Horror? Comedic horror? Horrific comedy? A bit of all three. The movie is whimsical, funny and scary. Some of the liteness worked, and some of it didn't, Johnny Depp doesn't hold a candle to my childhood memories of Jonathan Frid from the original series. However, had anyone asked me to imagine a whimsical vampire I couldn't have done it before now, but this is some sort of comedy or spoof. Michelle Pfeiffer wears the protective parent and snob well. Helena Bonham Carter as Dr. Hoffman seemed more interested in booze than in becoming a vampire. Eva Green is a convincing (b)witch. Jackie Earle Haley was Barnabas Collins' thrall - not a character I'd have expected to see him in - yet he was very good.

Johnny Depp plays Barnabas so camp its really funny. Wife and both loved it. He can play so many types its hard to not go to see him. Can't wait for The Lone Ranger to come out, ROFL. A few scenes might not be for young kids at all, some blood and very funny sex.

This movie was wonderful. Once again, Johnny Depp has taken on a role and transformed it into something only he can do. He was supported by a great group of actors and actresses who were entertaining in their own right. You were never guessing what was happening or wondering what was transpiring in any given scene. The dialog was great with room for plenty of humor. That was one of the highlights of this movie. Although the story was dark at times, there was plenty of humor to make it fun. If you enjoy Johnny Depp, you will find this movie allows him to show his talent. And Tim Burton's genius is also quite evident. You have to see it to believe me!

Nice spin off from the TV series.

Johnny Depp and Tim Burton together again, this is a nice spin off the TV series. It gave Dark Shadows a nice fun twist that made the movie enjoyable.

If you like Johnny Depp you will love this movie. It is not as gory as The Barber one, better acting and it really is funny. It sets you up for a Sequel???? Hopefully. Go, get lots of popcorn but no drink, you do not want to leave for a minute.

Dark and Funny

Ok, so I went and saw Dark Shadows last night... and I want to see it again! The characters where spot on to the original soap opera, with using only a small amount of creative changes to some characters. I was NOT disappointed in any way !
I would recommend this movie at a high scale of 10.

We really enjoyed it. We are from that era so it was fun going back in time. Johnny Depp is a great actor, he really gets into his character. I would see it again and recommend it to others.

Loved It!!!!!!

I so enjoyed this movie, I had never seen the show until after seeing the movie on the big screen, But i have to say they brought the characters personality's through to the movie quite well and i would see it over and over again. I give it the highest rating possible.

It sort of lagged at the end, but I loved it. If you are a fan of the original show, you will love this spoof of it. Johnny Depp is brilliant, as always. I hope there is a sequel.

So much promise....

This should have been the summer's best cult movie. Campy? Check! Atmospheric? Uhm. OK. Check(ish). Homage to the original series? Close enough. Over-the-top acting? Of course. Johnny Depp being Johnny Depp. Oh, yes. The movie was cruising right along. And then somebody decided to throw the kitchen sink at the whole house of cards. The ending was totally limp. So much hype. So much promise. So little payoff.

I could not wait to see what Johnny Depp was going to do with this roll. I looked at the supporting cast and thought it could not miss, and I saw the previews thinking it would be a laugh fest. I could not have been more disappointed. Slow, plodding, unfunny. Even the most talented sometimes miss the mark...such is the case here

Loved it!

I loved the film Dark Shadows!! It completely had that 1970's look and feel to it and I remember watching the Television show as a kid. It obviously isn't that scary and of course Barnabas Collins is a very baroque hero. He does very bad things but he is sorry for most of them. The villain was perfect! I always love the pairing of Tim Burton and Johnny Depp and also Helena Bohnam Carter . Hats off also to the makeup and clothing teams because everyone looked amazing and Michelle looked especially "posh" and she made me think of my mom. Just loved it all!

Its not a bad movie. Its not a good movie. I will have to see it again at some point and give it another shot but I just felt there were so many plot lines but none of them were fully developed. There were all sorts of paranormal beings, a love story, a family story, a rivalry...but I didn't feel attached to any of the characters or plot lines. However, its Johhny Depp and he is amazing and tim Burton always provides visually stimulating movies so its not the worst movie you can see this weekend.,

Not what I exspected

I totally thought it was a waste of time and money. I've only felt this way about a movie I've paid to see once before and I ended up walking out on the movie. The jokes that were made in the movie left me with a straight face and the plot was so stupid along with the ending. I give this movie a FAIL smh. Sorry to all you Johnny Depp fans but the only reason why you would like this is because Johnny Depp is a great actor. I guess I can't picture a vampire being a comedian behind certain plots. When you think Dark Shadows, you would think this is going to be scary, not funny....and it wasn't even that funny at that!

I enjoyed it.

Dark shadows is not the best movie I've ever seen, but it is far from the worst. I thought it was entertaining and funny. Sure, some of the jokes were telegraphed ahead of time, but they were well played. Plot was about as well constructed as any soap opera. I'd recommend it, but I probably wouldn't watch it again.
