    ok but not blockbuster material.

Yet again, another movie in which they try to compensate bad writing with colorful imagery. It goes without saying, but don't go in to this movie with anything approaching "Wizard of Oz" expectations. franco is a lackluster Oz, Kunis and Weisz are ok, Williams is better. The best characters in the movie are Braffs Finley and Kings China girl, and they're CGI!

    Oz The Great and Powerful

    by

Beautiful cinematography. Vibrant colors & over the top. Just as you'd expect. A nice back story to the Wizard of Oz. Neat how it all ties together.

    Prequel of the Oz

My husband and I went, and it's a good movie if your a fan of the Oz movies or books. It is a prequel and shows you how Oz became the great and powerful as well as some back story on the other characters. Effects and design were good.

    Gorgeous experience

    by

We enjoyed the movie a great deal. It has a great story line, beautiful imagery, good acting and amazing costuming. I was very impressed with all of it.

    It Was Ok

This movie was way over hyped and over advertised. While the movie did have amazing graphics and background information for the great oldie Wizard of Oz, but it did not have the wow factor that most were looking for. This movie is not worth the $12 when it should be more of a 1 cent movie. The characters, in hindsight, were rather witty and had interesting personas, but not even the cute characters could make up for the bad writing. The beginning moved to slow and then slowed down to a snail's speed.

In conclusion, good accessories (characters, cinematography, animation, acting, and costumes) but HORRIBLE writing and overall plot line.

Oz The Great and Powerful, psych!

    by daneddy

The special effects were outstanding and I liked all of the actors, though James Franco couldn't quite muster the charisma required to be a charlatan. He was still enjoyable and worked well with the others. The ladies did well (was Michelle still being Marilyn?), though Mila Kunis was a better witch in Black Swan. The real weakness of this movie is in not utilizing more of the original Oz lore and creating a richer and more complex plot (and Oz backstory). The "big surprise" was very predictable, and Glinda's relationship to both The Wizard and the ruling family of Oz didn't quite cut it for me. I did enjoy the movie on a childlike level and as I said the effects were quite good, even if the 3D tended to the obvious. Perhaps a little scary for young kids (espcially the flying baboons, yikes), but I'd still recommend seeing it on the big screen for maximum effect. I'm not sure how much I want to see a sequel because they didn't work enough with the Oz Mythology to keep my interest.

    enjoyable

from the beginning, it felt as if i was watching the original all over again. the characters are unique and no-one overacts. the colors were fantastic on the eyes, the story even at 2hours 10minutes seemed to move along and felt more like 30 minutes. i took my 4 and 8 yr old girls and there were a few scary parts for the 4 year old, but nothing that would keep them up at night. i read that a sequal is in the works but the way it ended seemed like they made a seemless transition to the wizard of OZ. but i'm up for a part 2.

    Loved Oz

    by noloser

I wish I would have seen it in 3D. It was really entertaining and can only imagine how great it would be in 3D. May have to go again.

    Great VFX!!!

Sam Raimi surprised me. He still had his corky cheesy humor with stunning visual effects. The effect were by far the best I have seen since Oscar Winner Life of Pi. Disney still had its heart warming moments and messages that go with any Disney movie which makes it great for the family. This is defiantly a must see!

    Fell asleep while the kids

The movie went on and on and on. The sister witch trio overly complicated things...the wicked witch's castle was actually in Emerald City and everything gets screwy. Worthy of watching it on VOD at home at some point, but don't waste your money on this one.

    Fabulous

I loved this movie! Casting was spot on and the story was absolutely marvelous!! I am hoping to see it again before it escapes the movie theaters.

More Lame Than Great or Powerful

James Franco simply can't carry the weight of the role. Too often the movie drags when he is central in the scene. Mila Kunis starts off well but is not nearly wicked enough to scare or intimidate. Her makeup for the wicked witch was almost laughable...perfect green skin; raised eyebrows and a large nose do not make for a wicked look.

Highlights were Rachel Weisz as a wicked sister and Joey King as the voice of the China Doll.

    SO-SO but Go!

    by bogiebj

You will envision a number of actors you would have rather seen play the lead instead of James Franco.
He actually came close to ruining the movie for me. Both his acting and physical appearance just didnt bring it home.
At the end, i must say i enjoyed the movie quite a bit.
Its so easy to be critical that there wasnt enough back story on the sisters etc, but at over 2 hours, we got enough.
    Visually stunning!

    Could be better

Cast was ok but Michelle Williams brought the best performance. You could tell where the green screen was, when actors "flew" you could tell they were being pulled by a pulley. It was not believable that you were in Oz. It felt like you were filming it. James Franco's acting was flat. My kids loved it so that's all that mattered!
