A "Fun" movie- better than the original, in some ways

    by

A Great show! The first segment was a bit too cheesy, but once Oz is in Oz- it turned into quite a fun show. The characters were good, as was the animation. I thought that James Frano did an excellent job. The movie was a bit "silly" at times, but they played off that well, and I thought the last 20 minutes or so were absolutely great. I'd have to say that next to James Franco, Bill Cobbs made the show (well, they were both outdone by Finley & China Girl (Honestly Yourself!)

    THE BEST PREQUEL

This is a must see. Oz is a movie about overcoming your own negative self thoughts. It reminds us that we must dream, but not for the impossible but for what;s right inside of you. Take your God-given talents, refine them and use them to your best of ability. Also it shows that when you use these talents to serve others--- your life is richer and better. And others benefit too.

Please go see it, not suitlable for children under 10 years.

    oz

this film deserved much better from the critics. This film was fun, entertaining and certainly presents a believable prequel for the wizard of Oz -- as believable as you let your imagination go with th Wizard of Oz in the first place. Amust see film.

Fantastic Movie and Nice Complement to the Original - FIVE STARS!

My 7 year old daughter and I saw this in 3D and loved it! Destined to become a classic complement to the original blockbuster, the move explains the origins of the Wizard and Witches. I'm assuming there will be another movie to tie in other characters like the tin man, etc. So many movies today use crass language, violence, or sexual content. This movie is void of that nonsense, but very scary, just like the original.

If you don't like this movie, you need to check for a pulse. Five stars. A must see.

I wanted to click my heals and be home!

    by lemjam

First of all this is isn't a sequel. Its a "remake" of one of the most beloved movies of all time which was simply a good vs evil plot that was easy to follow. This movie was confusing. The intro of the wizard was great as it gave some context to how he was a "wizard" from circus to Oz was a big leap but it did work. The problem arises with the introduction of a trio of witches. One is bad, one is heart broken and then made evil and one is good. For the record the actress who played Glenda was cast perfectly and was amazing. It was so"Disney" as the "middle witch" is asked to take a bite of an apple AKA .. Snow White and becomes evil. The plot is a bit modern day gread too. The wizard is asked to kill the wicked witch with his underlying motive to earn the riches of Oz (Gold lots of it). Again the innocence of the original was lost with the introducution of a "kill for riches" theme. The end is creative but the witches dont die they fly away. I promise. There will a be a Oz "2".

Not the Oz I was expecting

    by

Horrible acting killed this movie. They made a mistake casting James Franco as the great powerful Oz. Mila Kunis wins for her looks but not her acting. There were some funny moments but I was never really into the film. The China girl was my favorite character. At least she was more believable than Oz.

    Oz Inspiring

    by LA_Real

Here's the thing: If you are of the age or temporament to subscribe to reverential treatment of the 1939 movie classic...then prepare to be mildly miffed with Sam Raimi's effort and his questionable casting. But if you are open minded to the idea of being transported back to a world that only the 1939 version gave you access to then I think you are in for a treat. TWOO is, like the original Star Wars, untouchable to many fans. There is no way to avoid comparison and almost no way to advance the story without meeting criticism. I think, given the challenging circumstances, that OTGAP does a nice job of advancing the storyline in a way that answers basic questions that were never answered by the original (and maybe were better off left unanswered to some folks) while setting the stage for more adventures leading up to Dorothy's descent onto the yellow brick road. Yes, James Franco and the radiant Mila Kunis are weak points. Yes, the plot is a little predictable. But I give it a thumbs up

    Oz the Pretty Good

    by aph628

Of course, nothing can compare to the magic of the 1939 classic, but Oz still proves to be wild fun on its own. With some suburb visuals and better than worse acting, Oz is an escape back into the world we all love. The most enjoyable characters being an adorably loyal monkey (Braff) and a deliciously evil witch (Weisz). Joey King proves again she isn't praised just because she's cute, however, Mila Kunis leaves much to be desired in what should have been a stand out role for her. Overall, it is worth seeing, even if it is not perfect.

    Oz the Great and Powerful????

I went to this movie with my grown daughter and my 8 year old grandaughter. We went into this movie expecting to be blown away by the story and special effects for the modern day version of OZ. We were pretty disappointed, kept looking at each other during the movie asking when is this thing going to get good? Can you say pretty corny! This random china doll appears in the movie and seems to be very out of place!? The witches were pretty good in their roles. James Franco was pretty boring. I am sure my grand daughter liked it for all the color and special effects, but save your money....definitely not worth it!

    Great visuals and funny

Overall I liked the movie, I did not see the 3D version since I do not care for it. BUT this movie may have been great in 3D. Funny, good story and some connection to the original movie. I would see it again. Another great film by Sam Raimi!

    Terrible Movie

    by

The acting was terrible in this movie and I didn't like the way the story was written. I wish I could have my two hours of my life back.

Great Prequel with obvious hopes of a hit franchise

    by

The Land of Oz comes alive in vivid imagery that was thought impossible when the original MGM film came out. Today's technology is put to good use bringing to life the extraordinary land created by Frank L. Baum. For those expecting a familiar Oz story this won't be it. This film focuses on how a Kansas Magician came to be "The Wizard of Oz." In this mission the film succeeds. The film cleverly details how Oz puts on the greatest illusion of his career and winning over the people of Oz in the process. Along the way we get glimpses of the back stories of the witches of Oz. It is true, these stories seem rushed and incomplete. However as previously noted that wasn't the purpose of the film. As noted in interviews with the filmmakers the goal was to create a fairy tale film that focused on a male protagonist. Mission accomplished. It's easy to see how Franco's Oz can easily age into the rambling, stuttering wizard from the MGM film.

It's a GREAT prequel to the classic Wizard of Oz

Everyone has seen the Judy Garland classic Wizard of Oz as a child. This movie is a perfect prequel to understanding how things could have fallen into place for that wondrous classic for the child in all of us. Those who rate this 'so-so' cannot be in touch with their inner child. I was amazed at how well it fit into the original story line. It makes me wonder if there will be a remake of the original. I, for one, would love to see them do that and take into consideration the other worthwhile book renditions of the Oz series. We'll see...

    Eh,

Some of you may hate me afterwards but to be honest.... It isn't nothing I haven't seen.....It's nothing new just some retelling and well if you love The Wizard of Oz, You'll love it. Otherwise don't spend your money people. Honestly some movie magic isn't enough anymore. One may argue my case but it isn't worth it. Sorry , not sorry.

    SoSo

Its not good when the main characters are less impressive than the secondary. the Oz character it seems punch lines were VERY week. Although the porcelian girl was hillarious, as well as the flying monkey, and ditzy assistants at the very beginning of the movie. I would love to see this movie agian on television but definitely NOT at the theatre.
