How ironic the title is reflective of how I felt watching it

    by drjg

Sorry but to all writers out there how about providing some depth to your scripts rather than every other word being the F word. This movie was awful. Pitt was subpar gandolfini's character was pointless just like the movie. Save your money

    Good if....

    by

You will not leave the theater, after seeing this movie, with a warm a fuzzy feeling in your heart. Watch this movie knowing that this is a "leave the kids with a baby-sitter and get coffee after the movie" movie.

The acting is great. The plot is good, though not planned or detailed. It just kind of happens. The violence is intense and the photography couldn't be better. A little similar to a Quentin Tarantino film.

Either way, I would go say watch it. It's not too long, so what's the worst that could happen?

Hitting YourSelf In The Face With A Hammer Would Be Easier

    by Jinook

This movie never makes up its mind as to what it wants to be so in the meantime, it drags you through a subtle political discourse that sticks out like a sore thumb coupled with endless sea of graphic violence that rarely adds to the film's attempted plot points. The whole think felt like, sort of, David Lynch trying to do a hitman's version of Lost In Translation, failing miserably in the process.

    Killing Them Softly

Horrible movie! Didn't understand the purpose of things that continued in the background throughout the movie. A lot of guys sitting around look at each other with no dialogue. Slow and boring . . . several people left in the middle. Unfortunately I stayed to the end thinking that surely there must be more to the story. Sadly, there wasn't. Two hours of my life that I will never get back.

    Artsy isn't a dirty word.

Artsy just about describes this film. Great soundtrack behind a troubled hitman and his list of mentally unstable co-horts. He never get's straight orders from the top which is frustrating. He wishes things were just the way they used to be. Don't we all. Set during the time when W was on the air trying to repair financial regulations (yes this happened during his presidency too) Brad Pitt comes to a realize a brutally honest fact. America is not a country....America is a business.
Interesting cast...Gandolfini has a very interesting part that he knocks out of the park.

I'd give it a B+, for Brad Pitt fans it's probably an A. Keep an open mind and try to see more than what is just happening in front of you and the characters but the context in which they are operating in and I think you will enjoy the film.

    Cheers

    Disappointing

    by

All I can say is basically, save your money, this movie is not worth $12, it was extremely slow and the dialogue was more cheesy than it was intellectual. Brad Pitt definitely does a good job, but between the random mix-ins of Presidential speeches, the useless dialogue between Pitt and James Gandolfini, and the annoying back-and-forth's between the two witless idiot criminals, Killing Them Softly hits a very hollow bone and seemingly lacks a soul, if you will. All in all, it was extremely disappointing. Don't see it.

New Spin on an old Theme

    by

Brad Pitt does an incredible job of acting as both a hit man and GM of the local mob he is connected with. His job seems to make sure that discipline is enforced one way or the other. He is a no nonsense killer and you almost have to appreciate the great job he is doing. This is a story of mob violence from the perspective of the hit man, which you don't see too often.

James Gandolfini appears as a hired hit man. He is a bungling, alcoholic, incompetent at this stage of life and does a great job playing the part.

I'm guessing Brad Pitt will be up for best actor for this film.

    WTF?

First of all, I'm a big fan of Brad Pitt. Also, I like movies that make you think. I don't think you need a movie to be filled with action and explosions for it to be entertaining. All that said, this movie was just flat out terrible. It's fine if you want to make a dialog driven movie, but above all you must have good dialog. Terrible!!

    Definitely don't see this!

I never do these reviews, but this movie was soooooo bad, I had too. Should have walked out, but I kept thinking it had to get better. Too bad they wasted money on all the great actors. I with I could get my money back. Among the worst movies I have ever seen!

    This is not the avengers.

    by

The style of this film places all of it's focus on the acting with a little support from violence and mood changing scenery. That said it delivers it's story the same way Drive did a few months back. People that thrashed this film are just dumb 20 second thrill seekers. I especially can't stand the folks that say oh no. Really, then you do better jack holes...anyways this movie will not be a commercial success and that just fine by me. Pitt and the cast did a great job. See it once and never see it again.

    Great ART flick

If you're looking for another Goodfellas DO NOT go to see this movie. But if you like violence that is so stylized that it really doesn't seem violent anymore go see this movie.

Lots of dialogue that is interesting. Very fast pace. Everyone is amazing in this movie. Long enough to satisfy. Short enough not to bore the audience.

    Not the worst, but close

This movie was nearly the worst movie I have watched. Leaving the theater I told my wife that we would have to see two excellent movies to get this one out of my mind. The story plot seemed lost in a vacuum as well as the talent of several big name actors like Gandolfini and Pitt. Perhaps Pitt's movies Babel and Snatch were worse movies but not by much.

    Killing Them Softly

    by

3 groups walked out, and 50% of my group hated it, so clearly... I loved it! It was nothing that the trailer suggested and instead was a gripping cerebral study on the current economic times thru (in my opinion) some pretty creative characters and writing. Its only flaw was that it was a bit obvious what Dominik was doing, but it didnt take me out of the film. Acting was solid, not incredible, but held. I thought Gandolfini even though type cast, had considerable more depth than usual. And psuedo-newcomer Scoot McNairy, if he isn't already from the Boston area, he nailed a real authentic Boston persona (my gut says he prob is).
