Okay but definitely not worth wait

    by

We were hyped up when the trailer came out. But then we saw it and left the theater in a "it was okay" kind of mood. Oz (Harry from Spiderman) was okay but his acting could've been better. The special effects were cool but that was about it. Definitely not worth seeing a second time.

    Visually good, substantively awful

    by 40Hz

The acting, story line, and pace were not good. Mila Kunis did a good job, but the rest of the cast and the story were completely forgettable. This movie was a waste of time and money.

    So Disappointed ...

    by Finch45

I expected more from this movie spacial because of just the title alone, OZ. The movie was very poorly made, Graphics were to fake looking, out of place in a sense and the acting was unrealistic as well. I believe i enjoyed only one sense in this move and it was a very short one. I say wait for this movie to be put out on some media platform if you must see it, and save your money for a better movie that is playing in a theater.

    A New Classic

I think the people who were dissapointed by this movie were expecting a different version of the MGM movie the Wizard of OZ. This is the prequel, which explains a lot of the story line , of course with techniques from 2013. The other complaint I heard was frrom people who saw the musical Wicked... which I did not. I thought the movie was fun, kept movie and the kids in the theatre seemed to love it. The China doll was a great character and James Franco was perfect for OZ. I know they wanted Robert Downey Jr or Johnny Depp but I think James Franco did a divine job. At first I was worried that 2 hours was way too long, but I never noticed the time .... isn't that when you know its good... when you get involved in the story and forget your at the theatre at all.

    Oz the Great and Powerful

    by ruthgaa

This is a great addition to the Wizard of Oz collection. I am an Oz buff and have dozens of collectibles. For those of you who do not think it ties in with the original you are sadly mistaken.
I though Disney did a great job of coming up with an entertaining movie, colorful, humerous and a movie that is well worth seeing on the big screen. I do not recommend it for really young kids unless you know your kids really well. There were some frightening scenes with the dark forest and the flying monkeys. GO SEE IT while it is still at the movies.

    Under 40?

    by

Go! Charming flick for the youngsters, But if you're over 50.... the feeling can't be replicated about how we felt the first time, or the second time..... or fifteenth time, we saw "The Wizard of Oz" on Thanksgiving night, on the home TV.
I felt the same emptiness, when I saw "Wicked", so it's nobodies fault. Must be a generational 'thing'.

    Very Disappointing

    by Rplnpty

The movie seemed long and drawn out, boring at times. Not very exciting. I have never walked out of a movie, but this time I almost did. This movie is an embarrassment to the entire "OZ" legacy. Actors were terrible. I found it very hard to sit through the entire movie and really think it is not worth paying to see. The end was the best part but it took forever to get there. I was getting very impatient for something to happen but it just didn't deliver for me. I would say that I was actually very disappointed. Don't waste your money.

    Wait for DVD

    by

Comparatively (to the original) I expected to be lost in just an amazing story with convincing performers. While I did enjoy the story line, I did not enjoy the over the top computer effects the first half of the movie. The dancing Munchkins were obviously not dancing on their own and left me highly disappointed. The end of the movie was wonderful.

Ultimately, I was left feeling like there are no decent choreographers or performers left to support such a wonderful story line. The actors and actresses were great. But they were nothing compared to the magic they created decades ago.

.... and there was no singing. NONE!

Wait for it to come out on DVD.

    Almost Seamless Prequel

I read a professional review before seeing the film. He didn't say much about the plot. I anticipated the major plot turns during the film; the writers were heavy handed with foreshadowing (I write plays but nothing produced yet). However, I would have been upset to have known them beforehand. They seemed so evident from the writing. That said, my husband did not expect most of them and he's usually good at predicting endings. My only other complaints are James Franco's speech, which sounds like Brando's a bit and is equally distracting, and the costumes of the three witches, which makes them stand out as modern from the story, other costumes, and general ambiance. Maybe Raimi wanted that? Anyway, now that I've gotten the poor stuff out of the way, everything else about the film from the opening to the ending create a world that hints at the original film warmly but not clumsily and tells a riveting tale with characters that all develop consistently with their roles. A new classic.

You need to be 7 years old

    by jcbsn5

This is a movie great for kids. They will be happy to see it. As for Disney, I think they missed a wider audience opportunity with this brand. Too bad cause I know there were about a dozen books about Oz when I was a kid. Too low in the age demo, bored to tears, wanted to walk out,

Nothing Great about this Oz--only mediocre

I kept thinking I was watching a made for TV version of Oz. There is nothing magical here, the wizard (James Franco) wasn't, the castle wasn't, Theodora (Mila Kunis) wasn't. It's amazing how a 1939 fim with little technogy and only ingenuity and creativity could outshine a modern day, multi-million dollar production. The movie's concept was inconsistent. The biggest letdown for me was that the witches were witch-like and supernatural only some times, but mostly human. It kept me from feeling like I was at Oz, from believing the other world. Not to say the movie didn't have it's pluses--Michelle Williams as Glenda saved the movie, the final showdown was good, and Rachel Weitz was great, as always. The CGI was third rate, didn't match for most of the movie. Knowledgeable fans will be dissappointed. Newbies will be entertained.

    Disappointed.....poorly executed

The story-line was good, but the screenplay, acting - except for Rachel Weisz, and directing were aweful! Whoever did Casting should be fired! A good start with design, but no follow-through. For general audiences, as a last resort for those who need to keep busy.
Disney does animation very well, but did fail to convincingly transition this fantasy into entertainment.

A Fun Trip Down Nostalgia Lane

    by

Oz The Great and Powerful was good for all its nostalgia and vibrant colors and effects, and that's what I liked most about it. I found myself almost crying when I saw Glenda, grinning from ear to ear when the Munchkins came out, and when the Wicked Witch was borne into existence I felt chills go down my spine. But James Franco is a real clown in this movie, and always seems to have one of three expressions on his face: Cheek-stretching cheerful, brow-furrowing serious, or terrified and screaming. For a moment I could see him as Oz, but then he started speaking, and almost everything he said made me want to slap him and say "You are not Oz. Give me the real Oz." Though the supporting actors and actresses, namely Rachel Weisz and Michelle Williams, were nothing short of amazing and believable. Go for the nostalgia, be prepared for a few bad actors like James Franco and Mila Kunis, and you'll enjoy the FX, the splendor of Oz and have a good time like I did.

    Oz

I liked the movie a lot, but it was a little slow getting to the good stuff. I kept waiting for them to tie in the ruby red slippers since they were so important in the original Wizard of Oz but they didn't. So I wonder if they will remake the Wizard of Oz and continue this story. I did like how they showed how the Green Witch was created. All in all it was a good movie!

    Ok, not great

The film itself was an interesting idea, being told from the wizards perspective, with a few literary differences. I didn't really like some of the actors, thought their performances were a bit lazy.
