Quentin Unchained
This film studiously hits the high notes and low notes requisite to a true Tarantino gumbo...and then adds a huge jolt of Chipotle Tabasco. Through the captivatingly charming, polished and poignant performance of (a new favorite for this viewer) Christophe Waltz and a stellar cast, Tarantino marches determinedly to his own inner symphony while still remaining true to the themes and genres he depicts. There is many a beat that resonates, and many others strike dischordant arpeggios. Certain strains of melody veer into the unexpected, but, few miss to evoke subjective conscious experience. The concept of weltschmerz has never been more clearly illustrated or executed in modern cinema. Happily, for this viewer,Tarantino reveals a truly European sensibility imperceptible in previous work. The agony permeating this film is abiding and acute. But, thankfully, as fans of Leone, Eastwood and now, Tarantino, have demonstrated, vergeltung is sweet!!
