    Wished had been better.

    by

I thought the black and white begining was fine, then when they got to Oz they got caught up in trying to do 3D effects and the story got muddled and meandered for awhile. I did like the china doll, good effect. Once they got to where they were going to stand up to the witches and got organized it got good. The end almost saved it, almost. The Emerald city looked like crap, the 1939 City looked better. The costuming was generally good with the exception of Mila Kunis. No offense to her, but really, leather pants? Why? ALL of the other costumes were from the era where Oscar dated from 1909. Then her next dress was more time frame correct but it was just ugly. Also, do we really have to have all those bustier's? Mila's green make up was also lame, she should have been uglier, she didn't look scary, maybe puffy and bloated. Margaret Hamilton was scary and she didn't have to scream and shreak. James Franco did a fair job although he did remind me of the Cheshire Cat too much of the time.

    Underwhelmed

    by

It was ok. That's about all I can say other than I'm glad we went to a matinee and didn't have to pay a full ticket price to see it.

When I saw the trailer for this I thought it was A Stupid Movie, but then i decided to go see this With my Rent. I must admit it's not what i was expecting to be honest, i thought it was going to be some sorta of Reboot of the Original but in ACTUALITY It is a Prequel. The Effect's where Nice the shift from Black & White to Color...& i liked it..there's a Message in there but i'll leave that up to the viewer all i know is that it's a GREAT Movie & Definitely worth Seeing.

OZ the Great and Powerful...it was NOT!

    by Ozmania

I am a HUGE Wizard of Oz fan and so I was looking forward to this movie for years! I was very disappointed to say the least. It did not capture any of the Oz magic of the classic original that made you believe that Oz was a real place. This was supposed to be the prelude to the classic and the story and characters fell flat. I did not like how they made the Wizard to be a "player", that is NOT his character. Hollywood needs to cast movies based on acting ability and NOT looks! Mila Kunis was a horrible Wicked Witch. She did not fit the character and her evilness was very, very forced and unrealistic. Her make-up was horrendous and made her look like a botoxed frog! None of the music was memorable. They should have used the classic Wicked Witch theme when she was flying on her broom and just updated the tune, fans would have gone crazy for it! And it would have tied the two movies together a little. You can wait for the DVD and not miss out on much.

    Great for families!

    by

I really enjoyed the movie and appreciated the tie-in's to the original film. There are a few starling moments but nothing too scary I use your discretion as parents especially with children under the age of six. It was good and I will probably rent it again to watch and enjoy at home when it is available.

Lots of eye-candy, but mediocre writing and acting performances

Title says it all. Special effects are good but not great. Writing and acting are just OK, with James Franco and Mila Kunis delivering very predictable performances.

    Disappointed

The movie was okay. The CGI was terrific. I enjoyed the beginning (before arriving at OZ) as the homage to the original was nice. I thought James Franco, Michelle Williams and Rachel Wiesz gave very good performances. Mila Kunis had a tough pair of shoes to fill following up Margaret Hamilton, the EIPTOME of the Wicked Witch, but she did a good job.

Being a fan of not just the original movie but one who read, and re-read and loved the original series of L. Frank Baum books as a kid, I felt the screenwriters missed the boat by making one major change. The original ruler of OZ was not the father of Glinda. If they would have stuck to the original storyline, they would have had the chance to not only introduce a host of wonderful Oz characters but this could be a real franchise, similar to the Harry Potter series of movies.

    Oz the Great

Oz the Great and Powerful is a very decently made movie. Worth the going to. A little fractured in the storytelling, and what happened to the Red Shoes?--Evanora was supposed to end up with them in the first place, but I digress......The transformations for Theadora and Evanora were visually something to see, the movie kept some of the elements of the original Oz movie...Liked the film overall..The music was good, but the ending credit music...why does there have to be a modern song for a "period" film...spoils it a lot...

I enjoyed the film. It was family friendly and fun. The cast was wonderful, the SFX looked good and I felt like I returned to OZ again.

    SO-SO but Go!

You will envision a number of actors you would have rather seen play the lead instead of James Franco.
He actually came close to ruining the movie for me. Both his acting and physical appearance just didnt bring it home.
At the end, i must say i enjoyed the movie quite a bit.
Its so easy to be critical that there wasnt enough back story on the sisters etc, but at over 2 hours, we got enough.
    Visually stunning!

Beautiful to see, except for the actors

James Franco is astonishing in the paucity of his acting skills and in the short range of emotions he is able to portray. His amateurish performance gives proof that just about anyone can be in a movie. Mila Kunis, whom I have enjoyed in other things, stretches her acting wings and also shows that she has nothing to offer outside of a small range of emotions. The cinematography is beautiful, but the film is filled with C-level actors. Don't waste your money or time.

    So much potential wasted

    by marrs96

Felt like a movie more of missed opportunities rather than actual enjoyment. Baum left a very rich universe of stories that could have made wonderful movies and yet we're obviously instead being given a movie based on a screenplay (which felt like it was written in a focus group) that lacks all that same magic.

Actresses were welled cast, effects were interesting if not a little overwrought, and there were moments that almost made sitting through this worthwhile, but I left very disappointed.

    Surprisingly good

I really enjoyed this movie though I only went because my grandson wanted to go. The characters were believable and engaging--the witches were particularly wicked. The plot itself is predictable but the way it plays out keeps your attention. There's enough action to keep it going but not so much as to put off youngsters (or their parents). Violence is handled artfully. The beginning is a bit slow, but once the wizard arrives in Oz it picks up.

Oz The Great and Powerful is a Must See

This movie has made me want to read the whole L. Frank Baum series again! I haven't read the books since I was a kid. I prefer to read the book first and then see the movie but...
I thought this film was awesome! Very graphic bringing the story to life! Great job to the Director, Sam Raimi
James Franco is a very convincing Oz
Michelle Williams is a very beautiful and powerful Glinda
Mila Kunis as Theodora or more famously the Wicked Witch of the West is less than stellar in this version of Oz
I saw the 1939 movie when I was a child (under 6) but this movie is not for children under 13, parts of the movie very graphic and could cause nightmares.
Go see this movie before it's too late!

    Save your money-Wait for Redbox

I agree that Oz had some lovely visuals but that was not enough to carry this movie. The main characters were weak and not very enjoyable. With a PG rating, it was not a kids movie or an adult movie. I think the studio should have committed one way or the other. A little girl sitting by me kept her eyes closed and held her hands over her ears 50 percent of the time. And did anyone else want to fix that piece of hair for Michelle Williams??
