    Strange

Oz was made for 3D. If I had elected to see it in 3D I more than likely would have enjoyed the flowers blooming a tad more. AS it was though, not something I would recommend. The wicked witch was poorly cast. I just can't seem to not see Mila Kunis in some basement with a bunch of stoners. It's that voice !! She needs voice and acting lessons. Everyone was poorly directed and stiff. James Franco came off as a sexual predator that we are supposed to cheer for in the end. He needed to have a unfortunate accident. There was no moral story there only vanity, jealousy, greed, all of the sins then some!!

    Not what I expected

    by

Previews for this movie made me think it would be among the ranks of Avatar or other more action/adventure yet fantasy movies. It was not. This is a very cheesy movie made for the enjoyment of children. The acting is over-the-top and meant to please children, and the action scenes are predictable and dull. While the movie had some merit, I would not see it again.

    i just, i just don't get it..

why oh why does every great classic film have to be remade and/or have some lackluster prequel/sequel made for it?? this movie was awwwwwfuuulllll.. jokes were corny, uplifting parts weren't uplifting.. the villain just looks flat out ridiculous, the original witch from the old movie is more believable for crying out loud.. LEAVE CLASSICS ALONE, this was a nightmare, and that is coming from a huge james franco fan..

    Entertaining Prequel

First off you have to go into this movie with a clear mind, not trying to compare it to the classic Wizard of Oz. This one isn't a musical. The characters are not as strong as the Wizard of Oz. This story sets the path to how the wizard and witches of Oz developed into their being. Visually well done and an entertaining movie for both kids and adults. Sam Raimi is brave to take on this movie knowing that it's a huge challenge living up to the original, but I feel he has done a wonderful job.

    Oz The Great and Powerful

Special effects were great. I thought the story was lacking. It was okay but i caught myself checking my watch waiting for it to end. Not a good sign!

    Wonderful Land of Oz

This was a very great movie, and I consider it child-friendly. It was not violent, there was no sex or cursing. It was a true magical Disney adventure. I think it did a great combination of the books and the original 1939 film. It was the kind of fantasy-movie that, when the camera panned over the beautiful scenery, I wanted to just jump in the screen and explore the re-imagining of Oz, which has not happened in a long time for me. It was imaginative, funny, and exciting. I felt like I was glued to my seat the whole time.

My mother and I saw it, and we are big fans of the original film/books. I honestly don't understand why anyone would dislike this movie, and I think that if anyone considers this film inappropriate to children is reading too much into it. There were plenty of references to Frank Baum, his books, and the original film that you had to be fairly alert to notice, and the story itself was well-paced and showed progress in the character's physical and emotional journey.

    Interesting...

The movie is visually stunning and it seems to be well cast. Prequels like this always seem a bit contrived in having to explain the parts of the story that you know will happen. This really applied here so it was hard to feel any suspense as to what was going to happen.
Still, it was an interesting story with the Dorothy character being transformed into the Wizard setting up the story that we all know and love.

    Exciting for kids

Definitely a kids movie. Magical and adventurous with suspense throughout. For the adults who are comparing this to the Wizard of Oz you will be a little disappointed. If you're a child with little to compare against its great. I took my three kids and they loved it and the many of the kids in the theater applauded at the end. So relax and enjoy the ride with your kids or if you're an old curmudgeon - wait for it to come out on beta and then complain in the comfort of your ez-chair about how it's not like the original.

Good if you LOVED the original

    by hydeeez

My husbanded pretty much hated this movie and my 9 year old son was completely disinterested. It was quirky, had similar themes to the original movie (characters in reality appeared in OZ). I enjoyed the movie but you can't compare it to movies that are coming out now because if you did, this one would just seem hokey.

    Wholesome and Hokie

Story line is good. Special effects decent. Beginning reminiscent of the original wizard of oz. Where this movie faults is it tries too hard to blend the two styles 30's culture with modern day. It needed to make the full transition to modern day language, special effects, music, storyline etc. James Franco's acting was forgettable. Not enough character development.

    Oz the great and powerful

    by nd94598

Great for kids. Good animation, creative characters and adventures. More action than story. It was good entertainment. I have read all the frank Baum Oz books and it made me want to go read them again.
I rate it a plus go see it.

    Family Entertainment

    by

"Oz" is a good entertaining movie for the family. i found it very enjoyable to watch. Disney did a great job of filling in the history of the "Wizard". And if you watch closely you will notice some subtle references to the 1939 classic. James Franco This is a movie worth going to see. Don't wait for it to become available for "on demand" or DVD. They won't compare to the "Big Screen" experience.

    Oz - the Disappointing

I suppose after all the hype that expectations were unreachably high, but I was disappointed in the effort. Some blame it on the casting, wchich I found to be mostly very good. I did not like the overall pacing which led to many slow parts. Could be a good kids movie, but the flying monkees were horrifyingly real to little kiddies. The rest of the movie was too childlike for adults. Beautiful graphics, though. Visually stunning in many parts. I'm sure the baloon ride in 3-D would be astounding!

    Oz the Dull and Vacuous

Horrible. Don't go. The writing is sophmoric. The plot is boring and slow-moving. The characters are predictable and two dimensional. The acting was just average, although James Franco was well below the average. You'll be tired of the camera closeups on his creepy smile about 10 minutes in. What flop. I felt robbed on this one. We came as close to leaving in the middle a movie as we have in a very long time.
