FUN BUT CHOPPY

This movie has it all: Vampires, witches and werewolves. I am going to have to search for reruns of the original series from the 1960's because this movie was fun. Not a smash hit but fun. A movie like this could only go two ways. It could lean toward the supernatural making it more of a horror film with some action or try to capture more of a comedic angle which Tim Burton did but I don't think he went far enough. There wasn't a level groove so to speak with either approach resulting with an ending that carries no real emotional weight as it came out of left field. Who knows what will come next, if anything.

As I stated in the beginning, it was a fun movie to watch but my suggestion would be wait for the DVD. It isn't a blockbuster by no means.

I thought this was fun and different...I watched Dark Shadows when I was young...and it did a god job of telling the story in a few hours. It was funny...and Johnny Depp is a fabulous actor!!!

Was very entertaining, not for young children, but for teenagers, it's a typical Tim Burton film and another with Johnny Depp. We went with our two teenage grandkids, and they enjoyed it as well. Has it's funny parts, but in general was a pretty good movie for the entertainment value.

While the movie keeps with some of the series, it's just hilarious. Too darn funny. Some parts were cheesy but its a Must See!!
Johhny Depp is GREAT! He really makes the character very funny. Action was off the charts.
Loved the fact that they included the story about the werewolf daughter. This movie would work well for older kids.

Not Enough Bite

Excellent entertainment when there is not much else to watch. Johnny and Michelle perform well in this comedic drama. The plot is thick at times and yet predictable. The sets, make-up and effects are pleasing and not disappointing. Overall, a thrill to watch in spite of a lack of a new twist or spin on a saturated blood-sucking theme.

It's a show directed at all the Dark Shadows followers of the late 60's early 70's. Michelle Phifer (Mammas & the Papas). Alice Cooper made a cameo appearance.Trying to recall the names and their original roles was a gentle reminder of the soap opera one used to rush home from school to watch. It was well made with a tongue in cheek humor. If you have to ask who the Mammas and the Papas were, it probably won't have as much meaning, but, that's okay because you can follow the plot and enjoy the special effects.

I agree there were some parts that were slow, but a great movie none the less! I took my husband, 15yr old, and 12yr old, and they all said the movie was good. If you love the dark humor that Tim Burton always brings and an all star cast, then you won't be disappointed!

Dark Shadows Lite

Horror? Comedic horror? Horrific comedy? A bit of all three. The movie is whimsical, funny and scary. Some of the liteness worked, and some of it didn't, Johnny Depp doesn't hold a candle to my childhood memories of Jonathan Frid from the original series. However, had anyone asked me to imagine a whimsical vampire I couldn't have done it before now, but this is some sort of comedy or spoof. Michelle Pfeiffer wears the protective parent and snob well. Helena Bonham Carter as Dr. Hoffman seemed more interested in booze than in becoming a vampire. Eva Green is a convincing (b)witch. Jackie Earle Haley was Barnabas Collins' thrall - not a character I'd have expected to see him in - yet he was very good.

Loved It!!!!!!

I so enjoyed this movie, I had never seen the show until after seeing the movie on the big screen, But i have to say they brought the characters personality's through to the movie quite well and i would see it over and over again. I give it the highest rating possible.

Nice spin off from the TV series.

Johnny Depp and Tim Burton together again, this is a nice spin off the TV series. It gave Dark Shadows a nice fun twist that made the movie enjoyable.

great remake

i was so happy that it was not a comedy..it was very true to the original series.. Depp is great playing Barnabas.... there were alot of nods to the original series... I'm hoping for a sequel!

loved this movie.... must be great appreciator of satire and the wider your knowledge base and trivia skills and appreciation for word play between centuries the more you will love it do admit ending a little trite but how else could it end?

Not really for fans of the series

As a campy comedy/horror movie, Dark Shadows definitely deliivered. However, as the widow of a huge Dark Shadows fan, i know that he would have really disliked the treatment - no matter how much he liked Johnny Depp and Michelle Pheiffer. From what he told me, the soap opear was dark, moody and gothic with grand drama - all thnings that the movie doesn't really have. There were several significant changes to the origin stories - things that my Dark Shadows knowledgable friends say dramatically change the entire arc of the story.

Othe than the story, the rest of the movie was a gas - the casting seemed spot-on and the actors did an excellent job of inhabiting thiese characters. The sets were grandeose and sweeping which opened the entire thing up and gave it scope. The movie makers also made extensive use of the signature crashing waves - almost to the point of overuse.

I am glad i saw it but it is not a movie I will watch again or purchase on DVD.

GREAT!!

In the start it is alittle slow but then it gets sort of scary and funny! A MUST SEE MOVIE!! I didn't even want to go to the bathroom..... I just wanted to keep watching. I MEAN, JUST GO SEE IT!
