    Oz the Great and Powerful

    by emc_nyc

OK, I've never reviewed a movie on Fandango. NEVER. I am taking the time to do it because I think, due to the negative media reviews in NYC, that I must!

I don't understand why the papers are giving this one star. The movie is charming, beautifully shot and new. When was the last time Hollywood had a novel idea? This summer, you're going to see a lot of tired alien-based horror movies. At least one, I'm sure, will feature Tom Cruise. (Now THAT'S surprise, right?)

Michelle Williams and Mila Kunis are really good. Rachel Weisz is good. The acting's good. Franco is pretty good. The flying baboon are scary for little kids. I sat with a NYC audience and I haven't heard an audience clap in many years. (We didn't. We are a bit too reserved. But I was clappin' on the inside.)

Go see it. Don't listen to the previewers anymore. Make up your own minds.

PS: I didn't give it a "Must Go" because, as I've said, I'm a bit reserved. But do go....

    I loved it

Although the movie had some corny scenes, I have to give it 5 stars. You have to expect that in movies like this when you an adult. I found it mesmerizing and so fun. It was a great escape from my every day life which is quite stressful. The acting was great and the visual effects were better. I went to a newly renovated theater in my neighborhood and they had full reclining lazy boy type seats and it was the best experience ever. See the movie!

    Oz

    by

Oz, while never quite living up to the magic of the original movie, still makes a very nice companion to it. I didn't quite warm up to James Franco, but I think that's the whole point of the movie....he's not supposed to be a loveable character. It was great seeing sort of a backstory of the characters. If you can go & just enjoy the movie for what it is, you will like if very much. If you go, & compare the two movies, you probably won't.

    Take me to Oz!!

    by

Great movie. Dragged a little in the beginning but boy did it pick up. In no way does it compete with the original classic but yet it is a movie of its own and shows how Oz became Oz. Going to see it a second time!

    For the young at heart

I have loved the Oz books by Baum my entire life and adore the original movie by Warner Bros. This was worth the watch on the big screen even if a little stiff and lifeless by the actors at times It's hard to play to a china doll. I enjoyed the digital effects and animated characters a great deal as they made the whimsy of the movie come out for all ages. The actors were passable and believable when you let yourself be lost like a child in the fantasy of Oz. Otherwise, as an adult, you might be a little too cynical. I would suggest you go to one of those big block buster explosion movies then... I liked it because it wasn't a bunch of vampires, or machines, or future dead earth wars. I liked it because it didn't have a lot of bloody violence and did not take itself too seriously. It had fun where there needed to be fun and was a child's entertainment movie. Go and take your children. Those children around me seemed to enjoy it. I think it is worth a ticket.

    Oz The Great and Boring

Saw this movie yesterday at the premium seating theater, and walked out little over halfway. Can't think of last time have walked out of movie, but movie was pretty bad. It was cheesy, the acting was bad.

The wicked witch part was just dumb and it was a very bad production, looked like the voice was dubbed over which it probably was but it clearly didn't match the character was just wierd. for 300m you think they could make it believable. On the flipside the little porcelin girl graphics were amazing. The flying monkeys......as corny as the original Oz movie flying monkeys were they were still "scary"...these monkey were just LOUD they weren't scary.

When leaving the lady at the counter said we weren't the first ones to leave the movie this week

    OZ The Great and Powerful

    by

While the professional movie critics are not being kind to this movie, I have to say I loved it. Why, because it had the flavor of the original iconic movie that has become a large part of our society.. everybody understands the statement "Toto I Have a feeling were not in Kansas any more." IT means that the normal everyday world has sudden changed and not necessarily for the better. The witches are delightful and while the 'wizard' is no wizard and is a man with feet of clay, in the end he rises, and that is what we are all about, we are flawed and far from perfect but in the right situation, at the right time we can find ourselves answering a higher calling. This is a perfect escape and really does honor the original in flavor and style. Go find OZ the land and OZ the wizard and for a brief moment remember innocence...

    Biggest Let Down!!

This was a waste of time! The CGI effects looked so fake and made you feel like you were watching a bad cartoon from the 80's. The acting was horrible and really cheesy. This could of been so much more if Disney had stayed away from this classic tale. You never really felt like you were pulled into the land of OZ. Even the original Flying Monkeys in Wizard of Oz were better than what was shown in this movie. To this day, Wizard of Oz can still hold an adult audience but this movie will be forgotten quickly. If you liked the remake of Willy Wonka with Johnny Depp then you'll like this movie. If you didn't, then don't waste your time and money. So dissappointed!

Oz The Great and Powerful, answers old questions

    by swysong

This movie answers all the questions one might have about The Wizard of Oz, except where the ruby slippers came from and What part did the Tin Man have????
Liked it very much, we took out Tween son and he enjoyed it too. Laughs were plentiful in the beginning and middle, ending was very dramatic!

    A decent movie

It is hard to review this kind of movie without spoiling it. Suffice to say it's action packed, well-paced, and reasonably well-acted. Some of the "ooh" and "ahh" moments were obviously thrown in specifically for the 3-D crowd, and at times it seems the focus is on "here's what we can do with CGI, kids" rather than the story. But for the most part, this ends up being a heartwarming, though bittersweet tale of an everyman who finds himself swept up (literally) into a strange world. As a prequel to the 1939 film (just roll with it, trust me), this movie serves its purpose as a satisfying origin story, though at times the connections between this movie and the "older" sibling seem forced. Thankfully, these moments are few and far between. In the end, this "Oz" somehow manages to stand on its own despite the minor flaws I mentioned.

    Save yourself 2 hours

It wasn't the worst I've seen by far but it didn't work for me. My 17 year old and 14 year as well as myself basically found the movie to be a bit of a joke. My 9 year old was entertained, however. I think for little kids it might be good. Pretty bad for adults.

    Modern Twist on Classic Tale

Nice telling of the story from the other side of the Wizard. Great Disney effects and graphics as you would expect from Disney. The supporting characters help make the story. Worth going to the theater to see. Mila Kunis did an amazing job playing the Wicked Witch.

    Not powerful nor great.

If you're expecting to feel the same magic from The Wizard of Oz, prepare for disappointment.

James Franco did a decent job with his acting. Mila Kunis is definitely not suited for the villainess character. The movie really drags on to get to the ******* point. The beginning starts off wells; however, the story between is just boring. It's didn't really go anywhere, even when they meet the "Evil" witch.

Not until the good guys breach Emerald City does it regain the suspense. Humor is nowhere to be found in this movie either. Unless you're a 12 year old. But I digress, the movie isn't that bad. Needs a lot of work and Sam Raimi might want to do the same.

    Very disappointed

Pass on this one. .James Franco and his up close intense facial expressions are hard to take. I like Michelle Williams but her portrayal of Glenda was slow and laboring.
The movie was hokey and a big disappointment.
