    For the young at heart

I have loved the Oz books by Baum my entire life and adore the original movie by Warner Bros. This was worth the watch on the big screen even if a little stiff and lifeless by the actors at times It's hard to play to a china doll. I enjoyed the digital effects and animated characters a great deal as they made the whimsy of the movie come out for all ages. The actors were passable and believable when you let yourself be lost like a child in the fantasy of Oz. Otherwise, as an adult, you might be a little too cynical. I would suggest you go to one of those big block buster explosion movies then... I liked it because it wasn't a bunch of vampires, or machines, or future dead earth wars. I liked it because it didn't have a lot of bloody violence and did not take itself too seriously. It had fun where there needed to be fun and was a child's entertainment movie. Go and take your children. Those children around me seemed to enjoy it. I think it is worth a ticket.

    Let's Pause Oz

    by

Disney has a way of making Disney films right? This wasn't that bad but it wasn't that good either. It's really just a "big kids" movie if you ask me. It had potential but the loose story line factored in with a bit of over acting all wrapped up in too much CGI leaves guys like me wanting his money back. It's a rental but even then you'll probably be playing games on your phone while watching.

Oz was ok - but you can wait until it comes out on DVD

This movie was just so-so. It was slow in the beginning and grew more interesting later on. Still there was nothing about this movie that made it a must see at the theater. The story was predictable. The effects were good, but then that much can be said about many movies. Overall I would say don't waste your money.

    Oz, a little slow but

The movie started out slow but I spent that time trying to piece the parts of the classic movie to this prequel. All in all an enjoyable movie. No Oscar winner but good.

Perfect date night movie with my 9 year old daughter

We thought that this movie was really good! I went hoping and praying that it'd be appropriate to view with my 9 year old daughter....and it was! She was entranced the entire time, We will be buying it when it's released on DVD because I'd love to share it with my husband and son. It was candy for the eyes and safe to watch with the kiddos. I'll be buying it in 3D though, because that seems like what it was made for!

    Story of a misunderstanding.

Overall effects and scenes were pretty great and costume design was nice. Mila's face makeup was really bizarre and distracting. The plot was pretty stupid and the "good guys" are annoying, I was almost rooting for the bad guys just because they seemed cooler. If you want to see nice scenes and CG go for it.

    enjoyable

from the beginning, it felt as if i was watching the original all over again. the characters are unique and no-one overacts. the colors were fantastic on the eyes, the story even at 2hours 10minutes seemed to move along and felt more like 30 minutes. i took my 4 and 8 yr old girls and there were a few scary parts for the 4 year old, but nothing that would keep them up at night. i read that a sequal is in the works but the way it ended seemed like they made a seemless transition to the wizard of OZ. but i'm up for a part 2.

No Dorothy and Toto But Pretty Good

    by

    Oz The Great and Powerful

It was hard not to compare this movie to the original. I kept looking for Dorothy and Toto.

In general it was pretty good. (Spoiler Alert) the beginning had a great homage to the beginning of the original. There were several others nods to the first film.

There were a few unexpecteds which helped the movie roll along at an even pace.

The actors did a wonderful job. Franco played a great con man.

All in all it was pretty good. It is not really for young kids seven though it's rated PG.

    WONDERFUL ESCAPE FILM FOR EVERYONE

    by

And I would highly suggest before it leaves theatres to see it ON THE BIG SCREEN! The Wizard of Oz is one of my top 5 fave movies of all time...I am 47 and still love that film. This really tied in with that film. How a young lady with the same last name as Dorothy, presumbly that Auntie Em in the beginning to the WICKED WITH OF THE WEST/EAST twist, it set it all up in a wonderful way. everyone in the film was good, visually stunning, I don't want to give anything way, but you will definitely go over the rainbow again! James Franco A+. Go see it! Thanks for a great film and it is not a musical by the way! Dennis

    Great oz

    by etowens

And great it was. I took my Grandkids to see this thinking they would really enjoy it. They certainly did but the added bonus was that so did I ! I loved it and it brought back childhood memories with the black and white start to the movie.I would recommend this to anyone of any age. The graphics were outstanding and the story line was excellent. Go see it .

    Oz the Great and Powerful

    by emc_nyc

OK, I've never reviewed a movie on Fandango. NEVER. I am taking the time to do it because I think, due to the negative media reviews in NYC, that I must!

I don't understand why the papers are giving this one star. The movie is charming, beautifully shot and new. When was the last time Hollywood had a novel idea? This summer, you're going to see a lot of tired alien-based horror movies. At least one, I'm sure, will feature Tom Cruise. (Now THAT'S surprise, right?)

Michelle Williams and Mila Kunis are really good. Rachel Weisz is good. The acting's good. Franco is pretty good. The flying baboon are scary for little kids. I sat with a NYC audience and I haven't heard an audience clap in many years. (We didn't. We are a bit too reserved. But I was clappin' on the inside.)

Go see it. Don't listen to the previewers anymore. Make up your own minds.

PS: I didn't give it a "Must Go" because, as I've said, I'm a bit reserved. But do go....

    Decent Movie In the End

    by

It started off very slow, but the movie was decent overall. The acting was good, but the story line could have been a little more adventurous.

    Truly Enjoyed

    by

As a family we truly enjoyed this movie. Typically we do not see 3D because we all wear glasses but this is one that would have been wonderful to see 3D.

This movie was a bit too scary at times for the children under 12.

    Stick with the original.

    by amf28

It was visually entertaining, but, that's where it ends. James Franco was actually the most relatable character. All 3 witches were just plain sad to watch. Rachel Weisz had some really good moments, but, that's that there was! Moments! Don't waste your time and money, and just watch the original with Judy Garland.
