    Lightweight Fare

If it weren't for Paul Rudd and Leslie Mann I would have been snoring long before I was, which was about 2/3 through this overly-long (by at least 30 minutes) film. The material was not good enough to be carried even by Rudd and Mann. Their kids, played by Judd Apatow's own kids were pretty cute and adequate. Albert Brooks, as Rudd's dad, was so annoying, I could barely stand to watch the scenes with him and Rudd. A few laughs, yes, but not memorable in any way.
And if I see Melissa McCarthy being Melissa McCarthy one more time in one more movie, I'm offing myself.
I'd give it 2 1/2 stars out of 5. Maybe 3, tops. But then I've seen so many GOOD and entertaining films lately, this can't hold up.

    So unrealistic

The movie was awful. To be funny, one would need to identify with the situation of at least one of the characters. The movie was so disjointed and out of touch with reality that it was bizarre, not humorous.

    Where was the plot?

I've been reading reviews that say that you need to be 40, married, and with kids to appreciate this movie. If that is the case, COUNT ME OUT! If I wanted to watch a family complain about work, family, and getting older I would have just visited my own family. I honestly wanted to leave half way through the movie, but kept hoping that the plot line would pick up at some point. It didn't. And I understand that this was a "family production", and that the child actors are their real children. But they can't act. The teenager was completely annoying and just tried to yell like he acting mom the entire time. I would not see this movie again. Bummer.

    Good movie but long

This was a funny movie, at times, but I feel like it was dragged out WAY too long. I'd recommend waiting until it is available to rent rather than spending money at the theater.

    Funny!

    by

This movie was hilarious. It's easy to relate to if you have kids and are in your 40's! I was hesitant to go after reading some of the reviews. Glad I went. I laughed the whole time. Must see!!!!

Very cute movie. A little too crude in some parts that didn't need to be there. Also, about 15 minutes too long. Other than that - very entertaining.

When I saw the movie was over 2 hours I thought "Oh No", but the movie was funny, fast paced, you could identify with the different characters because we all have family and memories that were portrayed in the story. I would see it again and very seldom do I watch movies twice.

    So-So

I enjoyed the movie but the language was too much and especially surprised that they had the oldest child using it. Nudity a little but didn't really add anything to it....definitely for 17 and over....

Hilarious for a select group of people.

    by

My wife and I laughed our butts off at the funny parts, and felt tension during the tense parts. We recommend this movie for all married couples with children between the ages of 30 - 40, but your children would probably not find the humor in it, nor identify with the characters. I can see from other reviews and reactions from friends who did not enjoy this movie that age and child-status are a definite factor in regard to seeing and knowing the full humor in this film. I could identify with the characters, as could my wife because the characters were not flawless, although at times you'd think they are; and they weren't overly flawed for the purpose of creating unnecessary plot points and useless jokes. The characters suffered a few nuances in life, that I am thankful to not identify with, but the humor at those moments was there for me anyway. Judd Apatow's lighting has stuck again.

    This is Realistic

Saw This is 40 yesterday and loved it. If you are around 40, with a family, you will relate to this movie on many, many levels. It is a typical Judd Apatow movie, which cleverly combines wit, comedy, drama and plenty of "real life" situations. Loved it!

    This Is 40

This movie was really really good and I definitely recommend that everyone go and see it. I am approaching 40 in April and I am really having a hard time coming to terms with it, so I really felt myself in this movie. It was an exact portrait of my life with my husband and kids. I have never seen a movie that replicated my life to a T, but this movie did that exactly!!! LOVED IT!!!

    Good but not great

    by nhleees

You have to get past all the bickering and fighting that absolutely fills the dialogue in this movie to see some truly funny scenes. I found it overall to be a combination of funny, yet depressing at the same time as it painted such a negative picture of this family's life. So, if you're expecting a feel-good, romantic comedy, you may be a bit disappointed.

Save your money and wait to see at home

Aside from some amusing depictions of the impact portable technology has on homelife and in school social settings, this movie was disappointing and not worth $8 and 2 hours of my time. Scenes with Melissa McCarthy provide the best laugh out loud moments. Apatow's overuse of bathroom humor and constant profanity misses it's mark for me in this movie. His real life kids are good actors, but the material is just not that funny. I keep hoping and waiting to see Paul Rudd in another movie that can showcase his acting talent.

    Assigned viewing..

I would have given this movie a "Must" but it isn't for everyone. If you don't have kids a lot of this humor will pass over your head but being married will be your ticket in. Judd Apatow is extremely gifted at writing truth to life and there were countless moments throughout this movie that I could draw comparisons with my own life. Paul Rudd can get slighted occasionally simply because he is casted in just about every movie nowadays..but there is a reason why this is the case...he is talented. Rudd makes people laugh and sometimes that is enough. Onto the runtime... about 2:15 but it didn't seem like it due to the great story and comedy. Every character arch is buttoned up by the end but in a very satisfying open ended way that makes you realize some things get better and some things don't because that is life. If you want to laugh and more importantly if you want to realize that your life and your family aren't the only crazy ones in the world..go see it.
