Depressing and probably only interesting if your in your 40s

My boyfriend and I went to watch this movie thinking if would be funny like the trailer.
More the opposite it was frustrating to watch everyone fight and half way through we both wanted to leave. After staying for the rest of the movie we both don't want kids anymore and I'm not going to see a Paul Rudd movie anymore for a while. Not at all what we expected and horrible acting.
It might be semi interesting for people in their 40s, but since we are in our 20s not for us.

I wanted to love this movie but....

I was looking forward to seeing this one, being a big fan of the sort-of-first one. The two characters I thought would be strong enough to make this movie work but for some reason it just didn't come together. If you saw Funny People, you know what I'm talking about. You will be parked in your semi-comfortable theatre seat for 2-plus hours, and about halfway through this movie you find yourself looking at your watch wanting it to end. Maybe it was just a little too much depth into the lives of this family, or maybe it was just the ending which really wasn't an ending as it seemed to make one too many turns as the movie was winding down. Either way, there are some great performances from Chris O'dowd and Jason Segel but they are bit parts that just don't keep it interesting enough. Last note, maybe if you have kids you will find this a little more entertaining but if not you may find yourself just waiting for it to end. Sorry Judd, I'll still see the next one you come out with.

    Entertaining

"This is 40" was fun. Nothing to heavy; some situations probably relevant to just about anyone in or near the life stage of 40 with kids. Definitely NOT a film for young children. Although not my first choice to see when asked by friends, am glad I went. Good for some laughs.

    Wow That was bad

    by Ramper1

I was hoping for better, I know it was not a serious movie but it was way to chessey and too much going wrong for the family. Would have liked a little more of the problem to be solved and things to work out better.

    Don't waste your time

Thought this movie would be a nice light hearted movie. Not so much... Two hours of watching 2 unhappy people bicker about their marraige and their lives wore on my nerves. The only bright spot are the 2 darling girls who play the daughters. I look forward to seeing their bright faces in more movies.

    I really liked this movie!

This movie is a little longer than normal, but I never checked my watch once. The story kept me engaged the entire time. It was not as slapstick funny as I thought it would be. It had a lot of funny parts with a lot of real life thrown into it as well. I thoroughly enjoyed it! My husband and I looked at each other several times throughout nodding and smiling! The cast is INCREDIBLE! The movie is relatable and believable. Be forewarned, there is a lot of language, so if that's not your thing, I don't recommend this for you. If you don't mind language though, go see this movie!

    If This is 40...

    by

I love movies that have a realistic focus on family life. Families have crazy dynamics and this movie carries that well. For comedies like this it's refreshing to see fairly good cinematography too!

Paul Rudd and Leslie Mann co-star as Pete and Debbie and they have great chemistry on the screen. A believable couple who have problems...teched-out kids, mooching or absent parents, problems at work, and decisions that have to be made. There's a handful of recognizable faces and it's fun to see them all together. It's mostly realistic but with some grand overkill in the form of Melissa McCarthy ranting that's hilarious. (Be sure to sit through the first part of the credits!)

The brightest star is Apatow. Not enough directors can write and direct well. He's made a funny, heart-warming, and well crafted story that had potential to go overboard--but held in place by good direction. If this is 40, even with all the trouble, I'll take it.

    Very down to earth

enjoyed the movie. was very down to earth and realistic in its portrayal of a married couple.the only thing i did not like was the young daughter cussed the entire time. pretty ridiculous for a 15 year old to say F***.

    Laugh out loud funny

    by icroz

Terrific movie all the way through! Super fun night and one of the best movies I've seen in a while. Judd Apatow created another hit with this one, I'd see it again and buy the dvd for sure. The characters are believable and are forced to deal with several real life situations with hilarious outcomes. Great comedy!!!

Not so much comedy, lots of drama! Too much drama. Too much cursing and I curse like a sailor. Loved the actors but Lord, did I want to choke them most of the time.....

Definitely not for kids. There were some very funny parts, but too many F bombs, if they used less it would have still made it's point and crass humor.

    Oh. My. God.

Sold as a comedy, but it is a facade. The funniest parts were in the trailer. Nothing like Knocked Up; don't be fooled by the leads. Humor is beyond wry and I tend to like dry humor. The plot was disconnected and uneventful. Whole theater hated it. Two and a half hours of misery. Be prepared for a nap!

    Many Many Laughs

    by schwanz

This is a must see for someone who is about to enter this time in their life or who has already been there. The warmess and honesty between the couple is priceless and will be very entertaining for anyone who has been in a long term relationswhip. Paul Rudd's scene of him looking in the mirror (you all know the scene) will be forever planted in my brain. LOL!

I love the actors in the film, especially Leslie Mann, but this movie was overkill on vulgarity. Hollywood seems to think in order for a movie to be funny, it has to overload it with this kind of language. After a while it gets uncomfortable to watch and you start looking at your watch wanting it to get over. It could have been a good movie if they just left more room for the imagination. Both my wife and I walked out before it was over. For a Friday night, theater was less than 20% full, so others must have got the message out. Seemed like at least 10% of the people that were there were playing on their smart phones.

Do people really talk that way?

    by LT_MN

Lots of potential but it was hard to watch because of all the swearing ... Especially disturbing to see the kids swearing at the parents and the complete disrespect with which they all treated each other. If this is even a little but true, it's not hard to see why our kids from this environment would be messed up.
