ManyPains that comes with It.

Apatow does his thing again! He makes a comedy out of an introspective story about real people. If you are married and in your 40s, or even close to it, you will probably get more of a snapshot of your life than laughs. It was funny at times, but not drop dead funny. Melissa McCarthy was hilarious as always though. The good part was that Rudd and Mann give believable performances as the married couple from KNOCKED-UP that are still trying to figure themselves out in this phase of life - with kids, mortgages, careers and sex. The problems they had were things an audience could connect to.They could have cut 10 minutes off the film to move it along quicker though. Still, I enjoyed the ups and downs, and the reconciliations the characters had to go through. It may not hit the funny bone like you thought walking in, but it will make you feel something walking out. Don't miss the outtakes. Geek Soul Brother gives this film 3 out of 5 Cosmic Afros.
