Very good, but wouldn't call it excellent.

Overall, I thought it was a very good movie, but I also feel I would have liked it a lot better if I hadn't read the book. So if you haven't read it, absolutely go see this film. If you have, I still recommend it, but not as highly. The acting was superb and the visual effects were simply stunning. There were times I had a hard time distinguishing CG from reality. And, for the most part, they did a good job of converting the book into a movie, which is always tricky. While I didn't like some of the changes about Pi's life in India, I could understand the purpose, and they handled it reasonably well. But the changes to the story on the lifeboat really bothered me. Some of the most dramatic scenes in the book were changed/removed to make room for dramatic scenes that didn't happen. More importantly, it drastically changed Pi's relationship with Richard Parker, making the story more heartwarming and less realistic. To me, the realism is what made the book so utterly compelling. 4/5 stars.

    Spectacular filmmaking

I saw this film a few weeks ago, and I am still thinking about it now. Dazzling cinematography. Do spend the money to see it in 3D, as there are a few neat tricks that wouild otherwise be missed. Go see the movie also for the spiritual journey and the spiritual metaphors.

Good movie, fair adaptaion to the book

    by jeff_

The movie stands alone as a good story. You don't have to read to book to appreciate it. It is a fair adaptation to the book, condensed to some degree, yet faithful to the story.

    Life of Pi

An amazingly beautiful movie! Ang Lee's vision has a remarkable depth. I was VERY surprised to see children in the theater. Unless you have an emotionally mature child, this is NOT a movie for children, despite the 3D version. Wonderfully acted by all the Pis, young and older.

A Feast for the Eyes and Nourishment for the Spirit

    by mvgr

I wish I had see Life of Pi in 3D. Even so, the cinematography was phenomenal! I found that Pi's suffering parallels the suffering of Job in the Bible. Also, Pi's rewards parallel Job's as well. I do caution against bringing young children to this film. I would set my youngest viewers at age 9 or 10.

    Beautiful

This movie did the film justice. It was so beautiful! ... I wish they showed the part in the book when he showed the interviewers that bananas did float.. STILL AMAZING NEVERTHELESS.

    Life of Pi

A thought provoking, visually stunning movie. I did not read the boo, but I think I will after seeing the movie and see how they compare. Not recommended for younger children as there is some violence and the subject matter may be "over their heads".

    Life of PI

I would recommend this to anyone who loves a good story. If you
have attention deficit syndrome, go see another. This takes Focus
but grabs you after your patience and won't let go! What an amazing story!
The actors were engaging and the scenes with the tiger on the ocean are
unforgettable! I will certainly go see it again.

Didn't read the book but my 11 year old grandson had and we saw it together - it was very beautiful and moving and since he read the book he loved the movie as it followed the book enough to please him.

I enjoyed the filming and the story - so beautiful. A must see movie.

Took my wife and three children (including two teenagers) and all enjoyed it. We discussed the movie afterward and it was a good discussion. Very interesting movie!

    Life of Pi

A very enjoyable movie, good but not great. The first half hour was a bit slow then picked up when Pi and the animals were shipwrecked on the ocean. Wonderful scenes with the animals especially the bengal tiger. Cinematography was excellent.. Not for young kids as the animals kill each other for food.

    Pretty Boring

    by micah68

I like cerebral movies but this one was too long - clocking in at 2 hours and 5 minutes. We saw it in 3-D so it made some of the scenes absolutely beautiful ant the actor who played the young Pi did a pretty good job of carrying the movie but it still was just monotonous. I kept waiting for it to end but it didn't.

Life of Pi: Did you say that Tiger was My Mother the Cannibal? What?

I am completely lost by this film. Boy talks to Canadian reporter, says his story will explain meaning of God: (a) He gets on a ship where Gerard Dapardieu is a racist food server; (b) Gets in shipwreck; (c) Gets in lifeboat; (d) Tiger and zebra and urangutan and hyena all hide under his lifeboat canvas and come out to eat each other while boy shouts "No! No!" (easy to translate); (e) Boy and tiger make friends, then float to an island with a million meercats, but island is carnivorous, so tiger and boy get back on lifeboat and float to Mexico; (f) Boy is interviewed in last 2 minutes of film by Japanese insurance investigators who say "Your story isn't true"; (g) Boy replies "Well, OK, would you like it better if I told you the tiger was my mother, and Gerard Depardieu was the hyena, and the zebra was the Chinese tourist, but they all ate each other and I alone survived?" Or was Gerard Depardieu the tiger, and boy's mother the zebra. Or maybe the Chinese tourist was Depardieu. What?

    Life of Pi

Great movie and a perfect realization of the book, which I also loved. All the actors (including the tiger!) were terrific and the production values were outstanding. The 2+ hours zipped by. Not for small children, though, because of several gory (but necessary) scenes.
